  TERMS OF SERVICE  서비스 규정

Luke 6:27-37  

Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

용서하라 그리하면 너희가 용서를 받을 것이요                            —Luke 6:37  

만일 여러분이 나와 비슷하시다면,

온라인 서비스 이용약관에 동의하기에 앞서 계약서 전문을 다 읽는 일은 좀처럼 없을 것입니다.

분량도 여러 장일뿐더러,

그 속에 등장하는 법률용어들은 나 같은 보통 사람들에겐 도저히 이해할 수 없는 말들입니다.

If you’re like me,

you seldom read the full text of contracts for online services

before you agree to them.

They go on for pages,

and most of the legal jargon makes

no sense to ordinary people like me.

그래서 아프리카에 있는 친구가

아주 특이한 서비스 계약을 하는 온라인 소프트웨어가 있다는 것을 알려줬을 때

저는 적잖이 놀랐습니다.

소프트웨어의 개발업자는 이러이러하게 사용하면 안 된다는 장황한 라이센스 대신에,

그것을 잘 사용하라고 권하면서 간단한 축복의 말을 다음과 같이 하고 있습니다.

I was quite surprised, therefore,

when a friend from Africa made me aware of

this one-of-a-kind service agreement for online software.

Instead of a wordy license telling people how not to use it,

the developer offers a simple blessing urging people

to use it for good:

악을 피하고 선을 행하시기를 바랍니다.

자신을 용서하고 다른 사람도 용서하시기를 바랍니다.

그리고 준 것보다 더 취하지 말고 너그럽게 나누시기를 바랍니다.

May you do good and not evil.

May you fi-nd forgiveness

for yourself and forgive others.

May you share freely,
never taking more than you give.

처음에 나는 정말 대단하다는 생각이 들었습니다.

많은 서비스 계약조건들이 법적인 문서가 아닌 축복의 말로 쓰여 있는 것을 상상해보십시오.

그러고 나니 예수님이 우리와 맺은 계약도 그와 같은 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

예수님은 우리에게 죄의 용서와 하나님과의 화목, 그리고 성령의 임재하심을 제공해주십니다.

그 대가로 주님이 바라시는 것은 단지 우리가 선을 행하고(갈 6:10),

우리가 용서 받은 것과 같이 용서하며(눅 6:37),

주님이 우리를 사랑하신 것과 같이 다른 사람들을 사랑하라는 것(요 13:34)뿐입니다.

At first I thought, Wow.

Imagine if more terms of service agreements were

written as blessings instead of legal documents.

Then I thought,

The agreement Jesus makes with us is like that.

He offers us forgiveness of sin, peace with God,

and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

In return, all He asks is that we do good (Gal. 6:10),

forgive as we’ve been forgiven (Luke 6:37),

and love others as He loves us (John 13:34).

예수님이 우리와 맺은 계약이 대단한 것은

비록 우리가 계약 조건 대로 다 살지 못한다 하더라도 여전히 축복을 받는다는 것입니다

The beauty of Jesus’ agreement with us is

that even though we fail to live up to the terms,
