Screwtape advises Wormwood /on using time to wear down a soul:

* 전목인 동명사구 using time to wear down a soul:

* 부역 부정사구 to wear down a soul ; 준동사 using 수식

The Enemy has guarded him /from you /through the first great wave of temptations.

​But, if only he can be kept alive, you have time itself for your ally.

​[The long, dull, monotonous years of middle-aged prosperity or middle-aged adversity]

are excellent campaigning weather.

​You see, it is so hard [for these creatures to persevere].

* 불자 kept의 보어인 형용사 alive,

* 강조사로 쓰인 재귀 대명사 itself 

* 형역 과분사 middle-aged 뒷 명사 prosperity 수식

* 동명사 campaigning (weather가 campaigning을 하는 주체면 현분사나 아니기에 동명사임)

* campaign ; 1. a series of actions that are systematically arranged to achieve a specific goal. 단체 활동,

   2. a series of military operations intended to achieve a particular objective 군대 작전

   동사 campaign ; go on a campaign 단체활동을 가다/하다  go off to war 전쟁하러 가다

* weather ; a prevailing state or condition 우세한/지배적인 상태/상황, 조건

* 가주어 it = 진주어인 부정사 to persevere (전치사구 for these creatures는 부정사의 동작자 표시로 쓰임)

* creature는 인간과 구별되는 동물 뜻도 있지만 사람을 비하해서 짐승에 비유할 때도 쓰임

[The routine of adversity, the gradual decay of youthful loves and youthful hopes],

[the quiet despair (hardly felt as pain) of ever overcoming the chronic temptations

//with which we have again and again defeated them],

[the drabness //which we create in their lives

and the inarticulate resentment //with which we teach them to respond to it]

—[all this] provides admirable opportunities of wearing out a soul by attrition.

* 전목인 동명사구 ever overcoming [the chronic temptations with which~] 

* [all this] = [The routine...], [the quiet despair...], [the drabness... and the inarticulate resentment ...]

​* 형절/목적격 관대절/전목 //with which we have again and again defeated them],

   we have again and again defeated them with drabness(=which)

* 전목인 동명사구 wearing out a soul by attrition.

* 타동사구 wear out 낡아서 못 쓰게 되다, 닳다, 해지다, 또는 녹초가 되다, 탈진하게 만들다/되다
to make or become unfit or useless through hard or extended use, exposure to sunlight or hard water, etc..

If, on the other hand, the middle years prove prosperous, our position is even stronger.

​He feels that he is ‘finding his place in it’, while really it is finding its place in him.

His increasing reputation, his widening circle of acquaintances, his sense of importance,

the growing pressure of absorbing and agreeable work,

build up/ in him [a sense of being really at home in earth], which is just [what we want].

​You will notice that the young are generally less unwilling /to die /than the middle- aged and the old.

* 형역 현분사  increasing의 주체는 reputation임 즉 증가하는/나아지는 평판 

* 전목인 명사구 absorbing and agreeable work, 형/현분사&형+명

* 타동사구 build up ; 건물로 둘러싸다, 쌓아 올리다, 확립하다, 증진시키다, 단련하다

* 삽입절/형절 which is just [what we want] 설명추가 역할

해석

삼촌 마귀가 한 영혼을 탈진하게 만들기 위해 시간이라는 걸 사용하는 것에 대해 사촌 마귀에게 충고한다

The Enemy has guarded him /from you /through the first great wave of temptations.

그 원수는 (마귀의 원수인 하나님) 첫 번째의 엄청난 유혹의 파도를 통과하는데서 너로부터 그를 보호해 주었다

* 하나님께서 마귀의 큰 시험으로부터 보호해 주시지 않으시면 인간은 마귀의 하수가 되어 마귀처럼 살 것이다 

But, if only he can be kept alive, you have time itself for your ally.

​그러나 만약 그가 산 상태로 유지될 수 있다면/살 수 있다면 너는 시간 자체를 네 협력자로 가진다

* 바쁘게 사는 사람에게 시간은 너무 짧지만 한가한 사람에게 남은 시간은 지루하기에 시간 소비로 별 짓을 다 하므로

많은 여유 시간은 죄인에게 죄를 더 할 수 있기에 할 일이 적은 부자/한량들이나 노인들에게 죄질 시간이 더 많이 있다

그 길고 따분하고 단조로운 중년의 번영과 중년의 고된 ​세월들은 매우 훌륭한 작전 날씨/환경이다 

* campaign은 단체로 선거, 판매, 환경 등 다양한 사회 활동이나 군대 작전에도 쓰이며 날씨는 중요한 한 조건이니

활동하기 좋은 날을 선택해야는데 마귀가 준동하기 좋은 상황이 돈과 여유와 따분한 삶을 사는 불혹의 중년층이다

네가 알다시피 이런 피조물/인간들이 끈기 있게 계속하기란 매우 어렵다

* 보통 사람은 신념이 강철 같지 못해 여차하면 단념하고 믿음/의지/감정 변화도 죽 끓듯 해서 마귀 유혹에 잘 넘어간다

고된 일상, 젊은이의 사랑과 희망의 점차적인 쇠퇴,

* 젊었을 때의 삶에 대한 열정이 식어 사라지면 무슨 일이나 놀이를 해도 재미가 없으니 삶이 따분하다

고질적인 유혹을 끝없이 극복하는데서의 소리 없는 좌절감

그걸로 우리가 그들을 연속하여 패배시키는

* 육체의 죄성은 죽지 않았고 마귀도 여전히 존재하기에 금지과를 먹으라는 유혹은 끊임없기에 넘어지고 자빠져 피나고

아프다가 익숙해져서 양심이 화인 맞아 둔해지면 죄를 짓고도 죄책감이 덜하므로 반복하다가 결국 마귀 좀비로 잡힌다

[the drabness //which we create in their lives

우리가 그들의 삶 속에 창출하는 단조로움과 

and the inarticulate resentment //with which we teach them to respond to it

우리가 그것에 반응하도록 그들에게 가르치는 분명치 않은 증오 등

* 증오하는 이유는 대부분 자기 뜻/기분에 거슬리니 생기는데 사실 자기 말/기분대로 되라는 보장이 없으니 근거도 없다

​이런 모든 것들이 마찰마모 소모소진에 의해서 한 영혼을 탈진시키는 것에 대한 감탄할만한 기회들을 공급한다

* 끊임없이 계속지속되는 낙수물이 바위를 뚫듯 반복되는 단조로운 일들이 몸과 마음을 나태하고 지치게 만드는데

반복되는 일이 완전/성숙 추구보다는 의미상실로 가고 소리에 불과한 잔소리나 비방을 사랑 아닌 증오로 받아치니

증오는 자타의 마음과 감정을 지옥불로 태워 얼마간 축적된 업적공적을 소멸괴멸하고 재만 남겨 애곡애통 나온다 

If, on the other hand, the middle years prove prosperous, our position is even stronger.

만약, 그 반면에, 중년의 나이가 번영하는 상태로 입증되면/번영하게 되면, 우리의 입장은 더 강력해지기조차 한다

번영은 사람을 세상에게 뜨개질하듯 얽어맨다

* 번영번창하려면 재주도 재주지만 온갖 연구와 노력을 경주하고 정치경제 사회종교적 대인관계도 넓히고 굳혀야 하니

이산저산 드렁칙이 얽히고살키듯 이자저자 이곳저곳 이래저래 짜집기되어 산사태의 나무처럼 휩쓸려 가다가 끝장이라

사는데 물질 축복이 필요하긴 하지만 물질 자체가 삶의 목적이 되면 곧 악의 뿌리요 우상이 되어 축복이 저주로 바뀐다

He feels that he is ‘finding his place in it’, while really it is finding its place in him.

그가 세상에서 그의 거처를 발견 중임을 느끼는 것과 반대로 세상이 그 사람 안에서 그것의 거처를 발견 중이다

His increasing reputation, his widening circle of acquaintances, his sense of importance,

그의 증가하는 평판과 그의 넓혀지는 교제의 영역과 그의 중요성에 대한 감각/느낌과

the growing pressure of absorbing and agreeable work,

흡수/열중적이고 동조되는/마음에 드는 직업의 점점 커지는 압력 등은 

build up/ in him [a sense of being really at home in earth],

이 땅에서 진짜로 땅/세상이 집/낙원인 것 같은 편안한 느낌을 그 사람 안에 조성축성되게 하는데

which is just [what we want].

그건 우리가 원하는 딱 그것이다

* SNS에서 좋아요 평판과 구독제자가 증가하면 할수록 자기 인지도 가치도 상승하니 자신과 구독자 관리에 몰두하고

좋은 직장 가면 일에 빠져 분주하고 증가된 급여가 강요하는 노력봉사로 심신을 바치고 집에 오면 가사일이 몰려드니

몸과 마음이 쉴 틈도 없고 삶을 투영해 볼 수도 없으니 그리 사는 게 사는 거라고 간주/안주하니 저생은 안중에도 없다

​너는 중년들과 노인들보다 젊은 이들이 일반적으로 죽기를 덜 꺼려하는 것을 인식할 것이다

즉 젊은 이는 용감하여 죽기를 겁내지 않지만 살만큼 산 중년이나 노인들이 청년보다 죽기를 더 꺼려한다는 것이다

* 오래 살면 살 수록 몸과 마음이 낡아져서 살기가 더 힘드니 오래 살기를 싫어해야 정상인데 그래도 더 살자 하면

전 인생을 투자해도 못 깨달은 것이 인생이다 보이나 더 산다 해도 진리인 성경을 안 믿는다면 깨달을 진리는 없다
