New Year’s message from 2009 JCI President Jun Sup Shin
Dear JCI members,
I must begin by thanking 2008 JCI President Graham Hanlon for his significant contributions to JCI, and by paying tribute to the founders of JCI and to all members whose time and efforts throughout the years have made it possible for us to enjoy the opportunities we now have as JCI members.
Allow me also to congratulate all members worldwide who have been elected to hold office at the local, national and international levels, and all other members committed to make sure 2009 is the best year ever for our beloved organization.
Challenges abound everywhere. As JCI members and active citizens, we will help our organization and our communities face those challenges, surmount obstacles, take advantage of opportunities, and thus contribute to move the world towards peace, development and prosperity.
We will achieve Global Impact through Local Action, our motto for 2009, addressing climate change in particular. By taking actions locally as active citizens, we can achieve worldwide impact.
Focusing on our new Vision, “to be the leading global network of young active citizens,” we will carry out our Mission -- “to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.” And we will seek to offer those opportunities to an increasing number of young people in 2009.
The values we share as JCI members – faith in God, the brotherhood of man, individual freedom and dignity, government of laws, the value of human personality, and service to humanity – will inspire us to carry out our mission, and to develop ourselves, our organization and our communities.
We are at a crucial historic juncture. We have much to do, much to accomplish and much to look forward to in 2009. In addition to increasing our membership and sponsorships, we will further improve communications and marketing, and develop training.
In addition to projects addressing climate change, innumerable exceptional programs – including The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) Program, the JCI Best Business Plan (BBP) Competition, the JCI World Public Speaking Championship, and the JCI World Debating Championship – will be implemented in 2009.
We will enjoy countless magnificent events, among them our four JCI Area Conferences in May and June; the JCI Leadership Summit at the U.N. in Geneva, Switzerland, in July; and the JCI World Congress in Hammamet, Tunisia, in November.
A great year of changes, challenges and opportunities awaits us. Let us give it our best. Encouraged by past successes, let us dare to dream accomplishing much more than what has been accomplished so far, let us aspire to greatness for ourselves, for our organization, for our communities, and for our world. Let us aim at achieving exceptional Global Impact through exceptional Local Action in 2009, particularly regarding climate change.
Jun Sup Shin
2009 JCI President
