Question
1. What do you think about Korea’s competitiveness for tour business?
2. Do you have any places which you can recommend to a foreign people?
3. Can you explain Korean history to a foreign people?
For example, Could you explain invasion by foreign power?
4. Could you introduce a Korean food culture?
5. Why many Asian people enthusiastic at HanRyu?
In an era of globalization , no country can go it alone and Korea is no exception . Striving to enhance its global appeal abroad, Korea recently hosted the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit(APEC) in Busan starting from November 12. Its mission is to gain Korea recognition in the global community as an innovator and leader in areas like IT, biotechnology and entertainment .
The country has long been acknowledged as a leading developing nation , yet only some outsiders know anything about Korea. Indeed, some foreigners are aware of the fact that Korea has a long and rich 5,000-year history. For many Koreans, a positive portrayal of the country is long overdue . But until recently, Korea was probably best known for its problems with its neighbor in the Korean Peninsula . With foreign media increasingly covering Korea’s achievements and portraying the country in a positive light, the stakes are higher than ever for Korea to capitalize on this growing! trend.
The overall image of Korea and Koreans are indeed improving. A growing number of foreigners view Koreans as ambitious , hard-working and positively competitive , and the Korean Wave, referring to the overseas popularity of Korean programs, films and entertainers , is reshaping the image of Korea at large .
But pundits say Korea still has a long way to go in addressing its image abroad, particularly in areas regarding its political and economic sectors . No doubt, North Korea is limiting South Korea’s ability to improve its image as the protracted conflict surrounding the North’s nuclear weapons program is a constant source of distraction in realizing its goals.
Embarrassingly , North Korea’s bizarre behavior has boosted the profile of its leader Kim Jong-il onto the international stage -- so much so that US-based weekly magazine Time selected Kim as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world, while South Korean President Roh Moo-! hyun didn’t even make the list.
Unless there is a real breakth rough on the nuclear weapons program espoused by Pyongyang, Seoul is likely to struggle with the negative image of facing a lethal military threat tracing back to the 1950-53 Korean War.
For all the lingering negative aspects, a host of developments are helping the nation boost its appeal abroad. The biotech industry is a striking example. Dr. Hwang Woo-suk, who founded the World Stem Cell Hub and is an undisputed pioneer of cloning technology , represents the potential of Koreans to compete successfully on a global scale . Hwang’s breathtaking achievement in the cloning sector has sparked huge renewed interest in Korea’s scientific achievements.
A cultural boom is also looming . The impact of the Korean Wave being felt throughout the world in the form of movies, television dramas and music is no longer in question. The craze for Korean pop culture has even helped the tourism industry by boosting visitors to Korea by a half million this year alone.
The! long term prospects of improving Korea’s image on a global scale remains debatable , but for the short-term, Korea is expected to continue its ride on the crest of an ever growing wave of popularity.
