We say a great many things in church (and out of church too) /without thinking of what we are saying. 

* 전목인 동명사구  thinking of what we are saying. 

* 전목인 의문사절 what we are saying [목].  접속사인 의문사는 목적 역할도 대신함

For instance, we say in the Creed “I believe in [the forgiveness of sins]”. 

* believe in ; to be confident that something is effective and right:

I had been saying it /for several years /before I asked [myself] [why it was in the Creed]. 

At first sight, it seems /hardly worth putting in.

 “If one is a Christian,” I thought, “of course one believes in [the forgiveness of sins].

It goes without saying.” 

* 과거완료+진행시제 had+pp+v-ing ; had been saying 과거에 죽 진행되었던 동작

* 4 형식 asked [myself] [why it was in the Creed]. 간접목적에게 직접목적을 동사하다

* 불자 seems의 보어인 전치사구 /hardly worth putting in. (worth는 전치사로 설명됨 : equal in value to)

* 전목인 동명사구 putting in

* It goes without saying; used to indicate that something is so obvious, self-evident, or generally accepted 설명 불필요

But [the people //who compiled the Creed] apparently thought that this was a part of our belief, 

which we needed [to be reminded of /every time () we went to church]. 

* 주어인 명사구 [the people //who compiled the Creed] 명+형절/주격 관대절

* Apparently ; 보아하니, 듣자 하니, ~인 것 같다

* 삽입절/목적격 관대절 which we needed to be reminded of [전목] /every time~ 추가설명 역할(관계사는 전목역할도 함)

* 목적인 부정사구 to be reminded of /every time~ 

* 전목인 명사구  /every time (that) we went to church. 

And I have begun [to see that, as far as I’m concerned, they were right]. 

To believe in the forgiveness of sins is not so easy /as I thought. 

[Real belief in it] is the sort of thing //that easily slips away /if we don’t keep on [polishing it up].

* 목적인 부정사구  [to see that~],  * see의 목적인 that절 내의 부사절 접속사인 as far as ~하는 한 (범위나 제한을 뜻함)

* 주어인 부정사구 To believe in the forgiveness of sins (독립문에서 주어 떼고 동사에 to를 붙이면 부정사구로 쓸 수 있음)

We believe that God forgives [us] [our sins];

 but also that He will not do /so /unless we forgive [other people] [their sins against us]. 

* 4 형식 forgives [us] [our sins];

* 대동사 do = forgive

There is no doubt about the second part of this statement. 

It is in the Lord’s Prayer, it was emphatically stated by our Lord. 

If you don’t forgive, you will not be forgiven. 

No exceptions to it. 

* 명사 부정으로 된 부정문 no doubt about (한글엔 없는 표현이기에 동사부정으로 의역함)

* 수동태 be+pp ; was stated, be forgiven. (be 동사는 수동태 구성을 위한 역할인데 조동사 뒤에는 원형이 쓰임)

* (there is) No exceptions to it. 

He doesn’t say that we are to forgive [other people’s sins], 

provided () they are not too frightful, or provided () there are [extenuating circumstances, or anything of that sort]. 

We are to forgive [them all], however spiteful, however mean, however often they are repeated. 

If we don’t, we shall be forgiven [none of our own].

해석

We say a great many things in church (and out of church too) /without thinking of what we are saying. 
우리는 교회 안에서 (교회 밖에서도 역시) 우리가 말하는 게 뭔지에 대해 생각도 없이 무지 많은 것들을 말한다

* 본인도 주기도문을 외우면서 그 뜻을 곰곰 생각하며 하지 못하다가 머리에 서리가 내릴 때야 비로소 깨달은 것은

첫 구절인 하늘에 계신 '우리 아버지'라는 말이 심각하게 의미심장한 건 예수님도 하나님을 '아버지'로 부르셨는데

우리도 똑같이 호칭하는 건 우리가 감히 예수님과 동급으로 올려진 점이고 '우리'라 할 때 신자 모두 형제된 점이다

For instance, we say in the Creed “I believe in the forgiveness of sins”. 
한 예로, 우리는 사도신경에서 나는 죄의 용서를 믿습니다라고 말한다

I had been saying it for several years before I asked myself why it was in the Creed. 
나는  내가 내 자신에게 왜 용서가 사도신경에 있는지 묻기 전까지 여러 해 동안 말해왔었다

At first sight, it seems hardly worth putting in.

처음 볼 때는 용서가 들어갈 가치가 거의 없어 보였다

 “If one is a Christian,” I thought, “of course one believes in the forgiveness of sins. It goes without saying.” 

내 생각에 한 사람이 기독인이면 물론 죄 용서를 믿는다고 생각했었다. 그건 말할 필요도 없는 일이다

But the people who compiled the Creed apparently thought that this was a part of our belief, 

그러나 사도신경을 정리한 사람들은 이것이 우리 신앙의 한 부분이라는 것을 분명하게 생각했던 것 같은데

which we needed to be reminded of every time we went to church. 

그건 우리가 교회 갈 때마다 상기시킬 필요가 있는 것이었다

* 자주 상기시켜야 될 만큼 우리는 잘 잊어버리고 딴청 부리는 걸 우리 자신이 모른다면 구제불능이다

And I have begun to see that, as far as I’m concerned, they were right. 

그리고 나는 내가 고려하는 한 그들이 옳았다고 보기를 시작했었다

To believe in the forgiveness of sins is not so easy as I thought. 

죄 용서를 믿는 것은 내가 생각했었던 만큼 그렇게 쉽지 않다

* 예수님은 우리의 죄를 용서하시기 위해 채찍에 살이 찟기시고 못과 가시와 창에 찔리는 아픔을 겪으셨다

Real belief in it is the sort of thing that easily slips away if we don’t keep on polishing it up.

진짜로 죄 용서를 믿는 믿음은 만약 연마/연습을 계속하지 않으면 쉽사리 빠져나가는 종류의 일이다

We believe that God forgives us our sins;
우리는 하나님께서 우리에게 우리의 죄를 용서하시는 것을 믿는다

 but also that He will not do so unless we forgive other people their sins against us. 

또한 하나님께서는 다른 사람들이 우리에게 한 그들의 죄를 용서하지 않는 한 우리를 용서하시지 않는 것도 믿는다

There is no doubt about the second part of this statement. 

이 진술문/문장의 둘째 부분에 관한 것은 의문의 여지가 없다

It is in the Lord’s Prayer, it was emphatically stated by our Lord. 

그것은 주기도문에 있고, 그것은 우리의 주님께서 강조적으로 진술/말씀하신 것이다

* 일반적으로 주기도문은 예배 절차상 습관적으로 하는 하나의 기도문처럼 중얼거리듯 하시는 분도 없잖아 있지만 

사실 주기도문은 2천여 년 전에 예수님 마음에서 입으로 나온 음성이기에 암송자는 주님의 음성을 암송하는 것이다 

(2천여 년 전에 예수님께서 입으로 내신 말소리가 2천여 년 후 오늘날 우리의 입에서 나온다는 게 안 놀라운가???) 

If you don’t forgive you will not be forgiven. 

당신이 용서를 안 한다면 당신은 용서받지 못할 것이다

No exceptions to it. 

그것에 대한 예외란 없다

He doesn’t say that we are to forgive other people’s sins, 

예수님께서는 우리가 다른 사람의 죄를 어떤 상황에서 용서하기로 되어 있다고 말씀하지 않으시는데

provided they are not too frightful, 

그건 그들의 죄가 너무 경악스럽지 않은 것이나

or provided there are extenuating circumstances, or anything of that sort. 

참작할 상황이 있는 것 또는 그런 어떤 종류가 있다는 조건하에서 용서하라는 게 아니다는 것이다

We are to forgive them all, however spiteful, however mean, however often they are repeated. 
우리는, 얼마나 악의적이든, 얼마나 사납든, 얼마나 자주 반복하든지,  그것들 모두를 용서하기로 되어있다

If we don’t, we shall be forgiven none of our own.

우리가 하지 않는다면, 우리는 우리 자신의 아무 죄라도 용서받지 못할 것이다

* 이 말이 맞는 건 만냥 빚 탕감받은 자가 백냥 빚진자를 용서 안해서 자기가 받은 용서도 취소된 일화가 증명한다

이에 주인이 저를 불러다가 말하되 악한 종아 네가 빌기에 내가 네 빚을 전부 탕감하여 주었거늘 

내가 너를 불쌍히 여김과 같이 너도 네 동관을 불쌍히 여김이 마땅치 아니하냐 하고 

주인이 노하여 그 빚을 다 갚도록 저를 옥졸들에게 붙이니라 

너희가 각각 중심으로 형제를 용서하지 아니하면 내 천부께서도 너희에게 이와 같이 하시리라
