고린도후서 1:7-9 너희를 위한 우리의 소망이 견고함은 너희가 고난에 참예하는 자가 된 것 같이 위로에도 그러할 줄을 앎이라. 형제들아 우리가 아시아에서 당한 환난을 너희가 알지 못하기를 원치 아니하노니 힘에 지나도록 심한 고생을 받아 살 소망까지 끊어지고 우리 마음에 사형 선고를 받은 줄 알았으니 이는 우리로 자기를 의뢰하지 말고 오직 죽은 자를 다시 살리시는 하나님만 의뢰하게 하심이라.

하나님의 백성은 고난과 위로에 함께 참여한다. 사도 바울은 복음을 전하면서 많은 환난을 당하였고, 때로는 살 소망까지 끊어질 정도로 심한 고난을 겪었다. 하나님의 복음을 전파하는데 왜 이러한 환난이 오는가? 그것은 자신의 힘을 의지하지 말고 오직 하나님만 의지하라는 뜻이다.

구원은 오직 하나님께로부터 온다. 우리는 이 사실을 결코 잊지 않아야 한다. 환난을 통하여 이 진리를 더욱 깊이 깨닫고, 믿음을 끝까지 지켜야 한다. 사탄은 복음 전파를 심하게 방해한다. 인간의 힘으로는 이를 이길 수 없다. 오직 성령의 능력으로 이겨야 한다. 하나님의 능력을 자기 능력인 것처럼 자랑하는 자는 결국 사탄의 종으로 전락하게 된다.

죽음이 찾아오더라도 주님께서 다시 살리신다. 또한 주님께서 정하신 때가 이르지 않았다면 죽지 않는다. 그러므로 지금 하나님의 자녀들에게 닥치는 고난을 이상하게 여기지 말라. 고난은 우리의 교만을 막아 준다. 하나님의 능력이 나타날 때, 인간은 그것을 자기 능력으로 이루었다고 착각하기 쉽다. 이러한 태도는 자신을 우상화하게 만들고, 결국 멸망에 이르게 한다.

환난과 고난은 앞으로 생길 교만을 막아 주며, 우리가 지은 죄를 깨닫고 회개하게 한다.

요한계시록 3:19

무릇 내가 사랑하는 자를 책망하여 징계하노니 그러므로 네가 열심을 내라 회개하라.

히브리서 12:6

주께서 그 사랑하시는 자를 징계하시고 그의 받으시는 아들마다 채찍질하심이니라 하였으니.

시편 119:67

고난 당하기 전에는 내가 그릇 행하였더니 이제는 주의 말씀을 지키나이다.

시편 119:71

고난 당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로 인하여 내가 주의 율례를 배우게 되었나이다.

우리는 환난 가운데서 주님의 위로를 받는다. 환난과 위로를 통하여 믿음이 더욱 굳세어지고, 중도에 포기하지 않으며 끝까지 믿음을 지키게 된다. 이와 같이 끝까지 주님을 의지하며 순종하는 자가 마침내 천국에 이르는 것이다.

2 Corinthians 1:7-9

Our hope for you is firm, knowing that just as you share in our sufferings, so you will share in our comfort. Brothers, we do not want you to be unaware of the tribulations we suffered in Asia. We were under such severe pressure that we despaired of life itself; we felt as though we had received a death sentence in our hearts. This was so that we would not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

* God's people participate together in both suffering and comfort. The Apostle Paul suffered many tribulations while preaching the gospel, and at times experienced such severe hardship that he lost all hope of life. Why do such tribulations come when preaching God's gospel? It is a message that we should not rely on our own strength but rely solely on God.

Salvation comes only from God. We must never forget this fact. Through tribulation, we must realize this truth more deeply and keep our faith to the end. Satan severely hinders the preaching of the gospel. We cannot overcome this by human strength. We must overcome it only through the power of the Holy Spirit. Those who boast of God's power as if it were their own will eventually fall into becoming slaves of Satan.

Even if death comes, the Lord will raise you up again. Furthermore, one does not die unless the time appointed by the Lord has arrived. Therefore, do not be surprised by the suffering that is now befalling God's children. Suffering prevents our pride. When God's power is manifested, humans are prone to the delusion that they achieved it through their own ability. This attitude leads to self-idolization and ultimately results in destruction.

Tribulation and suffering prevent future pride and lead us to realize the sins we have committed and to repent.

Revelation 3:19

As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.

Hebrews 12:6

For the Lord disciplines those He loves, and chastises every son whom He accepts.

Psalm 119:67

Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I keep Your word. Psalm 119:71

It is good for me that I have been afflicted, so that I might learn your statutes.

We receive comfort from the Lord in the midst of tribulation. Through tribulation and comfort, our faith becomes stronger, and we do not give up halfway but keep our faith to the end. In this way, those who rely on and obey the Lord to the end are the ones who finally reach Heaven.
