에스더6:1

김민기의 노래 '봉우리'에서 사람들은 높은 봉우리에 오르려 하지만 봉우리는 고갯마루에 불과하고 실은 낮은 바다의 물이 모여듭니다. 누구든지 자기를 높이는 자는 낮아지고 자기를 낮추는 자는 높아진다(마23:12)는 말씀의 조명은 하만과 모르드개의 관계를 비추고 있습니다.  드라마든, 문학이든 반전이 없으면 무미건조합니다. 에스더 왕후의 첫 번째 잔치가 끝난 밤이자, 두 번째 잔치가 시작되기 전날 밤, 무슨 이유에서인지 왕은 잠을 청하지 못합니다.

왕은 잠이 달아나자, 시중드는 신하들로 역대 실록을 가져오게 합니다. 승정원 도승지 정도 되는 이가 실록을 읽었고 듣고 있던 왕의 귀에 내시의 왕 암살모의를 고발한 내용이 들려왔습니다. 왕은 신하들에게 모르드개에게 존귀나 영예를 내렸는지 하문했고 신하들은 아무것도 내리지 않았다고 답했습니다. 아니 ,왜, 갑자기, 하필 지금 하문하시나? 누가 아니래? 아왕은 목숨이 경각에 달린 일 일진데 왜 당시에 즉각 처리하지 않았을까?그리고 자원 이는 뭘 하고 있었고? 이 상황은 창세기의 요셉을 떠오르게 합니다.

요셉은 옥에 갇힌 바로의 술 관원이 꾼 꿈을 관직 회복이라 해석했고 그때 풀려나가거든 자신의 사정을 왕에게 고해 구해달라는 요청도 했는데 관원은 새까맣게 잊어버렸습니다. 2년 후 왕의 꿈 해석이 필요할 때가 돼서야 관원은 요셉의 일을 기억했고, 그 결과 요셉은 옥에서 풀려나 총리가 되었었지요(창41:9-43). 모르드개의 경우도 왕의 목숨을 구한 공이 완전히 잊어진 듯 했지만 절묘한 시간에 왕에게 기억된 것입니다.

Joseph interpreted the dream of Baro's drinking officer in prison as "restoration of office," and when he was released, he asked the king to explain his situation, but the officer completely forgot. 왜 하필 그 때 잠이 안 오고, 술도 아니고, 여자도 아니고, 역대 실록을 읽느냐고? 신앙이 좋은 분들은 이것이 하나님의 섭리이고, 역사라고 말할 테지만 저는 믿음이 없어서 잘 모르겠습니다. 하여간 음모와 술수와 착각이 뒤범벅이 되어 불의가 늘 승리하는 듯 보이는 세상이 사실은 제 뜻대로 돌아가는 것이 아니라 그 뒤에는 세상의 힘과 모사가 작동하지 않는 보이지 않는 손길이 있은 줄을 믿어야 할 것입니다. 그 밤을 계기로 극적으로 두 사람의 운명이 바뀌었습니다.

바람은 세찬 입김을 아무리 강하게 불어도 나그네는 점점 외투를 여미기만 하였으나 해님은 부드럽고 따스한 미소를 보내자 나그네는 외투를 벗어 들었어요. 유연한 물 한 방울이 커다란 바위에 구멍을 낼 수도 있게 됩니다. 따스하고 부드러운 미소와 손길에는 정말 기적 같은 힘이 존재합니다. 큰 목소리로 거칠게 내 뱉는 언어는 누구에게든 상처만 될 뿐입니다. 사람들에게도 부드러운 눈높이로 다가서서 따스한 미소를 지어주면 분명 좋은 반응을 할 것입니다.

강하기보다 부드러워야 하고, 거칠고 큰 목소리보다 낮은 목소리가 영향력이 있게 되고, 낮아지면 높이신다는 것을 알고 행동하는 것은 중요할 것입니다. 하나님 어디 계시나요? 끝도 없는 하만의 욕망, 역전의 역사를 주신 하나님 우연을 가장한 개입, 보이는 보상이 없다면 오늘의 삶을 선택하는 동기는 무엇인가? 우연을 통해 일하시는 하나님이 보이는가?

It will be important to act knowing that it should be softer than strong, that a voice lower than a rough, loud voice becomes influential, and that it is elevated when it is lowered. Where is God? What is the motive for choosing life today without endless Harman's desire, intervention under the guise of coincidence, and visible rewards? Do you see God working through coincidence?

우연 속에서도 역사하시는 하나님, 세상은 하나님의 섭리를 믿지 않기에 자기 지혜와 권모술수, 권력과 돈, 힘과 건강, 목청 큰 악다구니를 의지 하나이다. 그러나 이것들은 한 순간에 무너질 수 있습니다. 제가 평강을 잃지 않고 양보와 희생을 선택하는 바보가 되게 하옵소서.
