고린도전서 14:1-5

사랑을 따라 구하라 신령한 것을 사모하되 특별히 예언을 하려고 하라 방언을 말하는 자는 사람에게 하지 아니하고 하나님께 하나니 이는 알아 듣는 자가 없고 그 영으로 비밀을 말함이니라 그러나 예언하는 자는 사람에게 말하여 덕을 세우며 권면하며 안위하는 것이요 방언을 말하는 자는 자기의 덕을 세우고 예언하는 자는 교회의 덕을 세우나니 나는 너희가 다 방언 말하기를 원하나 특별히 예언하기를 원하노라 방언을 말하는 자가 만일 교회의 덕을 세우기 위하여 통역하지 아니하면 예언하는 자만 못하니라

사랑을 따라 신령한 은사를 사모해야 합니다. 방언을 말하는 것은 하나님께 기도하며 자신의 마음과 사정을 하나님께 아뢰는 것입니다. 방언은 사람에게 말하는 것이 아니라 하나님께 하는 것이므로, 다른 사람이나 교회의 덕을 세우기 위한 것이 아닙니다. 그러므로 방언을 알아듣는 사람이 없으며, 귀신들도 그 뜻을 알지 못합니다. 오직 하나님께서 방언 통역의 은사를 주신 사람만이 그 내용을 알 수 있습니다.

하나님께서는 필요에 따라 방언 통역의 은사를 나누어 주십니다. 그러나 이 은사를 받았다고 자랑해서는 안 됩니다. 모든 은사는 전적으로 하나님의 능력이며, 영원히 자신의 소유가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 거두시면 그것으로 끝입니다. 반면 예언은 사람들에게 하나님의 뜻을 전하여 덕을 세우고, 권면하며, 위로하여 회개와 순종의 삶으로 인도하는 은사입니다.

여기서 말씀하는 예언은 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 것을 의미합니다. 성경의 말씀을 바르게 선포하여 하나님의 뜻을 알리는 것이 참된 예언입니다. 결코 인간의 지식이나 생각에서 나오는 사사로운 예언을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 이러한 거짓 예언은 오히려 하나님의 말씀을 대적하는 것입니다.

오늘날에도 많은 교회에서 예수님의 이름을 빙자해 거짓 예언을 하는 경우가 있습니다. 거짓 예언을 따르면 결국 성경 말씀을 듣지 않게 되고, 순종의 삶을 버리며, 죄를 지어도 회개하지 않는 길로 나아가게 됩니다.

구약 시대에 하나님께서는 거짓 예언을 하거나 거짓 꿈으로 백성을 미혹하는 거짓 선지자들을 매우 엄중하게 다루셨습니다. 그들은 하나님의 백성을 혼미하게 하여 하나님께 불순종하게 만들고, 우상숭배와 멸망의 길로 이끌었기 때문입니다.

예레미야 23:16

만군의 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 너희에게 예언하는 선지자들의 말을 듣지 말라. 그들은 너희에게 헛된 것을 가르치나니 그들이 말한 묵시는 자기 마음으로 말미암은 것이요 여호와의 입에서 나온 것이 아니니라.

예레미야 23:32

여호와의 말씀에 내가 거짓 꿈을 예언하는 선지자를 치리라. 그들이 그 거짓말과 헛된 자랑으로 내 백성을 미혹하나 내가 그들을 보내지 아니하였으며 명하지 아니하였나니 그들은 이 백성에게 아무 유익이 없느니라. 여호와의 말이니라.

에스겔 13:6

그들이 허탄한 것과 거짓된 점괘를 보며 말하기를 여호와께서 말씀하셨다 하나 여호와께서 보내지 아니하셨으되 그들은 그 말이 응하기를 바라느니라

구약 시대에 하나님께서는 거짓 예언을 하거나 거짓 꿈으로 백성을 미혹하는 선지자들을 죽이라고 명하셨습니다(신 13:1-5; 18:20). 그 이유는 그들이 하나님의 백성을 하나님께 불순종하게 만들고 우상숭배와 멸망의 길로 이끌었기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 거짓 선지자를 매우 엄중하게 심판하셨습니다.

그러므로 오늘날 우리도 사람의 말이나 체험보다 하나님의 말씀인 성경을 기준으로 모든 것을 분별해야 합니다. 참된 예언은 언제나 성경의 진리를 선포하여 사람들을 회개와 순종으로 인도합니다. 그러나 거짓 예언은 사람의 마음에서 나온 말로 성경을 떠나게 하고 죄를 가볍게 여기게 하며 결국 멸망의 길로 이끕니다. 우리는 오직 하나님의 말씀만을 믿고 끝까지 순종하는 삶을 살아야 합니다.

**1 Corinthians 14:1-5**

Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

We must pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts. Speaking in tongues is praying to God and telling Him the thoughts and circumstances of one’s heart. Since speaking in tongues is directed not to people but to God, it is not intended to edify other people or the church. Therefore, no one understands the tongue, and even evil spirits do not understand its meaning. Only those to whom God has given the gift of interpreting tongues can understand what is being spoken.

God distributes the gift of interpreting tongues according to His will and necessity. However, no one should boast because they have received this gift. Every spiritual gift operates entirely through the power of God and does not become the permanent possession of the person who receives it. When God withdraws the gift, its operation ends. Prophecy, however, communicates the will of God to people. It edifies, exhorts, and comforts them, leading them to a life of repentance and obedience.

The prophecy spoken of here means proclaiming the Word of God. True prophecy correctly declares the teachings of Scripture and makes God’s will known. It does not refer to private prophecies arising from human knowledge, imagination, or personal thoughts. Such false prophecies actually oppose the Word of God.

Even today, false prophecies are proclaimed in many churches under the pretense of using the name of Jesus. Those who follow false prophecies eventually stop listening to the teachings of Scripture. They abandon a life of obedience and continue in sin without repentance.

In the Old Testament, God dealt very severely with false prophets who prophesied falsely or misled the people through false dreams. This was because they confused God’s people, caused them to disobey God, and led them into idolatry and the way of destruction.

**Jeremiah 23:16**

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they teach you vanity; they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of Jehovah.

**Jeremiah 23:32**

Behold, I am against them that prophesy lying dreams, saith Jehovah, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their vain boasting: yet I sent them not, nor commanded them; neither do they profit this people at all, saith Jehovah.

**Ezekiel 13:6**

They have seen falsehood and lying divination, that say, Jehovah saith; but Jehovah hath not sent them: and they have made men to hope that the word would be confirmed.

In the Old Testament, God commanded that prophets who gave false prophecies or misled the people through false dreams be put to death (Deuteronomy 13:1-5; 18:20). This was because they caused God’s people to disobey Him and led them into idolatry and the way of destruction. God judged false prophets very severely.

Therefore, even today, we must test and discern everything according to the Bible, the Word of God, rather than according to human words or personal experiences. True prophecy always proclaims the truth of Scripture and leads people to repentance and obedience. False prophecy, however, comes from the human heart, causes people to depart from Scripture, makes them take sin lightly, and ultimately leads them down the path of destruction. We must believe only the Word of God and live in obedience to it until the end.
