오늘 우리가 눈으로 보고 있는 것이 전부가 아닙니다. 그러니까 지금으로부터 1950년으로 거슬러 올라가게 되면, 그때 한국은 6·25동란을 맞았습니다. 남쪽 끝까지 밀렸다가 유엔군의 도움으로 북상하게 된 것인데, 전 강토가 폐허가 됐습니다. 그때 일반 사람들의 생활이 얼마나 어려웠는지 모릅니다. 하루의 끼니도 때우기 어려운 형편이었습니다. 그렇게 어려운 환경이었습니다.

그때는 한국에 기독교가 들어온 지 100년이 넘지 않은 때였으니까 거의 유교와 불교의 문화였습니다. 그렇기 때문에 스님들이 많았습니다. 어느 날 나를 보고 대모님께 "당신 딸이냐?" 해서 그렇다고 하니까 "아들 열 부럽지 않을 딸이니 잘 키워라."라고 했습니다. 그리고 "이 딸이 어려서 시집을 가게 될 텐데, 그 상대가 되는 사람은 나이가 조금 많을 것이다. 그런데 육 해 공을 지배하는 그런 재력을 가진 사람이다."라는 말을 했습니다.

지금은 참 감회가 깊은 말이기는 하지만, 50년 전을 생각하게 될 때는 그것이 상상도 안 되고, 하늘의 별 따기보다도 어렵다고 생각될 때였습니다. 그때 지나가던 스님이 예언한 것이 오늘날 이뤄졌습니다. (2007.5.1 일본 후쿠오카)

今日私たちが目で見ているものがすべてではありません。今から1950年にさかのぼってみると、その頃の韓国では朝鮮戦争が起こりました。南の端まで押されていたところ、国連軍の助けで北上するようになったのですが、国中が廃墟となりました。当時の一般人の生活がどれほど厳しかったか分かりません。一日の食事もままならない状況でした。それほど困難な環境でした。

当時は韓国にキリスト教が入ってきてから約100年ほどだったので、ほぼ儒教と仏教の文化でした。ですから僧侶がたくさんいました。ある日、私を見た一人の僧侶が大母様に「あなたの娘か」と聞くのでそうだと答えると、「10人の息子もうらやましくないような娘なので、しっかりと育てなさい」と言いました。

また、「この娘は幼くして結婚することになるが、その相手となる人は年が少しいっている人であろう。陸、海、空を支配する、そのようなオカをもった人物である」と言いました。

今となってはとても感慨深い話ではありますが、50年前を考えると、それが想像もつかず、空の星を取ることよりも難しいと思うような時でした。その時に通りがかりの僧侶が予言したことが、今日成就しているのです。（2007.5.1,日本、福岡）

What we see today with our own eyes is not everything. Tracing back to 1950, it was the year the Korean Civil War broke out. South Koreans were pushed all the way to the southern end of the peninsula, and only through the help of the UN troops were they able to move northward again, in the process of which the entire nation came to lie in ruins.

You have no idea how difficult the lives of the general public became then. Most of them could not even manage one meal a day. That was how dismal the circumstances were.

At the time, it was not yet 100 years since Christianity had been first introduced into Korea, so the nation mostly followed Confucianism or Buddhism. Therefore, there were many Buddhist monks. One day, one such monk saw me and asked Daemonim, "Is this your daughter?"

When she answered yes, he told her, "She is a daughter worth more than ten sons, so raise her well.” He also added, "Your daughter will get married when she is young to a man much older than her, but he will have the ability to dominate the land, sea and air.”

When I now think about those words, I am deeply moved in my heart, but 50 years ago I could not even imagine what that meant and only thought that it would be more difficult than plucking a star from heaven. The prophecy made by a monk who was passing us by, however, has come true. (2007.05.01, Fukuoka, Japan)
