＜The Wheel＞ '

The Wheel

by D.J. Yoon

I hurry through the morning meal, sending

My child to school

My husband off to work.

The radio tuned to KBS FM
Through the splash of dishes being washed
A cupful of classical music pouring out
I sip, set it down, then sip again.

I stop by the bank to pay a few bills
Linger for a long while

Over an apartment notice
Tucked into a corner of the newspaper.

I step into the church prayer room
Leave behind a single line of prayer
Then walk out.

A block of tofu

A bag of bean sprouts

A pollack
Bought at the alley market toward evening
Simmering together in a bubbling stew.

bubbling bubbling

At the dinner table

Waiting for my husband and child

To come home I let

The rest of the day simmer softly.

simmering simmering

And the sun comes rolling that far away.

The Wheel

Simple Review 感想

The Wheel is a simple and warm poem about everyday family life.

It shows a woman going through her day from morning to evening.

She makes breakfast, sends her family off, washes the dishes, pays bills, prays at church, buys food, and cooks dinner.

These are very ordinary things, but the poem shows that they can still be beautiful and important.

The image of ‘a cupful of classical music’ is lovely because the woman enjoys music for a short time during her busy day.

At the end, she makes a warm stew and waits for her husband and child to come home.

The title ‘The Wheel’ shows how life goes around and around.

Morning becomes evening, the family leaves and comes home, and another day will soon begin.

The sun ‘rolling that away’ also fits the idea of a wheel.

This quiet and gentle poem shows us that love and happiness can be found in the small things we do every day.
