인사말(Greeting)

1-2 하나님의 뜻으로 예수 그리스도(Jesus Christ)의 사도인 바울(Paul)과 형제 디모데(Timothy)는 고린도(Corinth)에 있는 하나님의 교회와 아가야(Achaia) 전 지역에 있는 모든 성도에게 편지합니다.

2 하나님 우리 아버지(God our Father)와 주 예수 그리스도(the Lord Jesus Christ)께서 여러분에게 은혜(Grace)와 평화(peace)를 베푸시기를 간절히 바랍니다.

고난 속의 위로(Comfort in Suffering)

3 우리 주 예수 그리스도(our Lord Jesus Christ)의 하나님 아버지, 곧 자비의 아버지(the Father of mercies)시며 모든 위로의 하나님(God of all comfort)을 찬양합니다. 4 하나님께서는 우리가 겪는 모든 환난 (all our tribulation) 중에서 우리를 위로해 주셨고, 우리 또한 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 그 위안으로 어려움에 있는 사람들을 위로할 수 있게 되었습니다. 5 그리스도의 고난(the sufferings of Christ)이 우리에게 넘치듯, 우리의 위로(our consolation)도 그리스도(Christ)를 통해 풍성하게 주어지기 때문입니다. 6 우리가 환난을 겪는다면 그것은 여러분의 위로와 구원(your consolation and salvation)을 위함이며, 여러분의 위로와 구원은 우리 역시 겪는 동일한 고난(the same suffering)을 우리가 견뎌 나가는 데 효과가 있습니다. 우리가 위안받는다면, 이 또한 여러분의 위로와 구원(your consolation and salvation)을 위함입니다. 7 여러분에 대한 우리의 소망은 굳건합니다. 여러분이 고난(the sufferings)에 함께 참여하는 것처럼 위로(the consolation)에도 함께 참여할 것인 것을 우리는 확신하기 때문입니다.

8 형제 여러분, 아시아(Asia)에서 우리에게 닥친 고난(our trouble)에 대해 여러분이 모르기를 원하지 않습니다. 우리는 감당할 수 없을 정도로 심한 압박을 받아 삶의 희망조차 끊어졌습니다(that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life). 9 참으로 우리는 우리 안에 사형 선고를 받은 줄로 여겼습니다(Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves). 이는 우리 자신을 신뢰하는 것이 아니라 죽은 자를 다시 살리시는 하나님을 신뢰하게 하려는 것이었습니다(that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead). 10 그분께서 이처럼 위중한 죽음에서 우리를 건지셨고, 또 건지시고 있습니다. 우리는 그분께서 앞으로도 우리를 건지실 것을 믿습니다. 11 여러분도 우리를 위해 함께 기도함으로써 우리를 도와주십시오(you also helping together in prayer for us). 많은 사람을 통해 우리에게 주어진 선물로 우리를 대신하여 많은 사람이 감사를 드리도록 말입니다(that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many).

바울의 진실성(Paul’s Sincerity)

12 왜냐하면 우리의 자랑은 이것이기 때문입니다. 우리 양심의 증거(the testimony of our conscience), 곧 이 세상에서 단순함(simplicity)과 경건한 진실함(godly sincerity)으로 육신의 지혜(fleshly wisdom)가 아닌 하나님의 은혜(the grace of God)로 여러분에 넘치도록 행한 우리 양심의 증거(the testimony of our conscience)가 그것입니다. 13-14 여러분이 읽거나 이해할 수 있는 것을 넘어서서 다른 것을 우리는 여러분에게 쓰지 않기 때문입니다. 여러분 역시 우리를 부분적으로 이해한 것처럼, 주 예수의 날(the day of the Lord Jesus)에 여러분이 우리의 자랑인 것처럼 우리도 여러분의 자랑이라는 걸 여러분이 끝까지 이해해 주리라 이제 우리는 믿습니다(Now I trust you will understand, even to the end (as also you have understood us in part), that we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus).

교회를 아낌(Sparing the Church)

15 이러한 확신으로 여러분이 두 번째 은혜(a second benefit)를 받을 수 있도록 전에 여러분에게 가고자 했습니다. 16 여러분을 거쳐 마케도니아(Macedonia)로 갔다가, 마케도니아(Macedonia)에서 다시 여러분에게 돌아와 유대(Judea)로 가는 길에 여러분의 도움을 받으려고 했습니다. 17 내가 이 계획을 세울 때 경솔하게 하였습니까? 아니면 내가 계획한 것이 육신(the flesh)에 따른 것이어서 내게 예(Yes) 예(Yes)와 아니요(No) 아니요(No)가 섞여 있는 겁니까? 18 하나님은 신실하시니, 여러분에게 한 우리의 말은 예(Yes) 아니요(No)가 아니었습니다. 19 우리 곧 나와 실루아노(Silvanus)와 디모데(Timothy)를 통해 여러분에게 전파된 하나님 아들 예수 그리스도(the Son of God, Jesus Christ)는 예(Yes) 아니요(No)가 아니었고, 그분 안에는 예(Yes)만 있었습니다. 20 그분 안에 있는 하나님의 모든 약속(all the promises of God in Him)은 예(Yes)이고, 그분 안에서 우리를 통해 진실로 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다(For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us). 21 그리스도 안에 여러분과 함께 우리를 굳게 세우시고 우리에게 기름 부으신 분은 하나님이십니다(Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God). 22 그분께서는 또한 우리를 인증하시고(sealed) 그 보증(a guarantee)으로 우리 마음에 성령(the Spirit)을 주셨습니다(who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee).

23 나는 여러분을 아끼는 마음으로 고린도(Corinth)에 다시 가지 않았다는 것을 내 영혼을 걸고 하나님 을 증인으로 부릅니다. 24 우리는 여러분의 믿음을 주관하려는 것이 아니라, 여러분의 기쁨을 위해 함께 일하는 동역자입니다(Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy). 믿음으로 여러분이 서 있기 때문입니다.

고린도후서 2장

1 나는 다시는 슬픔에 빠져 여러분에게 가지 않기로 마음속으로 굳게 다짐했습니다. 2 내가 여러분을 슬프게 한다면, 나로 인해 슬픔을 느낀 그 사람 외에 누가 나를 기쁘게 해줄 수 있겠습니까?

범죄자를 용서함(Forgive the Offender)

3 내가 바로 이런 편지(this very thing)를 여러분에게 쓴 것은, 내가 갔을 때 나를 기쁘게 해주어야 할 사람들로부터 오히려 슬픔을 느끼지 않기 위함이었습니다. 나는 여러분 모두를 믿으며, 나의 기쁨이 곧 여러분 모두의 기쁨이라고 확신합니다. 4 적지 않은 어려움(affliction)과 마음의 고통(anguish of heart) 가운데 많은 눈물을 흘리며 여러분에게 편지를 쓴 것은 여러분을 슬프게 하려는 것이 아니라 여러분에 대한 나의 넘치는 사랑을 알려드리고 싶었기 때문입니다.

5 그러나 혹시라도 어느 사람이 근심을 끼쳤다면, 그는 내가 아니라 여러분 모두를 어느 정도 근심하게 한 것입니다. 너무 심하게는 아니라도 말입니다. 6 많은 사람이 내린 이 징계(This punishment)는 그런 사람(such a man)에게는 충분하다고 생각합니다. 7 그러므로 오히려 여러분은 그를 너그럽게 용서하고 위로해야 합니다. 그 사람이 너무 깊은 슬픔에 빠지지 않도록 말입니다. 8 그러므로 나는 그 사람에 대한 여러분의 사랑을 다시 한번 확인해 줄 것을 부탁드립니다. 9 내가 편지를 쓴 것은 여러분이 모든 일에 순종하는지 알아보려는 것이었습니다. 10 여러분이 누구든지 용서하면 나 또한 용서합니다. 내가 만일 용서한 일이 있다면, 그리스도(Christ) 앞에서 여러분을 위해 그 사람을 용서하기 때문입니다. 11 우리가 사탄(Satan)의 계략(his devices)을 모르는 것이 아니므로, 사탄(Satan) 우리를 이용하지 못하도록 해야 합니다.

그리스도 안에서의 승리(Triumph in Christ)

12-13 후에 내가 그리스도의 복음(Christ’s gospel)을 전하기 위해 드로아(Troas)에 이르렀을 때, 주께서 나에게 복음을 전할 문을 열어 주셨지만, 나의 형제 디도(Titus)를 만나지 못했으므로 마음이 편안하지 못했습니다. 그래서 나는 그들과 작별하고 마케도니아(Macedonia)로 떠났습니다.

고린도후서 3장

여러분은 그리스도의 서신(You are an Crist's Epistle)

1 우리가 다시 우리 자신을 칭찬하기 시작하는 것 같습니까? 아니면 다른 사람들처럼 우리에게 여러분에게 보내는 추천서나 여러분으로부터 받는 추천서가 필요한 것 같습니까? 2 여러분이야말로 우리의 편지(our epistle)로서, 우리 마음(our hearts)에 기록되어 있고 모든 사람이 알 수 있고 읽을 수 있습니다(You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men). 3 분명히 여러분은 그리스도의 편지(an epistle of Christ)로서, 우리를 통해 섬겨진 것이고, 잉크가 아닌 살아 계신 하나님의 영(the Spirit of the living God)으로 쓰인 것이며, 돌판(tablets of stone)이 아닌 육체의 판(tablets of flesh), 곧 마음의 판(tablets of the heart)에 쓰인 것입니다.

문자가 아닌 영(The Spirit, Not the Letter)

4 우리는 그리스도를 통해(through Christ) 하나님을 향한(toward God) 신뢰(trust)를 지니고 있습니다. 5 우리가 스스로 무엇인가를 생각해 낼 만큼 충분하다고 여기는 것은 아닙니다. 오히려 우리의 모든 능력(sufficiency)은 하나님에게서 옵니다(Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God). 6 하나님께서는 낡은 율법 조문(the letter)이 아니라 생명을 주는 영(the Spirit)으로 된 새 언약의 일꾼(ministers of the new covenant)으로 우리를 세우셨습니다. 율법 조문은 죽이지만, 영은 생명을 주기 때문입니다(who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life).

새 언약의 영광(Glory of the New Covenant)

7 만일 돌에 새겨진 죽음의 직분(율법, the ministry of death)이 영광스럽고, 사라져 갈 모세(Moses) 얼굴의 영광으로 이스라엘 자손(the children of Israel)들이 그 얼굴을 제대로 쳐다볼 수 없다면, 8 영의 직분(the ministry of the Spirit)은 얼마나 더 영광스럽겠습니까? 9 만일 정죄의 직분(the ministry of condemnation)에도 영광이 있었다면, 의의 직분(the ministry of righteousness)은 그 영광이 훨씬 더 클 것이기 때문입니다. 10 훨씬 뛰어난 이 영광으로 이전 영광은 영광이 전혀 없기 때문입니다(For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels). 11 사라질 것이 영광스러웠다면, 남아 있는 것은 훨씬 더 영광스럽기 때문입니다(For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious).

12-13 그러므로 사라질 것의 종말에서 이스라엘 자손들이 바로 보지 못하게 하려고 모세가 자기 얼굴에 수건(a veil)을 덮은 것과는 달리, 우리는 그런 소망(such hope)을 지니고 있기에 매우 담대하게 말합니다. 14 그러나 이스라엘 자손들의 마음은 가려졌습니다(But their minds were blinded). 바로 오늘까지도(until this day) 구약 성경(the Old Testament)을 읽을 때 바로 그 수건(the same veil)이 벗겨지지 않고 남아 있으며, 그리스도(Christ) 안에서 그 수건(the veil)이 제거되기 때문입니다. 15 심지어 오늘까지도(even to this day) 모세(Moses)를 읽을 때 수건(a veil)이 그들의 마음(their heart)에 덮여 있습니다. 16 그러나 누구든지 주께로 돌이키면 그 수건(the veil)이 벗겨집니다. 17 주는 영(the Spirit)이시니, 주의 영(the Spirit of the Lord)이 있는 곳에 자유(liberty)가 있습니다(Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty). 18 모두 수건을 벗은 얼굴(unveiled face)로 거울을 보는 듯이 우리 모두 주의 영광(the glory of the Lord)을 보매, 그와 같은 형상(the same image)으로 변화되어 영광에서 영광에 이르니, 곧 주의 영(the Spirit of the Lord)으로 말미암은 것입니다(But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord).

고린도후서 4장

그리스도 복음의 빛(The Light of Christ’s Gospel)

1 그러므로 긍휼(mercy)을 받아 이 사역(this ministry)을 맡았으니 우리는 낙심하지 않습니다. 2 우리는 간교함(craftiness)으로 행하거나 하나님의 말씀(the word of God)을 왜곡하여 다루지 않음으로써 부끄러운 숨겨진 것들(the hidden things of shame)을 버리고, 진리를 분명히 드러냄(manifestation of the truth)으로 하나님께서 보시는 앞에서 모든 사람의 양심(every man’s conscience)에 우리 자신을 드러냅니다. 3 만일 우리의 복음(our gospel)이 가려져 있다면, 멸망하는 자들에게 가려진 것입니다(is veiled to those who are perishing). 4 하나님 형상(the image of God)이신 그리스도 영광의 복음 빛(the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ)이 그들에게 비치지 못하도록 이 시대의 신(the god of this age)이 믿지 않는 자들의 마음을 어둡게 한 것입니다. 5 우리는 우리 자신이 아닌 주 예수 그리스도(Christ Jesus the Lord)를 전파하며, 예수님을 위해 우리 자신을 여러분의 종(your bondservants)으로 소개합니다. 6 어둠에서 빛(light)을 비추라고 말씀하신 분이 하나님이시고, 예수 그리스도(Jesus Christ)의 모습 안에서 하나님 영광을 아는 빛(the light of the knowledge of the glory of God)을 우리 마음에 비추셨습니다.

넘어뜨려도 정복되지 않음(Cast Down but Unconquered)

7 우리는 이 귀한 보물(this treasure)을 깨지기 쉬운 질그릇(earthen vessels)에 담고 있습니다. 이 놀라운 능력(the excellence of the power)은 우리에게서 나온 것이 아니라 하나님에게서 비롯된 것입니다. 8 우리는 사방으로 어려움(hard-pressed)을 겪지만 완전히 짓눌리지 않으며, 당황(perplexed)할 때도 있지만 절망하지 않습니다. 9 박해(persecuted)를 받지만 결코 버림받지 않으며, 넘어뜨림(struck down)을 당하지만 멸망하지 않습니다. 10 우리는 언제나 우리 몸에 주 예수의 죽으심(the dying of the Lord Jesus)을 기억하며, 예수의 생명(the life of Jesus) 역시 우리 몸을 통해 나타나는 것입니다. 11 살아 있는 우리는 예수님(Jesus)을 위하여 끊임없이 죽음(death)의 위협에 넘겨지고, 이는 예수의 생명(the life of Jesus)이 우리의 연약한 육체(our mortal flesh)를 통해서도 드러나게 하려는 것입니다. 12 그러므로 사망(death)은 우리(us) 안에서 역사하고 생명(life)은 여러분(you) 안에서 역사하는 것입니다.

보이지 않는 것을 봄(Seeing the Invisible)

16 그러므로 우리는 낙심하지 않습니다. 우리의 겉사람(our outward man)은 점점 쇠약해지지만, 우리의 속사람(the inward man)은 날마다 새로워지고 있습니다(Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day). 17 우리가 잠시 겪는 가벼운 고난(our light affliction)은 장차 우리에게 영원하고 비교할 수 없이 큰 영광(a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory)을 가져다줄 것입니다. 18 우리가 눈에 보이는 것(the things which are seen)이 아니라 눈에 보이지 않는 것(the things which are not seen)을 바라보기 때문입니다. 보이는 것은 잠시뿐이지만, 보이지 않는 것은 영원합니다(For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal).

고린도후서 5장

부활의 확신(Assurance of the Resurrection)

1 만일 땅에 있는 우리 집, 곧 이 임시 거처(our earthly house, this tent)가 무너지면, 하나님께서 지으신 집, 곧 손으로 만들지 않은 영원한 집(a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens)이 하늘에 있다는 것을 우리는 압니다. 2 참으로 우리는 이 임시거처에서 신음하며, 하늘로부터 오는 우리의 집(our habitation which is from heaven)으로 덧입기를 간절히 바랍니다. 3 만일 우리가 그 집으로 덧입으면 벌거벗은 자로 드러나지 않을 것입니다. 4 이 임시거처에 있는 우리가 짐을 지고 신음하는 것은, 이 거처를 벗어버리기를 원해서가 아니라 영원한 집으로 덧입기를 원하기 때문입니다. 그리하여 죽을 수밖에 없는 우리(that mortality)가 영원한 생명에 완전히 삼켜지게 하려는 것입니다(may be swallowed up by life). 5 바로 이 일을 위해 우리를 준비시키신 분은 하나님(God)이시며, 그 보증으로 우리에게 성령(the Spirit)을 선물로 주셨습니다.

6 그러므로 우리는 항상 담대합니다(we are always confident). 우리가 이 몸 안에 머무는 동안에는 주(the Lord)로부터 떠나 있다는 것을 압니다(while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord). 7 우리는 눈에 보이는 것이 아니라 믿음(faith)으로 살아가기 때문입니다(For we walk by faith, not by sight). 8 우리는 확신합니다(we are confident). 오히려 이 몸에서 떠나 주(the Lord)와 함께 있는 것을 더 기뻐합니다(rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord).

그리스도의 심판대(The Judgment Seat of Christ)

9 그러므로 우리는 이 몸 안에 머물든지 떠나든지, 오직 그분(Him)을 기쁘시게 하는 것을 가장 중요하게 생각합니다. 10 이는 우리 모두가 반드시 그리스도의 심판대(the judgment seat of Christ) 앞에 서서, 각 사람이 선하든 악하든 이 몸으로 행한 모든 일에 따라 보응을 받게 하려는 것입니다(For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad). 11 그러므로 우리는 주님의 엄중하심(the terror of the Lord)을 알기에 사람들을 권면하고 설득합니다. 하나님께서는 우리를 환히 알고 계시며, 여러분의 양심(your consciences) 또한 우리를 잘 알고 있을 것이라고 믿습니다.

하나님과 화목함(Be Reconciled to God)

12 우리는 다시 여러분에게 우리 자신을 내세우는 것이 아니라, 마음(heart)이 아닌 겉모습(appearance)으로 자랑하는 사람들에게 맞설 수 있는 근거를 여러분에게 드려 우리를 자랑하게 하려는 것입니다(we give you opportunity to boast on our behalf). 13 우리가 혹시 이해하기 어려운 행동을 했다면 그것은 하나님을 위한 것이고, 정신이 온전하다면 여러분을 위한 것입니다(For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you). 14 그리스도의 사랑(the love of Christ)이 우리를 강력하게 이끌고 있습니다(compels us). 우리가 이렇게 생각하기 때문입니다. 한 분(One)이 모든 사람을 대신하여 돌아가셨다면, 모든 사람이 죽은 것과 같습니다(if One died for all, then all died). 15 그분(He)이 모든 사람을 대신하여 돌아가신 이유는, 살아 있는 사람들이 더 이상 자신을 위해 살지 않고, 자신들을 위해 죽었다가 다시 살아나신 그분(Him)을 위해 살게 하려는 것입니다(that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again).

16 그러므로 이제부터 우리는 아무도 겉으로 보이는 모습(the flesh)으로 판단하지 않습니다. 비록 우리가 과거에는 겉모습(the flesh)으로 그리스도(Christ)를 알았다고 할지라도, 이제는 그분을 그렇게 알지 않습니다(Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer). 17 그런즉 누구든지 그리스도(Christ) 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물(a new creation)입니다. 이전의 모든 것은 지나가고, 보십시오, 모든 것이 새롭게 되었습니다(old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new). 18 이 모든 것은 하나님에게서 비롯되었으며, 그분께서 예수 그리스도(Jesus Christ)를 통해 우리를 자신과 화목하게 하시고, 화목하게 하는 직분(the ministry of reconciliation)을 우리에게 맡기셨습니다. 19 이는 하나님께서 그리스도(Christ) 안에 계셔서 세상을 당신과 화목하게 하시며, 사람들의 잘못(their trespasses)을 그들에게 묻지 않으시고, 화목하게 하는 말씀(the word of reconciliation)을 우리에게 맡기신 것입니다(God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them).

20 그러므로 하나님(God)께서 우리를 통해 간절히 부탁하시는 것처럼 우리는 그리스도의 사절들(ambassadors for Christ)입니다. 우리가 그리스도(Christ)를 대신하여 여러분에게 간청합니다. 하나님과 화목하세요(be reconciled to God). 21 죄를 전혀 알지 못하는 그분(Him)을 하나님께서 우리를 위해 죄 있는 자로 삼으신 것은 그분(Him) 안에서 우리가 하나님의 의(the righteousness of God)가 되게 하려는 것입니다.

고린도후서 6장

사역의 표적(Marks of the Ministry)

1 하나님(Him)과 함께 일하는 동역자(workers together with Him)로서 우리는 여러분에게 간곡히 부탁드립니다. 하나님의 은혜(the grace of God)를 헛되이 받지 마십시오(not to receive the grace of God in vain). 2 그분(He)께서 말씀하시기를,

“받아들여질 만한 때에 내가 너희의 간구를 들었고,

구원의 날에 너희를 도왔노라.” / 이사야 49:8

“In an acceptable time I have heard you,

And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” / Isaiah 49:8

보십시오, 지금이 은혜가 베풀어지는 때입니다(now is the accepted time). 보십시오, 지금이 구원의 날입니다(now is the day of salvation). 3 우리는 어떤 일에서도 다른 사람에게 걸림돌이 되지 않도록 주의하여 우리 사역(our ministry)이 비난받지 않게 합니다(We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed). 4-10 큰 인내(much patience), 환난(tribulations), 궁핍(needs), 고난(distresses), 매 맞음(stripes), 갇힘(imprisonments), 혼란(tumults), 수고(labors), 밤샘(sleeplessness), 금식(fastings), 순결(purity), 지식(knowledge), 오래 참음(long-suffering), 친절(kindness), 성령(the Holy Spirit), 진실한 사랑(sincere love), 진리의 말씀(the word of truth), 하나님의 능력(the power of God), 오른손과 왼손에 있는 의의 갑옷(the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left), 영광(honor), 불명예(dishonor), 악평(evil report), 좋은 평판(good report), 속이는 자 같으나 참됨(as deceivers, and yet true), 알려지지 않은 자 같으나 잘 알려짐(as unknown, and yet well known), 죽어가는 자 같으나, 보십시오, 살아 있음(as dying, and behold we live), 징계를 받는 자 같으나 죽임을 당하지 않음(as chastened, and yet not killed) 슬퍼하는 자 같으나 항상 기뻐함(as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing), 가난한 자 같으나 많은 사람을 부유하게 함(as poor, yet making many rich), 아무것도 없는 자 같으나 모든 걸 가짐(as having nothing, and yet possessing all things). 그러나 이 모든 일에서(in all things) 우리 자신을 하나님의 사역자(ministers of God)로 소개합니다:

거룩함(Be Holy)

11 고린도 교인 여러분(O Corinthians)! 우리는 여러분에게 솔직하게 마음을 열어 말씀드렸습니다(we have spoken openly to you). 우리의 마음(our heart)은 넓게 열려 있습니다(our heart is wide open). 12 여러분이 우리 안에서 마음이 좁아진 것이 아니라, 여러분 자신의 강하고 깊은 애정(your own affections) 때문에 마음이 닫힌 것입니다. 13 이제 같은 보답으로, 내가 자녀에게 말하듯이 말합니다, 여러분도 마음을 여세요(Now in return for the same (I speak as to children), you also be open).

14 믿지 않는 사람들과 함께 부당하게 멍에를 메지 마십시오(Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers). 의(righteousness)와 불법(lawlessness)이 어떻게 함께할 수 있습니까(For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness)? 빛(light)과 어둠(darkness)이 어떻게 사귈 수 있습니까(And what communion has light with darkness)? 15 그리스도(Christ)와 벨리알(Belial)이 어떻게 조화(accord)를 이룰 수 있습니까? 혹은 믿는 사람(a believer)과 믿지 않는 사람(an unbeliever)이 무슨 관계가 있겠습니까(Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever)? 16 하나님의 성전(the temple of God)과 우상(idols)이 어떻게 조화를 이루겠습니까(And what agreement has the temple of God with idols)? 여러분은 살아 계신 하나님(the living God)의 성전(the temple)이기 때문입니다. 하나님(God)께서 말씀하신바

“내가 그들 안에 거하며

그들 가운데로 거닐 것이니,

나는 그들의 하나님이 되고,

그들은 내 백성이 될 것이라.” / 레위기 26:12, 에스겔 37:27

“I will dwell in them

And walk among them.

I will be their God,

And they shall be My people.” / Leviticus 26:12, Ezekiel 37:27)

17 그러므로

“그들 가운데서 나와

따로 떨어지거라, 주께서 말씀하시노라.

부정한 것을 만지지 말거라,

“Come out from among them

And be separate, says the Lord.

고린도후서 7장

1 그러므로 사랑하는 여러분, 이러한 약속(these promises)을 받았으니, 육체와 영의 온갖 더러움(all filthiness of the flesh and spirit)에서 우리 자신을 깨끗하게 하여 하나님을 경외하는 마음(the fear of God)으로 거룩함을 온전히 이루어 갑시다(perfecting holiness).

고린도 교인들의 회개(The Corinthians’ Repentance)

2 여러분의 마음(your hearts)을 우리에게 열어 주세요(Open your hearts to us). 우리는 아무에게도 잘못한 일이 없고, 아무도 타락시킨 일이 없고, 아무에게서도 부당하게 빼앗은 일이 없습니다. 3 내가 여러분을 비난하려고(condemn) 이걸 말하는 게 아닙니다. 앞서 말했듯이, 여러분이 우리 마음(our hearts) 안에 있어 함께 죽고 함께 살 것이라는 점을 알고 있습니다. 4 나는 여러분에게 확신을 두고 많은 말씀을 드리고, 여러분을 매우 자랑스럽게 생각합니다(Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my boasting on your behalf.). 나는 위로로 가득 차 있으며, 우리가 겪는 모든 어려움 속에서도 기쁨이 넘칩니다(I am filled with comfort. 8 내가 편지로 여러분을 슬프게 했더라도, 이제는 후회하지 않습니다. 잠시 후회하기는 했지만요. 그 편지가 잠시 여러분을 슬프게 했다는 것을 압니다. 9 지금 내가 기뻐하는 것은 여러분이 슬퍼했기 때문이 아니라, 여러분의 슬픔이 회개(repentance)에 이르게 되었기 때문입니다. 여러분이 하나님의 뜻대로 슬퍼했으므로, 우리에게서 아무런 손해를 당하지 않았습니다(that you might suffer loss from us in nothing). 10 하나님의 뜻대로 하는 슬픔(godly sorrow)은 후회할 것 없는 구원(salvation)에 이르는 회개(repentance)를 이루고, 세상의 슬픔(the sorrow of the world)은 죽음(death)을 이룹니다. 11 여러분이 하나님의 뜻대로 슬퍼한 결과, 여러분 가운데 얼마나 간절함(diligence)이 생겼는지, 얼마나 여러분 자신의 결백을 밝히려는 노력(clearing of yourselves)이 생겼는지, 얼마나 분개함(indignation)이 생겼는지, 얼마나 두려움(fear)이 생겼는지, 얼마나 간절한 열망(vehement desire)이 생겼는지, 얼마나 열성(zeal)이 생겼는지, 얼마나 잘못을 바로잡으려는 노력(vindication)이 생겼는지 보세요! 여러분은 이 일에서 모든 면으로 결백함을 증명했습니다(In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter). 12 그러므로 내가 여러분에게 편지를 쓴 것은 잘못을 저지른 사람 때문만도 아니고, 잘못을 당한 사람 때문만도 아니고, 하나님 앞에서 여러분을 향한 우리의 깊은 관심(our care for you)이 여러분에게 분명하게 드러나게 하려는 것이었습니다.

디도의 기쁨(The Joy of Titus)

13 그러므로 우리는 여러분의 위로 덕분에, 위안을 받았습니다(we have been comforted in your comfort). 그리고 디도의 기쁨(joy of Titus)으로 인해 우리는 더욱 크게 기뻐했습니다. 이는 그의 마음(his spirit)이 여러분 모두로 인해 활력을 되찾았기 때문입니다(because his spirit has been refreshed by you all). 14 내가 그에게 여러분을 칭찬한 것이 있다면 부끄럽지 않습니다. 우리가 여러분에게 모든 것을 진실하게 말한 것처럼, 디도(Titus)에게 한 우리의 자랑도 사실로 드러났습니다. 15 여러분 모두의 순종(obedience)과 여러분이 얼마나 두려움과 떨림의 마음(fear and trembling)으로 그를 영접했는지 그가 기억할 때, 여러분을 향한 그의 애정이 더욱 깊어집니다(his affections are greater for you). 16 그러므로 나는 모든 일에서 여러분에게 신뢰할 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다(I rejoice that I have confidence in you in everything).

고린도후서 8장

아낌없이 줌(Excel in Giving)

1 형제 여러분, 마케도니아 교회들(the churches of Macedonia)에게 베푸신 하나님의 은혜(the grace of God)를 여러분에게 알려드립니다. 2 극심한 고난의 시련(a great trial of affliction) 가운데서도 그들의 넘치는 기쁨(abundance of their joy)과 극심한 가난(their deep poverty)이 놀라운 너그러움(riches of their liberality)으로 넘쳐흘렀습니다. 3-4-5 내가 증언하건대, 그들은 힘닿는 대로 아니 그 이상으로 자원하여 간절히 우리에게 간구하며(imploring us with much urgency), 우리가 기대했던 것 이상으로 그들은 먼저 자신들을 주(the Lord)께 드리고, 하나님의 뜻을 따라 우리에게도 헌신했습니다. 6 그러므로 우리는 디도(Titus)에게 그가 이미 시작한 이 은혜의 사역(this grace)을 여러분 가운데서도 잘 마무리하도록 권면했습니다. 7 여러분이 믿음(faith)과 말(speech)과 지식(knowledge)과 모든 열심(all diligence)과 우리에 대한 사랑(your love for us) 등 모든 면에서 풍성한 것처럼, 이 은혜를 베푸는 일(this grace)에서도 풍성해지도록 하십시오.

그리스도 우리의 본(Christ Our Pattern)

8 내가 명령으로 말하는 것이 아닙니다, 다만 다른 사람들의 열심(diligence)을 통해 여러분 사랑의 진실함(the sincerity of your love)을 확인하려는 것입니다. 9 우리 주 예수 그리스도(our Lord Jesus Christ)의 은혜(grace)를 여러분은 잘 알고 있습니다. 그분(He)은 부요하셨지만 여러분을 위해 가난하게 되셨으니, 이는 그분의 가난(His poverty)으로 말미암아 여러분을 부요하게 하시려는 것입니다(that you through His poverty might become rich).

10 이 일에 대해 내가 조언을 드립니다. 일 년 전에 이 일을 시작했을 뿐만 아니라 간절히 원했던 여러분에게 유익이 될 것입니다(It is to your advantage). 11 이제 여러분은 그 일을 마무리해야 합니다. 간절히 원했던 마음이 있었던 것처럼, 여러분이 가진 것을 사용하여 끝까지 완성해야 합니다. 12 만일 먼저 간절히 원하는 마음(a willing mind)이 있다면, 있는 것에 따라 기꺼이 받아들여질 것이고, 없는 것에 따라 책망받지 않을 것입니다.

13 내가 다른 사람들은 편하게 하고 여러분만 어렵게 하려는 것이 아닙니다. 14 오직 균등함(an equality)을 이루려는 것입니다. 지금은 여러분의 풍요(your abundance)가 그들의 부족(their lack)을 채우고, 후에는 그들의 풍요(their abundance)가 여러분의 부족(your lack)을 채워 서로 균등하게 되게 하려는 것입니다(that there may be equality). 15 성경에 기록된 바와 같이 “많이 거둔 사람도 남지 않았고, 적게 거둔 사람도 부족하지 아니하였느니라(출애굽기 16:18, He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack, Exodus 16:18).”

유대 성도들을 위한 모금(Collection for the Judean Saints)

16 여러분을 향한 같은 간절한 마음(the same earnest care for you)을 디도(Titus)의 마음(heart)에 심어 주신 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 17 디도(Titus)는 우리의 권면(the exhortation)을 받아들였을 뿐 아니라, 더욱 열심(more diligent)을 내어 자발적으로 여러분에게 갔습니다(he went to you of his own accord). 18 또한 우리는 그와 함께 복음(the gospel) 안에서 모든 교회들(all the churches)로부터 칭찬을 받는 형제(the brother)를 보냈습니다. 19 그뿐 아니라, 그는 이 은혜의 선물(this gift)을 전달하는 일에 우리와 동행하도록 교회들(the churches)의 선택을 받았습니다. 이 선물은 주(the Lord)께 영광(the glory of the Lord Himself)을 돌리고 여러분의 준비된 마음(your ready mind)을 나타내기 위해 우리가 관리하는 것입니다. 20 우리가 이 풍성한 선물(this lavish gift)을 관리하는 것에 대해 아무도 우리를 비난하지 못하게 하려는 것입니다(avoiding this: that anyone should blame us). 21 우리는 주(the Lord)께서 보시는 앞에서뿐 아니라 사람들 앞에서도 정직하게 이 일을 처리하려고 합니다(providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men).

고린도후서 9장

선물 관리(Administering the Gift)

1 성도들을 위한 섬김(the ministering to the saints)에 관해서는 여러분에게 따로 편지를 쓸 필요가 없다고 생각합니다. 2 왜냐하면 여러분의 기꺼이 하려는 마음(your willingness)을 잘 알고 있기 때문입니다. 나는 이 점을 마케도니아 사람들(the Macedonians)에게 자랑했습니다. 아가야(Achaia)는 이미 일 년 전부터 준비가 되었고 여러분의 뜨거운 열정(your zeal)이 많은 사람에게 귀감이 되고 있다고 말입니다. 3 그런데도 그 형제들(the brethren)을 보낸 것은, 내가 자랑한 대로 여러분이 정말로 준비를 마쳤다는 것을 확인하여, 여러분에 대한 우리의 자랑(our boasting of you)이 헛되지 않게 하려는 것입니다. 4 혹시 마케도니아 사람들(some Macedonians)이 나와 함께 갔을 때 여러분이 아직 준비되지 않은 것을 보게 된다면, 우리가 이토록 확신하며 자랑한 것(this confident boasting) 때문에 우리 자신이 (물론 여러분도!) 부끄러움을 당하지 않기 위함입니다. 5 그러므로 그 형제들(the brethren)에게 미리 가서 여러분을 격려하고 전에 약속했던 여러분의 후한 선물(your generous gift)을 미리 준비하도록 하는 것이 필요하다고 나는 생각했습니다. 여러분의 선물은 마지못해하는 의무감(a grudging obligation)에서가 아니라 너그러운 마음(a matter of generosity)에서 우러나와 준비되어야 합니다.

기꺼이 주는 사람(The Cheerful Giver)

6 그러나 내가 분명히 말씀드립니다. 적게 심는 사람은 적게 거두고, 많이 심는 사람은 많이 거둡니다(He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully). 7 그러므로 각 사람은 마음에 정한 대로, 인색함으로나 억지로 하지 말고 자원하여 내십시오(So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity). 하나님께서는 기쁜 마음으로 드리는 사람을 사랑하시기 때문입니다(for God loves a cheerful giver). 8 하나님께서는 모든 은혜(all grace)를 여러분에게 풍성하게 부어주실 수 있습니다(And God is able to make all grace abound toward you). 그리하여 여러분이 항상 모든 일(all things)에 필요한 모든 것(all sufficiency)을 넉넉히 갖추어 모든 선한 일(every good work)을 넘치게 행할 수 있도록 하시려는 것입니다. 9 성경에 기록된 바와 같습니다.

“그가 널리 베풀었고

그는 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주었으니,

그의 의로움(righteousness)이 영원히 지속되리라.” / 시편 112:9

“He has dispersed abroad,

He has given to the poor;

His righteousness endures forever.” / Psalms 112:9

10 씨 뿌리는 사람에게는 씨앗(seed)을, 먹을 양식으로는 빵(bread)을 주시는 하나님께서 이제 여러분이 심은 씨앗(seed)을 풍성하게 하시고 자라게 하시며 여러분 의의 열매(the fruits of your righteousness)를 더욱 늘려 주시기를 기도합니다. 11 이는 여러분이 모든 너그러움(all liberality)에서 풍요롭게 되어, 우리를 통해 하나님(God)께 감사(thanksgiving)를 드리게 하려는 것입니다(which causes thanksgiving through us to God). 12 이 섬김의 사역(the administration of this service)은 성도들의 필요(the needs of the saints)를 채울 뿐만 아니라, 많은 사람들의 감사를 통해 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 합니다. 13 이 섬김의 증거(the proof of this ministry)를 통해, 그들은 그리스도 복음(the gospel of Christ)에 대한 여러분의 순종하는 믿음(the obedience of your confession)과 그들과 모든 사람에게 베푸는 여러분의 후한 나눔(your liberal sharing with them and all men)으로 인해 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다. 14 그리고 여러분 안에 있는 하나님의 넘치는 은혜(the exceeding grace of God in you)로 인해 여러분을 그리워하며 여러분을 위해 기도합니다(their prayer for you). 15 말로 다 표현할 수 없는 놀라운 선물(His indescribable gift)을 주신 하나님께 감사를 드립니다.

고린도후서 10장

영적 전쟁(The Spiritual War)

1 여러분과 함께 있을 때는 겸손하고(lowly among you), 떠나 있을 때는 여러분에게 담대한(bold toward you) 나 바울이 이제 그리스도의 온유(meekness)와 관용(gentleness)으로 여러분에게 간청합니다. 2 부디, 육신에 따라 행동하는 것처럼 우리를 간주하는 몇몇 사람들에게 대하려는 과감한 방식으로, 함께 있을 때 내가 여러분을 대하지 않도록 해주세요(But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh). 3 우리가 육신(the flesh) 안에서 살아가지만, 육신(the flesh)의 방식대로 싸우는 것은 아닙니다. 4-5-6 우리의 싸움 무기(the weapons of our warfare)는 세상적인(carnal) 게 아니라 견고한 요새(要塞, strongholds)를 무너뜨리는 하나님의 강력한 힘(mighty in God)입니다. 이 영적인 무기로 우리는 그 어떤 논쟁(arguments) 그리고 하나님에 대한 앎(the knowledge of God)을 거슬러 스스로 높아진 모든 교만(every high thing)을 무너뜨리고, 모든 생각(every thought)을 사로잡아 그리스도(Christ)께 순종하게 하며, 여러분이 온전하게 순종하게 되었을 때 모든 불순종(all disobedience)을 벌할 준비를 하기 때문입니다.

바울 권위의 한계(Limits of Paul’s Authority)

12 우리는 자신을 칭찬하는(commends) 사람들과 우리 자신을 같은 수준으로 여기거나 비교하지 않습니다. 그러나 자기 기준으로 자기를 재고(measuring themselves by themselves), 자기들끼리 비교하는(comparing themselves among themselves) 그들은 어리석습니다. 13 우리는 정도를 지나치게 자랑하지 않고, 다만 여러분을 포함한 어떤 영역(a sphere), 하나님께서 우리에게 정해 주신 범위(within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us) 안에서 자랑할 것입니다. 14 그리스도의 복음(the gospel of Christ)으로 찾아간 곳이 바로 여러분에게로였으므로, 마치 우리의 권위(our authority)가 여러분에게 미치지 않는 것처럼 과장되게 행동한(overextending) 것이 아닙니다. 15 우리는 다른 사람들의 수고(other men’s labors)를 가로채어 부당하게 자랑하는 것이 아니라, 여러분의 믿음(your faith)이 성장함에 따라 여러분을 통해 우리 영역 안에서(in our sphere) 더욱 크게 확장되기를 바라고 있습니다. 16 이는 여러분 너머의 지역들(the regions beyond you)에도 복음을 전하고자 하는 소망이지, 다른 사람이 이룬 업적의 영역(another man’s sphere of accomplishment)에서 자랑하려는 것이 아닙니다.

그들의 신실함에 대한 염려(Concern for Their Faithfulness)

바울과 거짓 사도들(Paul and False Apostles)

5 나는 내가 지극히 높은 사도들(the most eminent apostles)보다 조금도 부족하지 않다고 생각합니다. 6 내가 말솜씨(speech)에는 능숙하지 못할지라도 지식(knowledge)에는 그렇지 않습니다. 오히려 우리는 모든 면에서 여러분 가운데서 우리의 진실함을 충분히 드러냈습니다(we have been thoroughly manifested).

7 내가 하나님의 복음(the gospel of God)을 값없이 여러분에게 전하려고 나 자신을 낮춘 것(humbling myself)이 혹 죄(sin)가 됩니까? 오히려 그것은 여러분을 높이려는 나의 사랑 표현이었습니다. 8 나는 여러분을 섬기기 위해 다른 교회들(other churches)로부터 도움을 받아 그들에게 빚을 졌습니다(wages). 9 내가 여러분과 함께 있으면서 생활이 어려웠을 때도, 아무에게도 짐이 되지 않았습니다. 마케도니아(Macedonia)에서 온 형제들(the brethren)이 나의 부족한 것을 채워 주었기 때문입니다. 나는 어떤 일에서든 여러분에게 짐이 되지 않으려고 애썼으며, 앞으로도 그렇게 할 것입니다. 10 내 안에 그리스도의 진리(the truth of Christ)가 있는 것처럼, 아가야(Achaia) 지역에 대한 나의 이러한 자랑(this boasting)을 그 누구도 막을 수 없을 것입니다. 11 어째서입니까? 내가 여러분을 사랑하지 않기 때문입니까? 하나님께서 아십니다!

마지못한 자랑(Reluctant Boasting)

고린도후서 12장

낙원에 대한 비전(The Vision of Paradise)

육체의 가시(The Thorn in the Flesh)

5 여러분 스스로 믿음(faith) 안에 있는지 점검하세요(Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith), 여러분 자신을 시험하세요(Test yourselves). 예수 그리스도(Jesus Christ)께서 여러분 안에 계신 것을 여러분 스스로 알지 못합니까? — 여러분이 진실로 버림받은 자가 아니라면요(unless indeed you are disqualified). 6 그러나 우리가 버림받은 자가 아니라는 것을 여러분이 알게 될 것이라고 확신합니다(But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified).

바울은 온유함을 선호함(Paul Prefers Gentleness)

The Second Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

Since Paul’s first letter, the Corinthian church had been swayed by false teachers who stirred the people against Paul. They claimed he was fickle, proud, unimpressive in appearance and speech, dishonest, and unqualified as an apostle of Jesus Christ. Paul sent Titus to Corinth to deal with these difficulties, and upon his return, rejoiced to hear of the Corinthians’ change of heart. Paul wrote this letter to express his thanksgiving for the repentant majority and to appeal to the rebellious minority to accept his authority. Throughout the book he defends his conduct, character, and calling as an apostle of Jesus Christ.

To distinguish this epistle from First Corinthians, it was given the title Pros Korinthious B, the “Second to the Corinthians.” The A and B were probably later additions to Pros Korinthious.

2 Corinthians 1

Greeting

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia:

2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Comfort in Suffering

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. 6Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

Delivered from Suffering

8For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. 9Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead,10who delivered us from so great a death, and doesa deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us, 11you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on oura behalf for the gift granted to us through many.

Paul’s Sincerity

12For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you. 13For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand. Now I trust you will understand, even to the end 14(as also you have understood us in part), that we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Sparing the Church

15And in this confidence I intended to come to you before, that you might have a second benefit—16to pass by way of you to Macedonia, to come again from Macedonia to you, and be helped by you on my way to Judea. 17Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No? 18But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No. 19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me, Silvanus, and Timothy—was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. 20For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.21Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

23Moreover I call God as witness against my soul, that to spare you I came no more to Corinth.24Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand.

2 Corinthians 2

1But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you in sorrow. 2For if I make you sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me?

Forgive the Offender

3And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow over those from whom I ought to have joy, having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all. 4For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.

5But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but all of you to some extent—not to be too severe. 6This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, 7so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. 8Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. 9For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. 10Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that onea for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Triumph in Christ

12Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened to me by the Lord, 13I had no rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I departed for Macedonia.

14Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 15For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things? 17For we are not, as so many,a peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.

2 Corinthians 3

Christ’s Epistle

1Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? 2You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; 3clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.

The Spirit, Not the Letter

4And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit;a for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Glory of the New Covenant

7But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

12Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech— 13unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. 14But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 4

The Light of Christ’s Gospel

1Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. 2But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 3But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. 5For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. 6For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Cast Down but Unconquered

7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12So then death is working in us, but life in you.

13And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,”a we also believe and therefore speak, 14knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. 15For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

Seeing the Invisible

16Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 5

Assurance of the Resurrection

1For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

6So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

The Judgment Seat of Christ

9Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 11Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.

Be Reconciled to God

12For we do not commend ourselves again to you, but give you opportunity to boast on our behalf, that you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart. 13For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

16Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.18Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

2 Corinthians 6

Marks of the Ministry

1We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.2For He says:

“In an acceptable time I have heard you,

And in the day of salvation I have helped you.”a

Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

3We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. 4But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, 5in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; 6by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, 7by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, 8by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; 9as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; 10as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Be Holy

11O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you, our heart is wide open. 12You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your own affections. 13Now in return for the same (I speak as to children), you also be open.

14Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For youa are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

• “I will dwell in them
• And walk among them.
• I will be their God,
• And they shall be My people.”b

17Therefore

• “Come out from among them
• And be separate, says the Lord.
• Do not touch what is unclean,
• And I will receive you.”a
• 18“I will be a Father to you,
• And you shall be My sons and daughters,
• Says the LORD Almighty.”

2 Corinthians 7

1Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The Corinthians’ Repentance

2Open your hearts to us. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have cheated no one. 3I do not say this to condemn; for I have said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. 4Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my boasting on your behalf. I am filled with comfort. I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.

5For indeed, when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were troubled on every side. Outside were conflicts, inside were fears. 6Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 7and not only by his coming, but also by the consolation with which he was comforted in you, when he told us of your earnest desire, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more.

8For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. 9Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 12Therefore, although I wrote to you, I did not do it for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.

The Joy of Titus

13Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced exceedingly more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. 14For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting to Titus was found true. 15And his affections are greater for you as he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him. 16Therefore I rejoice that I have confidence in you in everything.

2 Corinthians 8

Excel in Giving

1Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: 2that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. 3For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, 4imploring us with much urgency that we would receivea 5And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. 6So we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well. 7But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also.

Christ Our Pattern

8I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

10And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago; 11but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have. 12For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.

13For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; 14but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack—that there may be equality. 15As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”a

Collection for the Judean Saints

16But thanks be to God who putsa the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. 17For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord. 18And we have sent with him the brother whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches, 19and not only that, but who was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which is administered by us to the glory of the Lord Himself and to show your ready mind, 20avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us— 21providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

22And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, because of the great confidence which we have in you. 23If anyone inquires about Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker concerning you. Or if our brethren are inquired about, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24Therefore show to them.

2 Corinthians 9

Administering the Gift

1Now concerning the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you; 2for I know your willingness, about which I boast of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal has stirred up the majority. 3Yet I have sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this respect, that, as I said, you may be ready; 4lest if some Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we (not to mention you!) should be ashamed of this confident boasting.a 5Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren to go to you ahead of time, and prepare your generous gift beforehand, which you had previously promised, that it may be ready as a matter of generosity and not as a grudging obligation.

The Cheerful Giver

6But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 9As it is written:

• “He has dispersed abroad,
• He has given to the poor;
• His righteousness endures forever.”a

10Now maya He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, 11while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 12For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God,13while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men, 14and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding grace of God in you. 15Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

2 Corinthians 10

The Spiritual War

1Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. 2But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

Reality of Paul’s Authority

7Do you look at things according to the outward appearance? If anyone is convinced in himself that he is Christ’s, let him again consider this in himself, that just as he is Christ’s, even so we are Christ’s.a 8For even if I should boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave usafor edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed— 9lest I seem to terrify you by letters. 10“For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.” 11Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such we will also be in deed when we are present.

Limits of Paul’s Authority

12For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ;15not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.

17But “he who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”a 18For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.

2 Corinthians 11

Concern for Their Faithfulness

1Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly—and indeed you do bear with me. 2For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicitya that is in Christ. 4For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

Paul and False Apostles

5For I consider that I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles. 6Even though I am untrained in speech, yet I am not in knowledge. But we have been thoroughly manifesteda among you in all things.

7Did I commit sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge? 8I robbed other churches, taking wages from them to minister to you.9And when I was present with you, and in need, I was a burden to no one, for what I lacked the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied. And in everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will keep myself. 10As the truth of Christ is in me, no one shall stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia. 11Why? Because I do not love you? God knows!

12But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. 13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Reluctant Boasting

16I say again, let no one think me a fool. If otherwise, at least receive me as a fool, that I also may boast a little. 17What I speak, I speak not according to the Lord, but as it were, foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. 18Seeing that many boast according to the flesh, I also will boast. 19For you put up with fools gladly, since you yourselves are wise! 20For you put up with it if one brings you into bondage, if one devours you, if one takes from you, if one exalts himself, if one strikes you on the face. 21To our shame I say that we were too weak for that! But in whatever anyone is bold—I speak foolishly—I am bold also.

Suffering for Christ

22Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I. 23Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. 24From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. 25Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness— 28besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. 29Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?

30If I must boast, I will boast in the things which concern my infirmity. 31The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. 32In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me;33but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped from his hands.

2 Corinthians 12

The Vision of Paradise

1It is doubtlessa not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: 2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. 3And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.5Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. 6For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me.

The Thorn in the Flesh

7And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Signs of an Apostle

11I have become a fool in boasting;a you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing. 12Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds. 13For what is it in which you were inferior to other churches, except that I myself was not burdensome to you? Forgive me this wrong!

Love for the Church

14Now for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be burdensome to you; for I do not seek yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. 15And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.

16But be that as it may, I did not burden you. Nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you by cunning!17Did I take advantage of you by any of those whom I sent to you? 18I urged Titus, and sent our brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not walk in the same spirit? Did we not walk in the same steps?

19Again, do you thinka that we excuse ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ. But we do all things, beloved, for your edification. 20For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults; 21lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced.

2 Corinthians 13

Coming with Authority

1This will be the third time I am coming to you. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”a 2I have told you before, and foretell as if I were present the second time, and now being absent I writea to those who have sinned before, and to all the rest, that if I come again I will not spare— 3since you seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, who is not weak toward you, but mighty in you. 4For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.

5Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. 6But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified.

Paul Prefers Gentleness

7Now Ia pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear approved, but that you should do what is honorable, though we may seem disqualified. 8For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. 9For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. And this also we pray, that you may be made complete. 10Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction.

Greetings and Benediction

11Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

12Greet one another with a holy kiss.

13All the saints greet you.

14The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
