Receive a Sword!

Genesis 21:10-12, Matthew 10:34-39, Romans 6:9-11

여러분 예수님을 믿습니까? 여러분은 예수님을 통해 무엇을 얻기 원하십니까? 여러분이 주님을 통해 무엇을 얻기 원하신다면 먼저 주님이 무엇을 주실 것인지를 물어야 할 것입니다. 주님은 여러분에게 무엇을 주려 하실까요? 이 것이 오늘의 질문입니다. 오늘 이 질문에 대한 답을 찾아보려고 합니다. 예수님은 오늘 본문에서 그 대답을 분명하게 하십니다. "너희는 내가 세상에 평화를 주려고 온 줄로 생각하지 말아라. 평화가 아니라 칼을 주려고 왔다.”(마 10:34)  주님은 우리에게 평화가 아니라 칼을 주시기 원하십니다. 그래서 오늘 설교 제목은 “칼을 받으시오”입니다.

여러분은 예수님의 이 말씀에 대하여 어떻게 생각하십니까? 여러분은 이 칼을 받을 수 있습니까? 평화가 아니라 칼을 받으라 하시니 참으로 결정하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 혼란스럽습니다. 기독교 신앙은 우리의 욕망을 따라 바라는 것이 아니라 하나님의 약속을 바라는 것입니다. 따라서 우리는 예수님께서 약속하신 이 말씀을 따라 평화가 아니라 칼을 받아야만 합니다. 비록 우리가 그것을 원하지 않는다 할지라도 순종해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 예수님을 따라가는 사람들이기 때문입니다. 그리고 우리는 예수님을 믿습니다. 그리고 우리는 그 분에게 복종해야 합니다. 이 것이 기독교 신앙입니다.   

l  왜 평화가 아니고 칼인가?

우리는 예수님의 말씀에 놀라지 않을 수 없습니다. 그래서 의문이 생깁니다. 왜 예수님께서 평화가 아니고 칼이라고 말씀하셨는가? 예수님께서 칼이 아니라 평화라고 말씀하셔야 옳지 않는가? 칼은 무기입니다. 그렇다면 예수님은 우리가 어떤 싸움을 하라고 하시는 건가요? 그 이유를 알기 위해 예수님께서 우리에게 칼을 주시겠다는 그 말씀의 배경을 알 필요가 있습니다. 

예수님은 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. "그러므로 너희는 그들을 두려워하지 말아라. 덮어 둔 것이라고 해도 벗겨지지 않을 것이 없고, 숨긴 것이라 해도 알려지지 않을 것이 없다. 내가 너희에게 어두운 데서 말하는 것을, 너희는 밝은 데서 말하여라. 너희가 귓속말로 듣는 것을, 지붕 위에서 외쳐라.  그리고 몸은 죽일지라도 영혼은 죽이지 못하는 이를 두려워하지 말고, 영혼도 몸도 둘 다 지옥에 던져서 멸망시킬 수 있는 분을 두려워하여라.”(Matthew 10:26-28)

우리는 예수님의 말씀을 주목해볼 필요가 있습니다. “그들을 두려워 말라” “몸은 죽일지라도 영혼은 죽이지 못하는 이를 두려워하지 말고, 영혼도 몸도 둘 다 지옥에 던져서 멸망시킬 수 있는 분을 두려워하여라.”

예수님은 우리가 악한 영과 싸워 이길 수 있도록 용기를 주시려고 하십니다. 예수님은 여러분이 악한 영과 싸울 수 있도록 부르셨습니다. 그래서 주님은 우리에게 칼을 주시려 합니다. 그것은 성령의 능력입니다. 바울은 에베소서에서 성령의 검에 대하여 말하였습니다. “구원의 투구를 받고 성령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀을 받으십시오.” 우리는 평화에 대해서도 이해할 필요가 있습니다. 평화는 예수님의 평화가 아니라 세상의 평화를 뜻합니다. 주님은 우리에게 세상의 평화가 아니라 주님의 평화를 주시기 원하십니다.

군대는 적과의 전투를 위해 만들어졌습니다. 부름받아 구원받은 하나님의 백성들은 악한 영과 싸움을 해야 합니다. 따라서 교회도 역시 하나님의 군대입니다. 물론 여러분이 교회입니다. 여러분은 389장 찬송을 아십니다. “믿는 사람들은 군병같으니 앞에 가신 주를 따라갑시다. 우리 대장 예수 기를 가지고 접전하는 곳에 가신 것 보라 믿는 사람들은 군병같으니 앞에 가신 주를 따라갑시다.”

사도 바울은 에베소서에서 우리의 믿음을 악한 영과 싸우는 영적인 전투로 설명합니다. “여러분은 주님 안에서 그분의 힘찬 능력으로 굳세게 되십시오. 악마의 간계에 맞설 수 있도록, 하나님이 주시는 온몸을 덮는 갑옷을 입으십시오. 우리의 싸움은 인간을 적대자로 상대하는 것이 아니라, 통치자들과 권세자들과 이 어두운 세계의 지배자들과 하늘에 있는 악한 영들을 상대로 하는 것입니다.”

영적 전쟁은 기독교인의 믿음에서 본성 중에 하나입니다. 우리가 믿음의 순수성을 지키려 한다면 이 영적 전쟁을 피할 수 없습니다. 따라서 우리가 예수님을 믿을 영적 전쟁에 필요한 무기인 칼을 받습니다. 이 사실을 기억하셔야 합니다. 우리 모두 그리스도의 군병입니다. 우리는 승리할 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님께서 우리에게 주신 검이 있기 때문입니다. 여러분이 이 것을 사용하면 악한 영을 제압할 수 있습니다. 우리 모두는 하나님의 군대입니다.

l  누구와 싸울 것인가?

적은 교회의 사역을 방해하고 목회적 사목을 훼방하는 것입니다. 악한 영은 기독교 역사 속에 계속 있어왔습니다. 그래서 예수님은 오늘 본문을 통해 우리에게 “그들을 두려워 말라” “몸은 죽일지라도 영혼은 죽이지 못하는 이를 두려워하지 말고, 영혼도 몸도 둘 다 지옥에 던져서 멸망시킬 수 있는 분을 두려워하여라.” 이 말씀은 우리가 악한 영을 따라가지 말고 오직 하나님을 뜻을 따르라는 말씀입니다.

하나님은 우리가 잘못된 것을 따르지 않고 의로운 길을 따르기 원하십니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 의로우시기 때문입니다.  오늘 창세기 본문에서 아브라함의 경우를 보면 아브라함은 자기 부인에게서 아이가 없자 부인의 몸종을 통해 아이를 얻습니다. 하나님은 그것을 인정하지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 당신의 약속대로 사라에게 낳은 이삭을 통해 아브라함의 대를 잇게 합니다. 하나님은 당신의 뜻을 따라 이루십니다. 우리의 뜻이 아닙니다. 그러므로 우리는 잘못된 믿음의 유혹과 싸워야 합니다. 

우리는 언제나 우리의 삶 속에서 갈등을 만나게 됩니다. 그렇지만 우리의 적은 사람이 아니라 악한 영입니다. 그래서 바울은 에베소서에서 이렇게 말합니다. “우리의 싸움은 인간을 적대자로 상대하는 것이 아니라, 통치자들과 권세자들과 이 어두운 세계의 지배자들과 하늘에 있는 악한 영들을 상대로 하는 것입니다.” 그러나 악한 영은 인간 안에 인간 관계에서 살고 행동합니다. 따라서 우리의 싸움은 인간관계 속에서 벌어집니다. 그래서 예수님은 말씀하셨습니다. “나는, 사람이 자기 아버지와 맞서게 하고, 딸이 자기 어머니와 맞서게 하고, 며느리가 자기 시어머니와 맞서게 하려고 왔다.” 사람의 원수가 자기 집안 식구일 것이다.

우리의 문제는 언제나 내부에 있습니다. 교회의 적도 세상보다 오히려 교회 안에 있습니다. 우리가 내부의 적을 볼 수 없으면 영적 전쟁을 할 수 없습니다. 첫째 우리는 우리 안에 있는 적을 볼 수 있어야 합니다. 둘째, 우리는 교회 안에 들어오는 사탄과 싸워야 합니다. 사탄은 언제나 친밀한 관계를 통해 교회를 공경합니다. 따라서 우리는 우리의 진정한 관계성은 그리스도 안에 있어야 합니다.

여러분은 예수님이 여러분에게 주시는 그 칼을 받으시겠습니까? 그렇다면 기도해야 합니다. 여러분이 그 칼을 받는다면 악한 영과 싸우는데 쓰십시오. 그러면 여러분은 승리할 것입니다. 그러면 하나님의 기쁨이 됩니다.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ? What do you want to get through Jesus Christ? If you want to receive something from the Lord, you should ask what he gives you. What does the Lord give us? This is today's question. I would like to talk to you about the answer of this question this morning. Jesus clearly answered us in today's scripture reading from Matthew, "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." The Lord wants to give us a sword, not peace on the earth. So today’s sermon is titled “Receive a Sword.” 

    How do you think about Jesus’ word? Can you receive the sword? It is very hard to decide it because it is a sword not peace. It is confused. Christian faith is not to wish according to our desire, but it is to hope God’s promise. Therefore, we should hope a sword not peace because Jesus promised us it. Though we don't want it, we must hope it because we are Christian to follow behind Jesus Christ, and we believe in Him, and we have to obey him. This is Christian faith.   

l  Why is it not peace, but a sword?

We cannot but surprise to hear Jesus' word, so we have a question Why is it not peace, but a sword? Does not Jesus want that give us peace not a sword? Is this right? A sword is a weapon, then, does Jesus wants that we fight against someone?  To understand the reason, we first need to know the background that Jesus wants to give us a sword.

Jesus said his disciples, "So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.(Matthew 10:26-28)

We need to pay attention to the words, "do not be afraid of them,"  "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

Jesus want to give us encourage so that we can fight against an evil spirit. Jesus calls you so that you may fight against an evil spirit. So he wants to give you a sword which is the power of the Spirit. Paul said a sword in Ephesians 6:17; “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit.” We need to understand about the peace also. The peace means the worldly peace not Jesus’ peace. He wants you to give his peace not the worldly peace.    

The army was organized to fight against an enemy. God's people who are called and saved are God's army to fights against an evil spirit. Therefore, our church is God's army also. Of course, you are church.  Do you remember Hymn song "Onward, Christian Soldiers"?(389)

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.

Apostle Paul explains us our faith as a spiritual war to fights an evil spirit in his letter to Ephesians, he said, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil "(6:10-12)

A spiritual war is one of the natures of Christian faith. If we want to keep the purity of our faith, we cannot avoid the spiritual war. Therefore when we believe in Jesus Christ, we are received the sword that we will use in the spiritual war. Remember this fact. All of us are Christian soldiers. We can get victory because we have the sword that Jesus gave us. If you use it through your faith, you must defeat an evil spirit. All of us are God's army.

2. Whom do we fight against?

It means to interrupt the pastoral ministry and the mission of church. An evil power has been in history of Christianity, so Jesus said us in today’s scripture reading from Matthew, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." This means that we should follow God’s will not the evil.

God doesn't want us to adopt a wrong, but a right way because God is righteous. Remember Abraham' case in today's scripture reading from Genesis. Though Abraham got a son through a servant woman not his wife, God didn't approve it. God approved Isaac as his successor because Isaac was God's promise. God must do his will not our will. Therefore, we have to fight against temptation of wrong faith.  

We always face a struggle in our life, but our enemy is an evil spirit not a human being, so Paul said in the Ephesians, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil."(6:12) But the evil spirit lives and acts in human and relationship with others, so the evil spirit appears to us through our personality. Therefore, our fight is in our human relationship, so Jesus said, "a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- a man's enemies will be the members of his own household."     

Our problem always is in the inside of us. Church's enemy first is in church rather than the world. If we don’t see an enemy of the inside, we can't perform a spiritual war. First, we must fight an enemy of our inside. Second, we must fight against Satan of the inside of church. The Satan always attacks church through a friendly relationship just like Paul’s testimony. Therefore, we must never forget the fact that our relationship must be in Jesus Christ and in a body of Christ.

Do you want to receive the sword that Jesus gave you? If you do, pray for it. If you received it, use it to fight against an evil spirit. Then get a victory. This is God’s pleasure.

Let us pray, Heavenly Father, we thank you for your words this morning. We are grateful that you called us a holy army and give us the powerful sword. Lord, help us to perform the holy spiritual war. Empower us to use the sword in our faith life. May the Holy Spirit help us to be afraid an evil spirit and get a victory in the holy spiritual war. Then May all of us become a healthy church and a body of Christ. In Jesus name I pray.  Amen.
