   Pentatonix는 NBC방송국의 아카펠라 오디션 프로그램인 [The Sing-off] Season3에서

   그룹 Survier의 'Eye of the tiger'로 우승한 팀이죠....

  Pentatonix는 비트박스/퍼커션을 담당하는 케빈 올루졸라(Kevin Olusola), 고음 보컬의

  미치 그래시(Mitch Grassi), 중저음의 보컬 스캇 호잉(Scott Hoying), 베이스를 담당하고

  있는 아비 카플랜(Avi Kaplan), 팀 내에서 유일한 홍일점, 허스키한 보이스의 소유자

  커스티 멀도나도(Kirstie Maaldonado)로 구성된 5인조 아카펠라 그룹이다.

  악기의 영역을 넘어선 다섯 사람의 다채로운 화음, 인간의 목소리, 그리고 장르의 한계에

  도전하는 최고의 아카펠라 그룹이다.

  Pentatonix는 멤버가 다섯 명이라는 이유로 5음계(=펜타토닉 스케일)를 팀 이름으로

  설정했다.

  이들은 NBC에서 방영된 인기 아카펠라 오디션 프로그램 [The Sing-Off] 시즌 3(2011년)

  에서 우승하면서 본격적으로 그 이름을 알려나가게 된다.

  미국 캘리포니아를 거점으로 활약하고 있는 펜타토닉스는 텍사스 동네 친구들로 처음

  시작되었다.  

  팀의 싱어송라이터이자 메인 남성 보컬 파트를 담당하고 있는 Scott Hoying, 유일한 여성

  멤버 Kirstie Maldonado, 그리고 남성과 여성의 음역대를 오가는 신비로운 음성을 지닌

  Mitch Grassi는 텍사스 알링턴에 위치한 고등학교에서 함께 성장해갔다.

  맨 처음 이들은 대회를 위해 팀을 만들고 Lady GaGa의 'Telephone'을 편곡해 트리오

  버전으로 불렀는데 이것은 학교는 물론 다양한 곳에서 주목을 이끌어내는 계기가 된다.

  고등학교를 졸업한 이후에도 멤버들은 음악 분야의 학과로 대학에 진학하는데 스캇 호잉의

  경우 대학교 내의 아카펠라 그룹에 가입하기도 했다.

  세 명이 각자 활동해오던 와중 스캇 호잉은 [싱 오프]라는 오디션 프로그램에 대해 듣게

  되고 다시금 고교 시절 두 친구를 소집한다.

  프로그램 규정상 최소 4명이 필요했기 때문에 아카펠라 커뮤니티에서 베이스 파트로

  유명했던 Avi Kaplan을 합류시키며, 첼로를 연주하며 비트박스를 하는 동영상이

  유튜브에서 화제를 모았던 Kevin Olusola 마저 영입해내면서 [싱 오프] 시즌 3의

  오디션을 보게 된다.

  초절정의 기교, 그리고 어레인지를 통해 [싱 오프] 시즌 내내 사람들을 놀라게 만들었던

  펜타토닉스는 아카펠라에 비트박스를 도입하면서 장르를 초월한 소리 만들기에 집중해

  나갔고, 결국 [싱 오프] 시즌 3에서 우승하면서 십만 달러의 상금과 Sony와의 레코딩

  계약을 체결하게 되었다.
