고린도전서 14:14–20

내가 만일 방언으로 기도하면 나의 영이 기도하거니와 나의 마음은 열매를 맺지 못하리라 그러면 어떻게 할까 내가 영으로 기도하고 또 마음으로 기도하며 내가 영으로 찬송하고 또 마음으로 찬송하리라 그렇지 아니하면 네가 영으로 축복할 때에 알지 못하는 처지에 있는 자가 네가 무슨 말을 하는지 알지 못하고 네 감사에 어찌 아멘 하리요

너는 감사를 잘하였으나 그러나 다른 사람은 덕 세움을 받지 못하리라 내가 너희 모든 사람보다 방언을 더 말하므로 하나님께 감사하노라 그러나 교회에서 네가 남을 가르치기 위하여 깨달은 마음으로 다섯 마디 말을 하는 것이 일만 마디 방언으로 말하는 것보다 나으니라 형제들아 지혜에는 아이가 되지 말고 악에는 어린 아이가 되라 지혜에는 장성한 사람이 되라.

방언으로만 기도하면 마음이 열매를 맺지 못한다. 그러므로 방언으로도 기도하고 마음으로도 기도해야 한다. 방언으로 기도할 때는 자신도 그 뜻을 분명히 알지 못하지만, 마음으로 기도할 때는 정확히 아는 것이다.

사도 바울은 다른 사람들보다 방언 기도를 더 많이 하였다. 그것은 자신에게 덕을 세우기 위함이었다. 어려운 환경 속에서 남을 용서하고 사랑하며 복음을 전하여, 많은 사람을 구원의 길로 이끌기 위함인 것이다. 자신을 반대하는 자들을 참지 못하고 미워하며 같이 다툰다면, 그를 통한 복음 전파는 이루어질 수 없기 때문이다.

그래서 그는 모든 것을 참았다. 그러나 인간의 힘으로는 한계가 있기에 성령께 매달렸다. 성령의 지혜와 인내심, 그리고 능력을 부어 달라고 방언으로 기도한 것이다. 복음 전파를 끝까지 완수하도록 기도하였고, 자기 자신이 믿음의 반석 위에 견고히 서서 복음을 전파할 수 있도록 기도하였다. 이때는 남을 위해 설교하는 시간이 아니라, 자기 자신을 바로 세우는 시간이었던 것이다.

우리도 바울처럼 두 가지 형태의 기도를 해야 한다. 때로는 자기 영혼을 바로 세우는 방언 기도를 해야 하고, 때로는 모두가 알아듣는 말로 기도하여 모든 사람이 마음의 열매를 맺도록 해야 한다. 이 두 가지 기도는 모든 그리스도인에게 꼭 필요하다.

남을 가르치는 시간에 일만 마디 방언을 말하여 아무도 알아듣지 못하게 하는 것보다, 모두가 알아듣는 말로 몇 마디 기도하는 것이 훨씬 유익하다. 상황에 맞게 기도하고 복음을 전해야 하는 것이지, 무조건 어느 한쪽 방식만 더 옳다고 주장하는 말씀이 아닌 것이다.

1 Corinthians 14:14–20 (NIV)

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. Otherwise when you are praising God in the spirit, how can someone else, who now puts themselves among those who do not understand, say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

If we pray only in tongues, our minds will remain unfruitful. Therefore, we must pray both in tongues and with our understanding. When praying in tongues, we may not clearly understand the meaning ourselves, but when praying with our understanding, we know clearly what we are praying.

The Apostle Paul spoke in tongues more than anyone else. He did so to build himself up spiritually. He needed spiritual strength so that, even in difficult circumstances, he could forgive and love others, preach the Gospel, and lead many people onto the path of salvation.

If he had been unable to endure those who opposed him, had hated them, and had quarreled with them, the Gospel could not have spread through his ministry.Therefore, Paul endured all things. However, because human strength has its limits, he depended upon the Holy Spirit.

He prayed in tongues, asking the Holy Spirit to pour out wisdom, patience, and power upon him. He prayed that he might fulfill his mission of preaching the Gospel faithfully to the very end. He also prayed that he himself would stand firmly upon the rock of faith and continue proclaiming the Gospel. This was not a time to preach to others, but a time to strengthen and establish himself spiritually.

Like Paul, we must also practice these two forms of prayer. At times, we need to pray in tongues in order to strengthen our own souls. At other times, we must pray with words that everyone can understand so that all may understand and bear fruit in their hearts and minds. Both forms of prayer are essential for every Christian.

When teaching others, it is far more beneficial to pray or speak a few words that everyone can understand than to speak ten thousand words in tongues that no one can understand. We must pray and preach the Gospel in a way that is appropriate to each situation.

This passage does not teach that only one form of prayer is always right or that one way is unconditionally superior to the other.
