There are three kinds of people in the world. 세상엔 세 종류의 사람이 있다

The first class is of those //who live simply for their own sake and pleasure,

regarding Man and Nature /as so much raw material to be cut up into whatever shape may serve them.

* 보어인 전치사구 of those //who live simply for their own sake and pleasure,

   of는 소속/일부를 의미하기에 of those는 그들에게 소속된 또는 그들 중의 일부로 해석할 수 있다

  전치사로 쓰인다는 말은 현분사처럼 능동 동작자를 수식하지 않고 전치사+명사=전치사구로 형역/부역 함

* 명사 후치수식인 형역 부정사구  to be cut up into whatever shape may serve them. 수동태 구조임

* 전목인 의문사절  whatever shape may serve them. (의문사 whatever는 명사 shape을 수식하는 형용사 역할도 겸함)

In the second class are those //who acknowledge [some other claim upon them]

– the will of God, the categorical imperative, or the good of society –

and honestly try to pursue their own interests /no further /than this claim will allow.

* acknowledge  : to recognize the rights, authority, or status of

They try to surrender the higher claim /as much as it demands, like men /paying a tax,

but hope, like other taxpayers, that [what is left over] will be enough for them to live on.

* as much as에서 처음 as는 부사, 둘째는 접속사 as

* 전목인 명사구 men /paying a tax, 명+형역 현분사구

* 종적 주어인 의문사절 [what is left over]

* 보어인 형용사구 enough for them to live on.

Their life is divided, like a soldier’s or a schoolboy’s life, into time ‘on parade’ and ‘off parade’,

‘in school’ and ‘out of school’.

These people have got rid of [the tiresome business /of adjusting the rival claims of Self and God]

/by the simple expedient /of rejecting the claims of Self altogether.

[The old egoists will] has been turned round, reconditioned, and made /into a new thing.

​[The will of Christ] no longer limits theirs; it is theirs.

​All their time, in belonging to Him, belongs also to them, for they are His.

* 완료시제+수동태 has+been+pp ; has been turned round (been은 be의 과분사형)

* 대명사로 쓰인 소유격 theirs 그들의 것, His 그분의 것 (명사 앞에 쓰이면 형역이 됨; their/His will)

해석

There are three kinds of people in the world. 
세상에는 세 종류의 사람들이 있다/존재한다

The first class is of those //who live simply for their own sake and pleasure,
첫째 계층은 단지 그들 자신의 이득과 즐거움을 위해 사는 그들에게 속한/관련된 것이다
regarding Man and Nature /as so much raw material to be cut up into whatever shape may serve them. 
인간과 자연을 자기들에게 봉사할/기여할 어떤 모양으로든지 쪼개질 대단한 원료재료 정도로 간주하면서

* 이들은 신을 부인하는 불신자라 지들이 만들지도 않은 자연만물을 지들 멋대로 정의해서 지들 유익의 재료로 쓴다

In the second class are those //who acknowledge [some other claim upon them]
둘째 계층은 그들에 대한 다른 어떤 주장을 인식/인정하는 그들이며
– the will of God, the categorical imperative, or the good of society – 
-- 그 주장이란 하나님의 뜻, 무조건적/절대적인 도덕 의무 또는 사회의 선/도덕 --
and honestly try to pursue their own interests /no further than this claim will allow. 
그리고 이런 주장이 허락하는 한도 안에서 그들 자신의 관심사를 추구하려고 정직하게 노력하는 그들이다

* 신을 안 부정하지만 고상한 인품과 철학사상과 윤리도덕을 신처럼 믿는 종교인들은 신념신앙대로 살려고 노력하나

자기가 취한 종교의 대상은 자아라는 상대적 주체가 정의한 절대자 상이라 참 신이 아닌 헛것이니 잡힐 건 사기기만에

일단 세뇌로 잡히면 자기믿음이 진짜라고 만든 건 상상우상이니 신실하게 믿어도 여전히 가짜라 귀신잡기니 헛수고다

그들은 세금을 내는 사람들처럼 그 드높은 주장이 요구하는 만큼 그것에게 승복하기를 노력하지만 
but hope, like other taxpayers, that [what is left over] will be enough for them to live on. 
다른 세납자들처럼 세금 내고 남은 그것이 그들이 살아가기에 충분할 것이라고 희망한다

* 루이스 시대는 일차대전 때라 엄청난 전쟁비용 때문에 정부가 엄청난 세금 징수로 영국민을 혹사했을 것이다

그들의 삶은, 군인이나 학생의 삶처럼, 행진하고 안 하는 시간, 학교 안이나 밖의 시간으로 분리된다

* 군인이면 명령에 따라 행진하라면 하고 아니면 안 하고 학생이면 교내/교외 생활로 삶의 시간이 구분되듯

종교인도 교리상 주일성수 하라면 하고 십일조 내라면 내는 신앙생활과 별개의 사생활로 분리되어 살기에

정치와 종교 분리를 주장하듯 종교와 현실을 분리하여 종교 따로 현실 따로 따로따로 충돌없이 별개로 논다

But the third class is of those //who can say /like St Paul [that for them ‘to live is Christ’]. 
그러나 셋째 계층은 성자 바울처럼 내가 사는 건 그리스도를 위함이다라고 말할 수 있는 그들에게 속한 것이다

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

New Living Translation
For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.

* 바울도 사람이 정의한 유대종교를 믿는 종교인이었다가 부활하신 예수님을 만난 후 율법과 교리의 종교를 격파하고

예수님의 마음과 성령을 공유하는 한 몸으로 신성에 참여하는 중생복음을 전하였는데 종교인에게는 신성모독적이라

유대와 이방의 독실한 종교인들이 극렬히 저항했듯 종교적 목사들도 혼연일체는 빼고 율법만 가르쳐 종교인만 키운다

These people have got rid of [the tiresome business /of adjusting the rival claims of Self and God

이런 사람들은 자기의 주장 모두를 거절/부인하는 단순한 편법에 의해서

자신과 하나님 사이의 대립되는 주장들을 조정해야 하는 피곤한 일을 제거해 버려 없다

* 두 주장이 대립되면 맞든 틀리든 한 주장이 취소되면 화해는 나오지만 취소된 주장이 맞다면 억울한 일이나

예수님은 전적으로 옳으시니 내가 맞다고 생각하는 주장을 꺾고 예수님의 주장을 내 것으로 취해야 진짜 맞다

그 예전의/낡은 이기주의자들의 뜻은 돌이켜지고 재 수리되고 새로운 것으로 만들어져 왔다

* 이기주의는 자기가 세상의 중심이라는 견해로 만사를 판단하니 생기는 패악인데 사실 지구가 중심이 아니고

태양이 중심이니 모든 지구인들은 태양을 중심으로 돌아야 살듯 빛이신 예수님이 중심이어야 피조물들이 산다

[The will of Christ] no longer limits theirs; it is theirs. 
그리스도의 뜻이 더 이상 그들의 뜻을 제한하지 않는다 ; 그리스도의 뜻은 그들의 뜻이다
​
All their time, in belonging to Him, belongs also to them, for they are His.
그들의 모든 시간은, 그분에게 속해 있지만, 역시 그들에게 속해 있는 건 그들이 그분의 것이기 때문이다
​

* 예수님께 속한 신자가 새 피조물/새 사람이고 모든 것이 예수님께 속했듯 그들 자신도 예수님께 속했기에

예수님의 뜻 안에 있는 그들의 뜻 역시도 예수님의 뜻임과 동시에 자기들의 뜻이기에 이인일체의 한 몸이다
