여호수아 11:1~15

4,5절은 메롬 물가에 진친 왕들의 군대가 바닷가의 모래처럼 많았다라고 합니다. 여호수아를 대적하여 일어난 연합군의 위세를 보여줍니다. 이 말씀은 여호수아 당시의 전쟁을 묘사한 것일 뿐 아니라 하나님의 백성을 대적하는 악의 세력의 연합을 상징하기도 합니다.

'바닷가의 모래'라는 표현은 20:8에도 등장합니다.(cf.계12:18) 어린양과 용의 오랜 적개심이 마침내 대규모 전쟁으로 발발하는 내용입니다. 이 전쟁을 위해 저들은 온 세상의 모든 군대를 다 동원합니다.(계16:4b,19:19) 그리고 성도의 진영과 하나님의 도성을 포위합니다. 그리고 하늘에서 불이 내려 이들을 불사릅니다. 포위하는 형상은 히스기야왕 시대의 앗수르군대의 포위와 하나님의 천사가 18만 5천을 하룻밤에 친 내용과 유사합니다.

사사기 5:20,21절 역시 기손강가에 하솔왕 야빈과의 두번째 전쟁을 하늘에서 벌어진 별들의 전쟁으로 묘사합니다. 지상에서 일어난 가나안 부족과 히브리민족의 전투가 하늘의 악한 영들과 하늘의 군대와의 싸움으로 동기화됩니다. 이 땅에서 하나님의 택한 백성을 공격하는 자들은 용의 군대로서 악의 세력들이라는 것입니다. 이런 전쟁에 대한 전형적인 표현이 사도행전에서 나타납니다. (행4:27) 예수님의 십자가 처형 때에도 빌라도와 헤롯의 연합전선이 그려집니다. (눅 23:12)

성경은 창 3:15절 이후 바닷가의 용의 세력과 하늘의 군대의 적개심과 전투를 지속적으로 묘사합니다.(계12:4~9) 이 전투의 마지막 대규모 접전이 계시록에서 아마겟돈 전쟁으로 표현됩니다.(계 16:16) 이 전쟁은 어린 양과 그의 백마탄 군사들의 승리로 끝이납니다.(계17:14)

여호수아는 이 전쟁을 승리로 이끌고 모세가 명한 모든 명령을 준행했다고 합니다. 사울의 불순종과 명백한 대비를 이룹니다. 이 말씀은 완전한 순종으로 아버지의 뜻을 이루신 예수님의 모습을 잘 보여줍니다.

오늘도 우리는 영적 전쟁의 소용돌이 한 복판에 서 있습니다. 어둠의 영들은 우리를 에워싸고 위협합니다. 바울은 우리가 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니한다고 합니다. 우리를 도우시는 어린 양의 보혈과 그의 천사들이 연약과 허물에 휩싸인 우리를 돕고 있기 때문입니다. 그러므로 깨어 기도하며 말씀에 철저히 순종하고 주의 뜻을 따르는 군사된 성도님들 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

“그들이 그 모든 군대를 거느리고 나왔으니 곧 백성이 많아 해변의 모래 같고 말과 병거도 심히 많았으며 이 모든 왕들이 모여 나와서 이스라엘과 싸우려고 메롬 물가에 함께 진을 쳤더라.”

요한계시록 20:8–9
“나가서 땅의 사방 백성 곧 곡과 마곡을 미혹하고 모아 싸움을 부치리니 그 수가 바다의 모래 같으리라. 저희가 지면에 올라 성도들의 진과 사랑하시는 성을 두르매 하늘에서 불이 내려와 저희를 소멸하고.”

열왕기하 19:35
“이 밤에 여호와의 사자가 나와서 아수르 진중에서 군사 십팔만 오천인을 친지라 아침에 일찍이 일어나 보니 다 송장이 되었더라.”

사사기 5:20–21
“별들이 하늘에서 싸우되 그 다니는 길에서 시스라와 싸웠도다. 기손 강은 그들을 휩쓸었으니 옛 강 곧 기손 강이라 내 영혼아 네가 힘 있는 자를 밟았도다.”

사도행전 4:27
“과연 헤롯과 본디오 빌라도는 이방인과 이스라엘 백성과 합세하여 하나님의 거룩한 종 예수, 곧 주께서 기름 부으신 자를 거슬러.”

누가복음 23:12
“헤롯과 빌라도가 전에는 원수였으나 당일에 서로 친구가 되니라.”

창세기 3:15
“내가 너로 여자와 원수가 되게 하고 네 후손도 여자의 후손과 원수가 되게 하리니 여자의 후손은 네 머리를 상하게 할 것이요 너는 그의 발꿈치를 상하게 할 것이니라.”

요한계시록 12:4–9
“…그 꼬리가 하늘의 별 삼분의 일을 끌어다가 땅에 던지더라. 용이 해산하려 하는 여자 앞에 서서 그가 해산하면 그 아이를 삼키고자 하더니… 큰 용이 내어쫓기니 옛 뱀 곧 마귀라고도 하고 사탄이라고도 하며 온 천하를 꾀는 자라…”

“세 영이 히브리 말로 아마겟돈이라 하는 곳으로 왕들을 모으더라.”

“그들이 어린 양으로 더불어 싸우려니와 어린 양은 만주의 주시요 만왕의 왕이시므로 저희를 이기실 터이요 또 그와 함께 있는 자들 곧 부르심을 입고 빼내심을 얻고 진실한 자들은 이기리로다.”

“여호와께서 그 종 모세에게 명하신 것을 모세가 여호수아에게 명하였고 여호수아는 그대로 행하여 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 것을 하나도 행하지 아니한 것이 없었더라.”

사무엘상 15:19
“어찌하여 왕이 여호와의 목소리를 청종하지 아니하고 탈취하기에만 마음을 두어 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하였나이까.”

고린도후서 4:8
“우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니하며 답답한 일을 당하여도 낙심하지 아니하며.”

Joshua 11:1~15

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

1. The Overwhelming Enemy
- Joshua 11:4–5: The kings gathered at the waters of Merom, “as numerous as the sand on the seashore.”
- This was not only a historical description of Joshua’s battle, but also a symbol of the vast alliance of evil forces that rise against God’s people.
- Revelation echoes this imagery, showing the dragon summoning the armies of the world to wage war against the Lamb (Rev. 12:18; 16:14, 19).

2. The Pattern of Encirclement
- Evil powers surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city (Rev. 20:8–9).
- Yet, just as in Hezekiah’s day when the angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrians overnight, God intervenes with fire from heaven.
- What looks like certain defeat becomes a testimony of divine deliverance.

3. The Cosmic Dimension of Warfare
- Judges 5:20–21: The battle against King Jabin is described as “the stars fighting from heaven.”
- Earthly conflicts mirror heavenly realities — the struggle of God’s people against human enemies reflects the greater war against spiritual forces of darkness.
- Acts 4:27 and Luke 23:12 show this same pattern: Pilate and Herod united against Christ, embodying the alliance of worldly powers against God’s Anointed.

4. The Ancient Hostility
- From Genesis 3:15 onward, Scripture portrays the enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
- Revelation culminates in the battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:16), where the Lamb and His army triumph (Rev. 17:14).
- Joshua’s obedience and victory foreshadow Christ’s perfect obedience, in contrast to Saul’s disobedience.

5. Our Present Struggle
- We too stand in the midst of spiritual warfare. Darkness surrounds us, but Paul reminds us: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed” (2 Cor. 4:8).
- The blood of the Lamb and the ministry of His angels strengthen us in our weakness.
- Victory comes not through human strength, but through prayer, obedience, and steadfast faith.

6. Call to Action
- Remain vigilant in prayer.
- Live in complete obedience to God’s Word.
- Stand firm as soldiers of Christ, confident that the battle belongs to the Lord.

> “And they came out with all their troops, a great host, in number like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.”

This was not only a historical description of Joshua’s battle, but also a symbol of the vast alliance of evil forces that rise against God’s people.

Revelation 20:8
> “…and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.”

> “And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them.”

This recalls the Assyrian army in Hezekiah’s day:

> “And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.”

3. The Cosmic Dimension of Warfare
Judges 5:20–21
> “From heaven the stars fought, from their courses they fought against Sisera. The torrent Kishon swept them away, the ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon. March on, my soul, with might!”

Earthly conflicts mirror heavenly realities.

Acts 4:27
> “For truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel.”

Luke 23:12
> “And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.”

4. The Ancient Hostility
Genesis 3:15
> “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Revelation 12:4–9 describes the dragon’s war against heaven and the saints.

Revelation 16:16
> “And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”

Revelation 17:14
> “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

Joshua’s obedience foreshadows Christ’s perfect obedience:

Joshua 11:15
> “Just as the LORD had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.”

In contrast:

1 Samuel 15:19
> “Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?”

5. Our Present Struggle
2 Corinthians 4:8
> “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair.”

The blood of the Lamb and the ministry of His angels strengthen us in our weakness. Victory comes not through human strength, but through prayer, obedience, and steadfast faith.
