Bowing from the Waist
by D.J. Yoon
In the yard after the autumn harvest,
Well-ripened rice lay spread out,
And yellow soybeans sat in sacks
I picked up a single soybean
And rolled it in my palm
Round and firm
Mom said to Dad,
It’s all thanks to you.
Dad said to Mom,
It’s thanks to you more than me.
Grandma said to everyone,
You planted and tended them
But their ripening is thanks to the heavens.
I added a word, too.
The rice and the soybeans grew up so well.
Grandma said,
Let’s all look up at the sky and bow!
Everyone looked up at the sky and bowed
But I
To the rice, and to the soybeans
Separately
Separately
I gave a deep, respectful bow.
Simple Review 感想
This poem is a warm story about thankfulness, kindness, and respect for nature. The grandma says that the rice and soybeans ripened because of help from the sky. So, the family looks up and bows to the sky. However, the child bows deeply to the rice and the soybeans one by one. The child does not see them only as food. Instead, the child sees them as living things that grew well and now help people live. The repeated word ‘Separately’ shows the child’s true respect for each crop. The child’s action does not disagree with the adults. It simply shows another way to be thankful. Through this simple but meaningful action, the poem teaches us to notice and respect the many living things that support our lives. Its easy language and quiet ending make the poem gentle, touching, and memorable.
