‘Trouble’ is a short and funny poem about how easily people can misunderstand each other. The poem begins with a playful connection between ‘half-speech’ and ‘half a chicken,’ turning words into an amusing image of food. ‘One chicken leg’ from the speaker’s mouth becomes ‘a double helping of misunderstanding’ in the listener’s ears. This shows how a small word or comment can sometimes become a much bigger problem when another person hears it differently. The poem is humorous, but it also carries a meaningful message about communication: what we say and what others understand are not always the same. The final question What’s the trouble? makes us smile while also asking us to think about where misunderstandings really begin.
