The rule for all of us is perfectly simple.

Do not waste time /bothering /whether you ‘love’ your neighbour;

act as if you did.

As soon as we do this, we find one of the great secrets.

   주어가 시간을 소비하면서 동시에 신경을 씀

* 영 neighbou, 미 neighbor

* 가정법으로 쓰인 as if (가정이라는 의미로 동사를 did 과거형으로 쓰니 과거에 한 것이 아니고 '하는 것처럼'이 됨)

* 대동사 did = loved

* 부사절 접속사인 as soon as ;  '~하자마자'

* 지시 대명사로 쓰인 this ; 앞서 언급된 내용을 대신함

When you are behaving /as if you loved someone, you will presently come /to love him.

​If you injure [someone () you dislike], you will find [yourself] [disliking him more].

​If you do [him] [a good turn], you will find [yourself] [disliking him less].

* Presently'는 주로 '현재, 지금'이라는 의미와 '곧, 머지않아'라는 두 가지 주요 의미를 가진 부사

* 숙어 come to ; reach or be brought to a specified situation or result. '~라는 결과에 이르다'

There is, indeed, one exception.

If you do him a good turn, not to please God and obey the law of charity,

but to show him what a fine forgiving chap you are, and to put him in your debt,

and then sit down /to wait for his ‘gratitude’,

you will probably be disappointed.

(People are not fools: they have a very quick eye for anything like showing off, or patronage.)

우리는 조금 더 그 존재를 사랑하고, 아니면, 적어도, 더 적게 싫어하기를 배웠어야 한다

* 인간 존재는 하나님께서  창조하신 최고의 걸작품이기에 유명 화가를 존중하므로 그의 작품을 소중하게 여기듯

하나님의 작품인 피조물도 소중히 여기면 하나님을 소중하게 여기는 건데 싫어한다면 하나님을 싫어하는 것이라

하나님께서 하나님은 물론이고 이웃을 그것도 자기 자신의 몸처럼 사랑하라고 하신 명령에 불복하는 오만이 된다
