He demands our worship, our obedience, our prostration.

Do we suppose that they can do [Him] [any good],

or fear, like the chorus in Milton, that human irreverence can bring about “His glory’s diminution”?

He demands our worship, our obedience, our prostration.
하나님께서는 우리의 예배, 우리의 순종, 우리의 부복을 요구하신다

Do we suppose that they can do [Him] [any good],

우리는 그것들이 하나님께 무슨 유익이 되게 할 수 있다고 추측하는가?

or fear, like the chorus in Milton, that human irreverence can bring about “His glory’s diminution”?
아니면 공포라서, 밀톤에 나오는 후렴처럼, 인간의 불경이 하나님의 영광의 감소를 가져올  것인가?

한 인간은 그분을 경배하기를 거부함으로 하나님의 영광을 더 이상 감소시키지 못한다

만약 그리된다면 인간이 신이지 먹고 자고 똥 싸는 인간만은 아닌 게 증명되나 해가 있는 한 신은 존재한다

그러나 하나님께서는 우리의 유익을 위한 의지를 표명하시고 우리의 유익은 그분을 사랑하는 것이다

(피조물에게 합당한 그런 반응으로)

and to love Him we must know Him: 
그리고 그분을 사랑하기 위해서는 우리가 그분을 알아야 한다

(모르는 이를 사랑할 순 없지만 알고 나면 사랑하지 않을 수 없다)

and if we know Him, we shall in fact fall /on our faces.

그리고 만약 우리가 그분을 알면 우리는 사실상 우리의 얼굴/머리를 땅에 떨어뜨릴/부복할 것이다

만약 우리가 하지 않는다면, 그건 우리가 사랑하려고 시도하는 그것이 아직 하나님은 아님을 보여준다
—though it may be the nearest approximation to God //which [our thought and fantasy] can attain.

비록 그것이 우리의 생각과 상상이 획득할 수 있는 하나님께 가장 가까운 근시치일지라도 

* 인간이 이성과 감정과 상상력을 총 동원하여 하나님을 사랑한다 쳐도 경외심이 부재하면 하나님 사랑은 아니고

자기 취향에 맞게 주문제작하여 공경하는 우상 사랑에 진배없는 것은 하나님을 올바로 이해한 게 아닌 때문이다
