I Ching(Book of Changes)- Volume 1(Upper Classic)
2. Hexagram 2 : Kun(The Receptive / Earth). ䷁ ......4
▣ Six in the third place : Conceealing one's talents while remaining correct and steadfast;
even if one serves the King, one does not claim personal achievement,
but brings matters to a successful conclusion.
[Explanation]
(Six in the third place) holds its inner light and virtue while staying steadfast and upright.
Even if one engages in the service of the ruler, though they may not claim personal achievement, they will bring the matter to a fine and successful completion.
[Commentary]
(Six in the third place) represents a position that possesses capability,
yet is neither central nor strictly in its correct position.
Although one can receive the seeds of Heaven and sprout them into full bloom,
one must not use that ability solely for oneself[含章,함장 - Hamjang / concealing brilliance].
It requires patience to hold those seeds internally and preserve the righteous way for
a given period of time [可貞,가정 -Gajeong / Remaining steadfast].
However, if one faithfully and quietly follows the affairs of yang(the active force),
of men, and of the ruler[或從王事,혹종왕사 -Hokjongwangsa / Serving the king's affairs],
even if immediate success is not visible
to the eye[無成, museong / Claiming no personal success],
one will achieve afine and successful conclusion[有終, Yujong / Bringing to a good end].
This is because a wife serves in place of the success of her husband and children
Gain muyusu jaejunggwe jeonggil].
In other words, it is because the Earth acts on behalf of Heaven[代天工,대천공-Daecheongong].
Put another way, since the Earth could potentially defy nature and fail to sprout the seeds,
this passage also addresses the concern of a wife receiving seeds but failing to gine birth.
Confucius views this as an 'Opportunity of Kun(Earth),'
"Concealing brilliance to remain steadfast means waiting for the right time to unfold
one's abilities[含章可貞 以時發也,함장가정 이시발야 -Hamjanggajeong ishibalya],
and following the king's affairs is a crucial, high-stakes opportunity to illuminate the giory
of the Earth's path[或從王事 地光大也,혹종왕사 지광대야 -Hokjongwangsa jiguangdaeya]."
This is because if ☱(兌,태 -TuilDae) represents the mouth,☶(艮,간 -Gen/Gan) represents
harboring and nurturing all mountains, streams, plants, and trees[含蓄,함축 - Hamsuk],
which is regarded as a core virtue of 坤(곤, kun/Earth).
Since 坤(곤, Earth) lacks 1 and 乾(건, Heaven) lacks 10,
乾(건, Heaven) becomes the beginning, and 坤(곤, Earth) becomes the completion.
Here, some interpretations also view[含章,함장 - Hamjang] as the menstrual cycle
of a woman or the estrus period of animals.
At the age of 14, a woman's Tiangui(heavenly water/fertility) opens, her uterus opens,
and the Ren mai(Conception Vessel) pulse begins to beat,
establishing her readiness to receive seeds―which is interpreted as[含章,함장 - Hamjang].
Also, in the phrase"无成有終(무성유종 - No achievement, but a successful conclusion),"
No achievement)" means having the strenght to nurture a seed once received,
but not having the authority to plant the seed oneself.
Wang Bi interprets this as : 'When working, do not take the lead;
reapond when called upon, wait for orders brfore taking achtion,
and keep your talents hidden while knowing how to adapt to the proper time."
In other words, when there is work to be done, one should simply follow and not dare
to step forward, playing passive―this is the principle of 或從王事(혹종왕사 - Or following
the King's affairs)," meaning aon should act according to others' orders without taking
the initiative to achieve " 无成有終(무성유종 - No achievement, but a successful conclusion)."
Therefore, although ☶(艮,간 -Gen/Mountain) is the position of " 終萬物始萬物(종만물시만물
- Ending all things and starting all things),"
Six in the Third Line[Six 3] is at the end of the lnner Trigram(內卦,내괘) .
Thus, while there is a "有終(유종 - Successful conclusion)," the work has not yet been
fully completed or succeeded, making it "无成(무성 - No achievement)."
Furthermore, the third position is originally the place of Yang(陽,양).
Dongpa(Su Shi) provided a more detailed interpretation as follows :
"The third position possesses the Virtue(德덕) of Yang,
but if one openly uses that Yang Energy(陽氣,양기),
it cannot serve as the Kun Trigram(坤卦,곤괘).
Therefore, even if there is brightness/wisdom,
one must conceal it and not display it outward.
Right now, as it is Yin(陰,음), one might worry whether it can stay righteous,
but because it is a person of talent possessing a brright 'Pattern/Mark(章,장)',
it can remain righteous.
For example, being righteouss without claiming exclusive devotion means
that even without personal accomplishment, theree will ultimately be a completion."
Confucius further emphasizes the "Way of Kun(坤道,곤도)" in the wenyan Zhuan
(Commentary on the Words of the Text) :
"The third line represents the case where the Kun Trigram(坤卦,곤괘) "
changes into Ji San Qian(地山謙卦,지산겸괘 - Earth- Mountain Modesty).
Even if Yin(陰,음) possesses outstanding within[陰雖有美含之,음수유미함지].
It follows and assists the affairs of superiors [
It doees not claim merit for itself [
This is the Way of the obedient Earth [
the Way of a beloved wife[妻道也,처도야], and the Way of a loyal minister[臣道也,신도야]."
Thereforee, the text concludes with:
"The Way of the Earth(地道,지도) does not take the lead on its own;
it merely receives the mandate of Heaven to bring things to a successful and
Hou Yang adds the following commentary to Confucius's Wenyan Zhuan
(Commentary on the Words of the Text) :
"King Wu held deeply in his heart the plan to strike the Shang(Yin) dynasty
as he remembered his grandfather Jili(季歷,계력), who was killed by the Shang dynasty.
While thoroughly preparing for the Eastrn Campaign,
he had to lower himself and serve the tyrant with humility.
Confucius is praising this wisdom of King Wu."
In this spirit, Hou Yang translates "无成有終(무성유종 - No achievement,
but a successful conclusion)" as "carrying out one's task to the end without
expecting to win the trust of King Zhou."
Perhaps this sounds like saying it is even harder for a person to preserve oneself
by fulfilling the way of husband and wife than to seek honor, power, or wealth.
Though one may live and depart as"无成有終(무성유종 - No achievement,
but a successful conclusion)" without the world's recognition, a person with shallow
insight and insuffcient study finds even "含章(함장 - Concealing brilliance)" difficult.
Self-refinement(切磋琢磨,절차탁마 - Jeol-cha-tak-ma) and Concealing Brilliance
(含章,함장 - Ham-jang) : Concealing one's brilliance (含章,함장),
rather than showing off alluring behavior, is the true condition of beauty,
and the embodiment of this concealed brilliance is the fundamental root
of governing all creation.
For reference, since the Kun Trigram(坤卦,곤괘) transitions toward Ji San Qian
Earth- Mountain Modesty),
one must wait for the right time and act with humility to achieve their dreams.
The beauty of the Way of Kun(坤道,곤도) lies in its inheritance
of the King's Way(王道,왕도), just as a wife can conceive a noble child.
Therefore, even if one occuoies the position of Kun(坤,곤), there is a need to build
the capability to manage the King's affairs(王事,왕사).
Anyone may attain the position of king,
but practicing the King's Way(王道,왕도) is difficult.
This can also be understood in the sense that while one may realize the truth,
practicing it is truly difficult.
Rether than stepping forward to seek fame, staying within one;s proper bounds
in one's position will naturally cause misfortune to retreat.
Possessing talent and receiving recognition is "含章可貞(함장가정 - Concealing
brilliance yet remaining steadfast)."
Being granted at least a minimal official position or role is " 或從王事(혹종왕사 -
Or following the King's affairs)."
However, with "无成有終(무성유종 - No ultimate personal achievement, but a successful
completion)," success until the very end may not be guaranteed, so timing is key.
In the Silk Texts(帛書,백서 - Mawangdui I Ching manuscripts), it is also evaluated :
"On the thied day, as everything was present within the mind,
the future could be predicted.
Although one cannot achieve complete ultimate success while handling the King's
affairs, there will still be meaningful results."
