직지 역해시집이 세상에 나오기까지

1997년 10월, 미국의 라이프 잡지는 지난 1,000년 동안 인류를 바꾼 100대 사건으로 쿠텐베르크의 42행 성서를 1위로 선정했다. 반면에 42행 성서보다 78년 앞서 간행된 현존하는 세계 최고 금속활자본인 우리의 직지는 100위 안에도 선정되지 못했다. 직지의 본향, 대한민국 청주에 사는 한 사람으로서 이 소식을 접했을 때 부끄러움을 금치 못했다. 1377년 우주에서 별 한 줌이 청주 하늘에 쏟아진 세계 최초 금속활자로 인쇄된 별똥별 직지, 유네스코 세계 기록 유산인데 대한민국 사람들의 자존감까지 짓밟힌 사건이 아닐 수 없다.

나는 이를 계기로 직지의 고장 한 시민으로서 우리의 직지를 열심히 학습하면서 직지 강연, 직지 동시와 직지 시, 칼럼, 문학지나, 언론에 우리의 직지를 홍보하는데 열정을 쏟아왔다. 그러면서 “대한민국 직지의 글로벌 방안”이란 주제를 담은 파워포인트를 제작하여 전주시, 청주예술의전당, 청주아트홀, 혁신대학, 충북노인대학, 충북삼락회, 도내 학교와 도서관, 전국 작가 세미나, 온새미로 충청포럼 강연 시마다 자랑스러운 직지의 얼과 홍보에 열정을 쏟아 왔다.

하지만, 한자로 구성된 직지에 나오는 내용이 무엇인지 직지의 본질과 내용을 홍보하지 못하는 아쉬움을 매번 느껴왔다. 한문으로 이루어진 직지를 한글로 역해하여 많은 사람에게 직지 내용을 이해하기 쉽고, 직지 시 향기가 품어낼 수 있음은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 그러나 누군가 해야 할 위대한 과업이다. 나는 강연을 지속하면서 시적 향기를 품는 직지 역해시집을 만들어 내고 싶은 마음이 늘 가슴속에 맺혀 있었다.

하지만, 소도 언덕을 비벼야 오르듯이 간행물을 찾기 위해 기관과 도서관을 찾아다녔으나 기존의 문헌을 찾을 수가 없었다. 그러던 중 지인의 책방에서 2006년 청주시가 의뢰하여 동국대학교 역경원에서 산문 형식으로 펴낸 『청주의 자랑 直指』를 어렵게 찾아냈다. 하늘을 날 것처럼 기뻤다. 혜은사 덕산 주지 스님도 2014년에 산문 형식으로 발간한 『直指心經』 책도 주셨다. 스님께서는 나에게

“불교인도 아니신 분이 직지 역해시집을 집필하신다니 고개가 숙여 집니 다.”

라는 말씀을 듣는 순간, 만감이 교차했다.

나는 여러 날 골몰하다 직지의 장마다 상단에 직지 영인본 원문 사진을 하나하나 촬영해서 배열하고, 가운데는 직지 원문을 한글로 한 줌씩 역해한 시를 담고, 하단에 직지 원문 활자를 넣는 아이디어가 번득 떠오르던 날은 황홀함에 쌓여 잠을 이룰 수가 없었다. 정성과 노력으로 다져진 모든 것들이 이뤄진다면 국내 최초의 직지 역해시집이 아닐 수 없다.

『詩香으로 물든 대한민국 直指』로 책명을 정하고, 상·하권으로 발간하기로 했다. 고어와 어려운 한자는 풀어 가면서 밤늦도록 노안을 무릅쓰면서 원고를 작성하였다. 직지 원문 한 글자마다 감동의 시어로 변환되면서 많은 사람이 한눈에 이해하기 쉽도록 집필하겠다는 부푼 희망과 환상이 온몸에 전율 되었다.

나는 학생들과 함께 평생 교직의 길을 걸어왔기에 청소년들에게도 우리의 직지를 함께 알리고 싶어 『직지야, 우리랑 놀자』라는 직지 동시집도 출간하기로 했다. 그간 동시집, 수필집, 칼럼집, 교육학집을 집필하면서 기뻐만 했는데 이번에는 왜 가슴이 유난히 콩닥콩닥 뛸까?

드디어 오랜 시간을 거쳐 작성한 원고를 다듬고 다듬어 직지 역해시집 상·하권과 직지 동시집을 완성한 감동의 날을 맞이했다. 긴 여정을 통해 세 권의 값진 직지 역해시집과 직지 동시집을 발간할 날만 남아 있다. 어렵게 집필한 직지 역해시집을 나 개인이 소량 발간한다면 의미가 함축되며, 직지 홍보가 극히 제한됨을 인지했다. 다량 발간 보급을 위해 관계 기관을 찾으며 동분서주했으나 좌절의 길에 놓였다. 나는 희망을 놓지 않고 열림의 길을 향해 달려갔다.

‘지성이면 감천이다.’라는 옛말이 있듯이 정초에 청주상공회의소, 금성개발 두 분의 회장을 찾아뵈었다. 세 권의 원고를 검토하시더니 이렇게 훌륭한 직지 역해시집과 직지 동시집은 처음이라며, 발간비와 이를 홍보할 수 있는 직지 콘서트 예산까지 지원해 주시겠다는 말씀을 듣는 순간, 가슴이 벅찼다.

밤잠을 설치면서 고뇌하며 집필한 세 권의 직지 역해시집과 동시집이 세상에 나왔다. 직지 역해시집 발간기념 직지 콘서트를 청주아트홀(2025.9.25)에서 500여 명의 시민들과 콘서트에 참석은 못 했지만, 역해시집을 요구하시는 모든 분께도 무상으로 드렸다. 우리의 마음과 결을 품어주는 대한민국 직지 역해시집이 세상에 태어나 직지의 내용과 참뜻을 널리 홍보할 수 있어 가슴 뿌듯했다. 이날, 직지 콘서트에 참가한 시민들에게 직지의 고장 청주에서 세계 직지엑스포를 개최하자는 서명까지 받아낸 과업도 내겐 잊을 수 없다.

어려운 여건 속에서 국내 최초로 운문 형식의 『詩香으로 물든 대한민국 直指』 상·하권의 역해시집과 『직지야, 우리랑 놀자』직지 동시집을 세상에 태어나도록 큰 도움을 주신 소중한 분들께 감사를 드린다.

앞으로 직지 역해시집이 영어, 불어, 스페인어, 일어 등 다국어로 번역 발간되어 지구촌에 자랑스러운 대한민국 직지를 당당히 알릴 수 있는 그날을 손꼽아 기다려본다.

How the Annotated Poetry Collection of Jikji Came into Being

In October 1997, the American magazine Life selected Gutenberg’s 42-line Bible as the single most significant event among the one hundred milestones that shaped humanity over the past millennium. In stark contrast, Jikji—the world’s oldest extant book printed with movable metal type, published a full seventy-eight years before Gutenberg’s Bible—was entirely left off the list. As a proud resident of Cheongju, the very birthplace of Jikji, I could not suppress a profound sense of shame and indignation when I learned of this omission. Jikji, a meteor-like cultural masterpiece forged in 1377 with the world's first movable metal type, is a registered UNESCO Memory of the World Heritage treasure. In a very real sense, overlooking it felt like a blow to the cultural pride of the Korean people.

This realization became a defining turning point in my life. As a citizen of Cheongju, I threw myself into studying the text and promoting its legacy through every medium available to me: children’s verses, formal poetry, newspaper columns, literary journals, and public lectures. I prepared a presentation titled "Globalizing Korea’s Jikji" and passionately introduced its spirit and historical weight at forums across the region—including Jeonju, the Cheongju Arts Center, Cheongju Art Hall, Innovation University, Chungbuk Senior Citizens University, the Chungbuk Samrak Society, schools, libraries, national writers’ seminars, and the Onsaemiro Chungcheong Forum.

Yet, I was continually met with the frustrating reality that I could not adequately convey the true soul of Jikji. Because the original text is preserved in classical Chinese, its profound philosophical depth remains inaccessible to the general public. Translating Jikji into modern Korean, and further refining its dense wisdom into accessible, moving poetry, was a staggering undertaking. Nevertheless, it was a task that someone had to claim. Throughout my years of lecturing, I quietly nurtured a heartfelt dream to create an annotated poetic interpretation of Jikji—one deeply imbued with the fragrance of verse.

Like an ox circling the base of a steep hill before gathering the strength to climb, I spent months visiting countless institutions and libraries in search of reference materials, only to find very little that could guide me. Then, by a stroke of fortune in an acquaintance’s bookstore, I discovered Cheongju’s Pride: Jikji, a prose translation commissioned by the City of Cheongju and published in 2006 by the Institute for the Translation of Buddhist Scriptures at Dongguk University. I was utterly overjoyed, feeling as though I could soar through the heavens.

Later, Venerable Deoksan, the head monk of Hyeeun Temple, kindly gifted me his own 2014 prose edition of the Jikji Simgyeong. He remarked, "I bow my head in admiration that someone who is not even a practicing Buddhist has undertaken the monumental task of writing an annotated poetic interpretation of Jikji." Hearing those words, a torrent of emotion washed over me.

After many sleepless nights of contemplation, a structural vision finally struck me. Each section of the book would be beautifully stratified: at the top of the page, a crisp photograph of the original Jikji facsimile; in the middle, my poetic Korean translations interpreting the core of the text; and at the bottom, reproductions of the original metal-type characters themselves. The night this blueprint dawned on me, I was so overwhelmed with excitement that sleep was impossible. If I could pull this off through sheer dedication and perseverance, it would become Korea’s very first annotated poetry collection based on Jikji.

I titled the work Jikji of Korea Dyed with the Fragrance of Poetry and decided to publish it in two volumes. Night after night, straining my aging eyes, I labored over the manuscript, meticulously unravelling archaic expressions and dense Chinese characters. As each character of the ancient text transformed into poetic language, my heart raced with the anticipation that readers would finally be able to grasp the true essence of Jikji at a single glance.

Having devoted my entire career to education, I also wanted to introduce Jikji to younger generations. To that end, I resolved to pen a companion collection of children's poems entitled Jikji, Come Play with Us. Though I had published numerous volumes of children's verse, essays, columns, and educational texts throughout my life, I had never felt a thrill quite like this. I wondered, why did my heart beat so fervently for this project above all others?

At long last, after years of grueling revision and refinement, I completed the manuscripts for both the two-volume collection and the children's book. The only hurdle left was publication. I quickly realized that if I were to fund this privately, the print run would be limited, severely restricting its reach. I knocked on the doors of numerous institutions seeking support for a wider distribution, but met only with cold disappointment. Still, I refused to abandon hope.

As the old Korean proverb goes, "Sincerity moves Heaven." At the beginning of the year, I secured a meeting with the chairmen of the Cheongju Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Geumseong Development. After reviewing my three manuscripts, they expressed amazement, noting they had never encountered a work that interpreted Jikji with such artistic depth. To my immense gratitude, they offered to finance not only the entire publication but also a live Jikji concert to launch the books. My heart overflowed with gratitude.

Thus, the three volumes that had cost me years of sleepless anxiety and deep, agonizing reflection were finally born into the world. On September 25, 2025, a grand commemorative Jikji concert celebrating the publication was held at the Cheongju Art Hall, filled to capacity with approximately 500 citizens. Those who were unable to attend but requested copies also received them free of charge. I felt a deep, resonant sense of fulfillment knowing that these poetic interpretations—reflecting the true spirit and sensibilities of our people—were out in the world, illuminating the content and meaning of Jikji. One particular achievement from that day remains etched in my memory. During the concert, we successfully gathered signatures from hundreds of citizens backing a formal proposal for Cheongju to host a World Jikji Expo.

I extend my deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to everyone who generously supported the publication of Korea's first poetic interpretations of Jikji—the two volumes of Jikji of Korea Dyed with the Fragrance of Poetry and the children's poetry collection Jikji, Come Play with Us—despite the countless challenges involved.

Looking ahead, I eagerly await the day when these annotated collections will be translated into English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and many other languages, allowing this proud jewel of Korean cultural history to stand confidently in the global spotlight where it truly belongs.
