四十日特別活動は、一九五七年七月二十日から始まりました。韓国統一教会の全食口が、七月一日から一週間断食を始めました。一週間断食をしながら出発したのです。お父様もその時に、断食をしながら四十日特別活動を宣言しました。統一教会では、常に七月二十日を中心として、夏季四十日伝道活動をします。この時期は、学校も夏休みに入る最も暑い時です。一番暑い時に、み旨のために汗を流しながら努力しなければなりません。それが蕩減条件を立てる上で有用なのです。大きな蕩減条件になります。ですから、その期間を選んだのです。最も大変な時です。
伝道に出る時は、お金を持たずに行きます。お金があれば、すべて一カ所に集め、ほかの人に分け与えてから行くのです。自分の生活は現地に行って解決するのです。血の汗を流して労働をしたり、何かをしたりして生活しながら、その地方の人々を助ける運動をしなければなりません。それが訓練です。(167-240)

40일 특별활동은 1957년 7월 20일부터 시작했습니다. 한국 통일교회 전 식구가 7월 1일부터 일주일 금식을 시작했습니다. 일주일 금식을 하면서 출발한 것입니다. 아버님도 그때 금식을 하면서 40일 특별활동을 선언했습니다. 통일교회에서는 언제나 7월 20일을 중심삼고 하계 40일 전도활동을 합니다. 이때는 학교도 방학을 하는 제일 더운 때입니다. 제일 더운 때에 뜻을 위해 땀을 흘리면서 노력해야 됩니다. 그것이 탕감조건을 세우는 데 유용합니다. 탕감조건이 크게 세워진다는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 그 기간을 택한 것입니다. 제일 어려운 때입니다. 전도하러 나갈 때에는 돈을 못 가지고 갑니다. 돈이 있으면 전부 한 곳에 모여서 다른 사람에게 나누어 주고 갑니다. 자기 생활은 현지에 가서 해결하는 것입니다. 피땀을 흘리며 노동을 하든가 뭘 하든가 생활을 하면서 그 지방 사람들을 도와주는 운동을 해야 됩니다. 그것이 훈련입니다. A special 40-day outreach campaign started on July 20, 1957. All the members in Korea began a seven-day fast on July 1. Through fasting they made a new start. I fasted with them and announced this special 40-day campaign.
In the Unification Church, we hold a 40-day witnessing campaign starting on July 20 every year. This is during the school break, the hottest time of the year. We need to sweat and work intensely for the providence during the hottest period of the year. This is a good way to pay indemnity. Indemnity conditions have to be set strategically. That was why I chose this most difficult time for witnessing.
When you go out witnessing, you are not to carry any money with you. If you have money, you should give it away. You have to go to your assigned area and meet your expenses by doing manual labor or whatever jobs you can do that will help the people in your area. By shedding your blood and sweat in activities to help the people, you are undergoing training. (167-240)

1957年7月20日、最初の夏季40日伝道が実施された。真のお父様は伝道活動が始まる前に自ら断食され、全食ロたちに7日絶食を命じられた。これは統一教会の断食伝統の起源となった。

1957년 7월 20일, 최초의 하계 40일 전도가 실시됐다. 참아버님께서는 전도 활동이 시작되기전 몸소 금식을 하시며 전식구들에게 7일 금식을 명하셨다. 이것은 통일교회 금식전통의 기원이 됐다.

On July 20, 1957, the first 40-days witnessing was started. For this, True Father fasted and directed the members the 7-days fasting. This is the first attempt of fasting in the Unification Church.

以前までは状況に応じて非組織的、非計画的、小規模で伝道をしていましたが、1957年を契機として組織的かつ大規模な伝道活動を始めた。全国70の主要都市の120カ所にそれぞれ2人ずつペアを組み、計240名が派遣され、伝道地は本人の志願と協会本部の調整で決定された。

이전까지는 상황에 따라 비조직적, 비계획적, 소규모로 전도를 했지만, 1957년을 계기로 조직적이고 대규모로 전도활동을 시작했다. 전국 70개 주요도시의 120곳에 각각 2명씩 짝을 지어 총 240명이 파송되었으며 전도지는 본인의 자원과 협회본부의 조정으로 결정됐다.

Before 1957, witnessing was unstructured, unplanned, and small-scale. However, from 1957, it was changed into systematic and large-scale witnessing. Each pair groups were sent to 120 locations in the 70 main cities. The total number of the members who were sent was 240 people and the witnessing location was decided by the headquarter.

割り当てられた都市の他に決まった居場所もなく、靴の中には着替え1着だけの開拓の道であった。出発する者たちの心には未知なる未来に対する不安と、好奇心、冒険心、漠然とした期待感など万感の思いが交差したことであろう。

배정받은 도시 외에 정해진 거처도 없었고 배낭 안에는 여벌 옷 달랑 한벌 뿐인개척의 발길이었다. 떠나는 이들의 마음에는 미지의 앞길에 대한 막막함과 함께 호기심, 모험심, 막연한 기대감 등 만감이 교차했으리라!

When the members were assigned to the witnessing locations, they did not have anything, just have one set of changing clothes in their backpack. The members were afraid of a new environment, but at the same time, they were excited about it.

伝道活動を終えて帰ってきて、真のお父様をお迎えし、本部教会で報告会を開いた時には、ほとんどの人々は伝道地で鞭打たれ、追い出され、飢えながら、苦労した話をしたと言う。

전도활동을 마치고 돌아와 참아버님을 모시고 본부교회에서 보고회를 가졌을 때, 대부분 매 맞고 쫓겨나고 굶고 고생한 이야기를 했다고 한다.

Arter finishing the witnessing, the members reported their witnessing life. Most of the members had a difficult time during the witnessing. They did not eat enough for several weeks or they were attached.

最初の夏季40日伝道を通じて、韓国全土にはたくさんの地方教会が新たに誕生した。これにより、40日夏季伝道活動は、統一教会の伝統として定着するようになった。

최초의 하계 40일 전도를 통해 전국에는 여러 지방교회가 새로이 탄생했다. 이로써 40일 하계 전도활동은 통일교회의 전통으로 자리잡게 되었다.

Now, there are many local churches. This is because of a 40-days witnessing campaign. This has been settles as the tradition of the first witnessing history.
