임성근 전 해병대 1사단장에 대한 ‘구명 로비’ 의혹과 관련해 해병 특검의 수사를 받고 있는 김장환(91) 극동방송 이사장과 이영훈(71) 여의도순복음교회 담임목사가 법률 대리인으로 각각 김회재·강찬우 변호사를 선임했다. 김·강 변호사는 검사장 출신으로, 이재명 대통령 등 현 여권 인사들과 직간접적 친분이 있다.

Kim Jang-hwan (91), chairman of Far East Broadcasting Corporation, and Lee Young-hoon (71), senior pastor of Yeouido Full Gospel Church, appointed lawyers Kim Hoe-jae and Kang Chan-woo as legal representatives, respectively, in connection with allegations of "life lobbying" for former Marine Corps 1st Division commander Lim Sung-keun. Attorney Kim and Kang are former prosecutors and have direct and indirect relationships with current ruling party figures, including President Lee Jae-myung.

개신교계 원로인 김장환·이영훈 목사는 2023년 7~8월 고(故) 채수근 상병 사망 사고 이후 임 전 사단장이 과실치사 혐의자에 포함됐다가 제외되는 과정에서 구명 로비를 벌였다는 의혹과 관련해 지난 18일 해병 특검의 압수 수색을 당했다. 해병 특검은 참고인 신분인 김·이 목사의 자택과 교회 등 10여 곳을 압수 수색했다. 김·이 목사는 압수 수색 후 법률 대리인을 선임한 것으로 알려졌다.

Pastor Kim Jang-hwan and Pastor Lee Young-hoon, who are Protestant elders, were seized and searched by the Marine Special Prosecutor's Office on the 18th in connection with allegations that Lim lobbied for life in the process of being included and excluded from the alleged manslaughter after the death of the late corporal Chae Soo-geun from July to August 2023. The Marine Special Prosecutor seized and searched more than 10 places, including the homes and churches of Pastor Kim and Lee, who are reference persons. Pastor Kim and Lee reportedly appointed legal representatives after the seizure and search.

김 목사의 법률 대리를 맡은 김회재 변호사는 의정부지검장을, 이 목사 법률 대리인인 강찬우 변호사는 수원지검장을 지냈다. 두 변호사는 현 여권 인사들과 친분이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 김 변호사는 21대 국회 때 더불어민주당 의원을 지냈고, 작년 22대 총선 땐 민주당 내 경선에 출마했다가 낙선했다. 강 변호사는 이 대통령과 사법연수원 동기(18기)로 이 대통령이 경기지사이던 2018년 공직선거법 위반 사건의 검찰 수사 단계 때 변호를 맡았다.

Kim Hoi-jae, who served as Kim's legal representative, served as the head of the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office, while Kang Chan-woo, Lee's legal representative, served as the head of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office. The two lawyers are known to be close with current figures in the ruling party. Kim served as a lawmaker of the Democratic Party during the 21st National Assembly, and ran in the Democratic Party's primary race in the 22nd general election last year before being defeated. Kang, who is the same age as President Lee (aged 18) at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, served as a lawyer during the prosecution's investigation into the case of violation of the Public Official Election Act in 2018 when Lee was governor of Gyeonggi Province.

김 변호사는 법무법인 LKB의 대표 변호사로, 강 변호사는 법무법인 평산의 대표 변호사로 각각 일해왔다. 그런데 LKB와 평산은 지난달 합병했다. 김 변호사는 개신교, 강 변호사는 천주교 신자라고 한다. 강 변호사는 지난 20일 해병 특검의 압수 수색과 관련해 “변호인 조력을 받을 권리를 박탈당했고, 권리 보호에 대한 아무런 정보도 제공받지 못했다”고 주장했다. 이에 해병 특검은 “절차적으로 위법하다고 볼 부분은 없었다”고 반박했다. 법조계 한 인사는 “명예를 중시하는 종교계 원로들이 참고인 신분인데도 압수 수색까지 당하자, 법률 대리인을 선임해 적극적으로 방어권을 행사하겠다는 것으로 보인다”고 했다.

Lawyer Kim has worked as the representative lawyer of LKB, and lawyer Kang as the representative lawyer of Pyeongsan, the law firm. However, LKB and Pyeongsan merged last month. Lawyer Kim is said to be Protestant, and lawyer Kang is a Catholic. Regarding the seizure and search of the Marine special prosecutor on the 20th, lawyer Kang claimed, "We have been deprived of our right to seek assistance from lawyers and have not been provided with any information on the protection of our rights." In response, the Marine special prosecutor countered, "There was nothing that could be considered procedurally illegal." A legal official said, "As senior religious leaders who value honor were confiscated and searched even though they were witnesses, it seems that they would appoint legal representatives to actively exercise their defense rights."
