The Ramen King
by D. J. Yoon
I
Sejong, Jeongjo
I like Yeongjo.
Eating coarse rice
Wearing thin clothes
Come to think of it,
I’m a king already.
One outfit
Ramen
Is there no one
to call me Your Majesty?
Never mind everyone else
Doesn’t my wife want to be queen?
II
Sejong, Jeongjo
I’ve always liked Yeongjo.
Coarse rice to eat
Thin clothes in the cold
Come to think of it
I’m a king of old.
One outfit to wear
Ramen for my fare
Yet no one calls me Your Majesty
Does no one know I’m there?
Never mind the rest
Won’t my wife be queen?

Simple Review 感想
The Ramen King is a warm and funny poem about finding joy in a simple life. The speaker likes King Yeongjo, who ate plain food and wore thin clothes. Looking at his own life, the speaker jokes that he, too, is already a king. He wonders why no one calls him Your Majesty, then asks whether his wife would like to be his queen. The ending makes us smile and shows that he wants to share the fun with her.
