고린도전서 14:1-5

사랑을 따라 구하라. 신령한 것을 사모하되 특별히 예언을 하려고 하라. 방언을 말하는 자는 사람에게 하지 아니하고 하나님께 하나니 이는 알아듣는 자가 없고 그 영으로 비밀을 말함이니라. 그러나 예언하는 자는 사람에게 말하여 덕을 세우며 권면하며 안위하는 것이요, 방언을 말하는 자는 자기의 덕을 세우고 예언하는 자는 교회의 덕을 세우나니, 나는 너희가 다 방언 말하기를 원하나 특별히 예언하기를 원하노라. 방언을 말하는 자가 만일 교회의 덕을 세우기 위하여 통역하지 아니하면 예언하는 자만 못하니라.

하나님과 이웃을 사랑하기 위해서는 성령의 각종 은사를 사모해야 합니다. 그 가운데 특별히 예언하기를 힘써야 합니다. 성경에 기록된 예수 그리스도의 말씀은 가장 확실한 예언의 말씀입니다.

방언은 통역되지 않으면 다른 사람이 그 뜻을 알지 못합니다. 그러나 예언의 말씀은 사람들에게 하나님의 뜻을 분명하게 전하여 믿음을 세우고, 권면하며, 위로를 줍니다. 그러므로 교회 공동체에는 통역되지 않는 방언보다 분명한 예언의 말씀이 더욱 큰 유익이 됩니다.

그리스도의 예언의 말씀은 사람들에게 덕을 세우고, 죄를 깨닫게 하며, 회개를 권면하고, 믿음 안에서 위로와 소망을 줍니다. 반면 방언은 성령의 도우심 가운데 자신의 마음을 하나님께 아뢰는 기도이므로, 통역이 없다면 말하는 사람 자신에게는 유익이 되지만 다른 사람에게는 유익을 주지 못합니다.

예수님께서 전하신 예언의 말씀은 무엇입니까? 죄를 회개하고 주님의 말씀에 순종하는 자는 죄 사함을 받고 하나님의 나라의 백성이 된다는 것입니다. 또한 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 자를 하나님께서 기뻐하시며, 오직 예수 그리스도만이 인류의 유일한 구원자이심을 선포하셨습니다.

반대로 회개하지 않고 하나님의 말씀에 불순종하는 자는 결국 멸망에 이르게 된다고 성경은 경고합니다. 또한 창조주 하나님은 성령이시며, 그 성령께서 육신을 입고 이 땅에 오신 분이 예수 그리스도이심을 성경은 증거합니다. 그러므로 성경 말씀을 떠나 인간의 사상과 지식만을 전하는 설교는 사람을 살리는 참된 예언이 아니라 거짓된 가르침이 되는 것이다.

고린도전서 14:6-8

그런즉 형제들아 내가 너희에게 나아가서 방언을 말하고 계시나 지식이나 예언이나 가르치는 것이나 말하지 아니하면 너희에게 무엇이 유익하리요. 혹 저나 거문고와 같이 생명 없는 것이 소리를 낼 때에 그 음의 분별을 내지 아니하면 저 부는 것인지 거문고 타는 것인지 어찌 알게 되리요. 만일 나팔이 분명치 못한 소리를 내면 누가 전쟁을 예비하리요.

거문고가 분명한 소리를 내지 못하면 그 연주는 아무런 의미가 없으며, 듣는 사람에게는 소음에 불과합니다. 또한 적군이 침입했을 때 파수꾼이 분명한 경고의 나팔을 불지 않는다면 백성들은 전쟁을 준비할 수 없습니다.

이와 같이 하나님의 종들이 성경 말씀을 분명하고 바르게 가르치지 않는다면 사람들은 천국을 준비하지 못합니다. 성경 말씀을 올바르게 깨닫지 못한 그리스도인은 아무리 열심히 교회를 다닌다 해도 사탄의 시험과 공격을 이기지 못하고, 결국 육신의 정욕을 따라 살다가 멸망한다.

성령께서 주시는 모든 은사의 목적은 하나입니다. 죄인을 회개하게 하고, 주님의 말씀에 순종하도록 인도하는 것입니다. 그러므로 성령의 은사를 받은 사람이 자신을 높이거나, 돈을 벌거나, 명예를 얻거나, 세상의 쾌락을 추구하는 데 그 은사를 사용한다면, 그는 하나님 앞에서 더 무서운 심판을 받는 것이다.

1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

To love God and our neighbors, we must earnestly desire the various gifts of the Holy Spirit. Among them, we should especially strive to prophesy. The words of Jesus Christ recorded in the Bible are the most certain words of prophecy.

Unless tongues are interpreted, others cannot understand their meaning. However, the word of prophecy clearly conveys God's will to people, building up faith, exhorting, and bringing comfort. Therefore, in the church community, the clear word of prophecy is of far greater benefit than uninterpreted tongues.

The prophetic words of Christ build up people, make them aware of sin, encourage repentance, and offer comfort and hope in faith. On the other hand, speaking in tongues is a prayer pouring out one's heart to God through the help of the Holy Spirit; thus, without interpretation, it benefits the speaker himself but offers no benefit to others.

What is the prophetic word that Jesus proclaimed? It is that whoever repents of their sins and obeys the Lord's word will receive forgiveness of sins and become a citizen of the Kingdom of God. Furthermore, God is pleased with those who love God and love their neighbors, and He declared that Jesus Christ alone is the sole Savior of humanity.

Conversely, the Bible warns that those who do not repent and disobey God's word will ultimately perish. The Scriptures also testify that the Creator God is Spirit, and Jesus Christ is the very Spirit who came to this earth in human flesh. Therefore, any sermon that strays from the Scriptures and only conveys human philosophy and knowledge is not a true prophecy that saves lives, but a false teaching.

1 Corinthians 14:6-8

But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle?

If a harp does not make distinct notes, its playing has no meaning and is nothing more than noise to the listener. Likewise, if a watchman does not blow a clear trumpet call of warning when the enemy attacks, the people cannot prepare for battle.

In the same way, if God's servants do not teach the word of the Bible clearly and correctly, people will not be able to prepare for the Kingdom of Heaven. A Christian who fails to properly understand the Scriptures, no matter how faithfully they attend church, cannot overcome Satan's trials and attacks, and will ultimately perish by following the desires of the flesh.

The purpose of all spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit is one: to lead sinners to repentance and obedience to the Lord's word. Therefore, if someone who has received a spiritual gift uses it to exalt themselves, gain money, seek honor, or pursue worldly pleasures, they will face a far more severe judgment before God.
