There is a new twist in the bizarre bank robbery story in Erie, Pennsylvania. The captured bank robber had a bomb on him that he claimed he'd been forced to wear. Now he's dead and so is a co-worker who also died under mysterious circumstances. One FBI agent says it's the strangest case he's ever seen. Here's ABC's John Berman.
It was here at the PNC Bank in Erie that the bizarre drama began to play out.
Police captured Brian Wells, aged 46, a pizza delivery man, just minutes after he left the bank. Handcuffed, he pleaded with police that someone had strapped a bomb to his chest.
He wasn't lying. Moments later he was dead. Law enforcement officials say they simply did not have time to defuse the bomb safely.
"It's not like you see on TV where any police officer can walk up and decide to cut the yellow or the green or the red wire."
The FBI is now analyzing a handwritten note found on Wells and pieces of the bomb to figure out if he was telling the truth about being set up.
"He's not the type of person that would even have the guts to do something like that. Strap on a bomb."
Just before the robbery, co-workers at Mama Mia's Pizzeria saw Wells leave to deliver two sausage and pepperoni pies to a remote location, an unoccupied radio tower.
And another bizarre twist. Sunday, a co-worker of Wells died in his home. Officials hope an autopsy reveals the cause of the death and helps determine whether the strange fates of the two pizza workers are somehow connected.
