<P><STRONG><EM><FONT face=Arial size=4><BR></FONT></EM></STRONG><SPAN class=norm12>AN England footballer has been left “in pieces” by his son’s claims that a family friend sexually abused him. </P>
<P>The millionaire player was furious after the boy told him.</P>
<P>A friend said: “This man has been a confidant of the family for years. He was trusted implicitly.</P>
<P>“Now the family feel disgusted beyond all comprehension.” </P>
<P>The Premiership ace exploded with rage when the tearful lad alleged that the man, who is in his 60s, had interfered with him.</P>
<P>Scotland Yard were called and launched a child abuse probe.</P>
<P>The boy was taken to a London police station and had to relive the ordeal in a special video suite.</P>
<P>Trained detectives from the force’s Child Abuse Investigation Command, known as SCD5, were used to coax a statement from the boy.</P>
<P>The suspect, who was trusted to visit the player’s home at will, was later arrested and interviewed at length. </P>
<P>Police confirmed a man has been on bail for several months and was charged this week with sexual assault on a male under 13.</P>
<P>The boy’s dad is a household name who has played successfully for the national side.</P>
<P>Neither he, his son nor the suspect can be named for legal reasons. A police source said: “This has been a very difficult inquiry. The abuse is said to have happened very recently.”</P>
<P>A spokesman for the star said last night: “Naturally all he can think about is his little boy. The man they have arrested was trusted by the family — they have known him for a long time.”</P>
