Mavs, Suns Held Advanced Draft Night Talks On Deandre Ayton Trade

The Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks engaged in advanced discussions on a trade of Deandre Ayton during the draft before talks stalled, sources tell Marc Stein of Substack.

The trade would have sent Ayton to Dallas for Tim Hardaway Jr., Richaun Holmes and JaVale McGee, but the Suns objected to the inclusion of McGee. Even though the Suns wouldn't have acquired any future first round picks, they liked turning Ayton into two rotation players in Hardaway and Holmes.

Sources tell Stein that the talks could be resumed. 

For now, the Suns reportedly are moving forward with Ayton on their roster. Ayton is represented by Bill Duffy, who also is the agent for Luka Doncic.

Beyond re-signing Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks have prioritized an upgrade at center this offseason. They previously engaged with the Atlanta Hawks on a trade for Clint Capela. Atlanta insisted on the Mavericks accepting John Collins instead, or adding Josh Green to the deal to include Capela. The Hawks moved on to a trade of Collins to the Utah Jazz on Monday.

The Los Angeles Clippers are potentially facing a crossroads with their roster as Kawhi Leonard and Paul George become extension available again this offseason. If there is a sense that one of those players, particularly George, might not be amenable to taking a sub-max extension, then they could become available in trade talks. The Clippers, however, are opening up a new arena in 2024 and there is an expectation that they will want to have the most competitive team possible at that point.

"The biggest subplot in the NBA that not enough people are talking about are Paul George and Kawhi Leonard with the Clippers being extension available," said "In Kawhi's case in July. I think in Paul George's case in September. I just don't think, based on what I've heard, that if those guys walk in the door and ask for four-year max extensions, I don't think the Clippers are just giving them to them.

"I think maybe on one or both... I mean Kawhi is a black box. I have no idea what's going on with Kawhi. Maybe in some quarters there would be a willingness to recognize the reality that 'we don't play enough for this' and there is negotiation wiggle room. But sometimes with stars, there isn't. Sometimes with stars you offend them by daring to negotiate. If that's the case, then there's another wild card in the market as soon as next week because if you know, like, this is not an unknown to the powers to be in Los Angeles, or with those representing those players. This is not an unknown playing field."

Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers had a meeting to discuss their future on Monday and he came away with the meeting remaining patient to see what moves they make during the free agency period.

"This was the meeting a lot of the league was watching to see if Damian Lillard requested a trade," said Brian Windhorst on Get Up Tuesday morning. "And he absolutely did not. From what I understand, the tenor of the meeting was that he doesn't want to pressure on the Blazers. He wants to see what they do in free agency. He's going to give them that time do that. This is an interesting strategy move.

"He said at the end of the season 'Get me veterans.' 

"The draft came and went and no veterans. He's still not pressing from what I've been told. He's still going to give the Blazers every opportunity to work through this free agency process this week whether it's through trades or signing players.

"I will tell you that this is going to potentially cause some teams that were going to make offers for him to have move on with business. They were waiting to see whether Dame Lillard was going to be on the market before they started to make moves this week. Now, some teams are going to have to make a decision either go forward or wait around. Lillard is going to wait around.

"It's certainly a move. I guess not surprising considering the way Dame has operated with the Blazers now for years. It did take some people in the league by surprise that he didn't go forward with what everyone was expected him to do."

Kyle Kuzma To Kings Has 'Momentum'

With the Sacramento Kings creating cap space on draft night, there has been "momentum" about a pursuit of Kyle Kuzma in free agency.

Even with a new renegotiate-and-extend deal for Domantas Sabonis, the Kings could have $25 million in cap space.

The Kings nearly acquired Kuzma in 2021 before the Los Angeles Lakers pivoted to a Russell Westbrook trade.

Kuzma has also been linked with the Utah Jazz, but they acquired John Collins via trade. The Jazz now have a logjam in the frontcourt that makes them unlikely to pursue a player at Kuzma's position.

The Miami Heat are considering using the waive-and-stretch provision on Kyle Lowry if they are unable to trade him, sources tell Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Lowry is due $29.7 million next season in the final year of his three-year, $85 million deal signed with the Heat in 2021.

If the Heat use the provision on Lowry, he would count against their cap at $9.9 million each of the next three seasons. Miami’s 2023-24 salary cap commitments would shrink from $178.5 million to $158.5 million, below the $165 million tax line and the $182.5 million second apron.

The waive-and-stretch provision must be used before Sept. 1.

The Heat have hoped to use Lowry in a trade for Damian Lillard.

Domantas Sabonis, Kings Could Agree To Four-Year, $120M Renegotiate-And-Extend Deal

The Sacramento Kings have the capacity to sign Domantas Sabonis to a renegotiate-and-extend deal after creating cap space on draft night.

Sources say the deal is expected to be in the range of $120 million over four seasons. Sabonis is coming off a four-year, $74.9 million extension signed with the Indiana Pacers in 2019.

Sabonis was an All-NBA center in his first full season with the Kings.

The New Orleans Pelicans have put Jonas Valanciunas on the trade block, sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

The Pelicans are searching for a more mobile, rim-protecting big.

Valanciunas is on an expiring contract after signing a two-year, $33.1 million extension in October 2021. Valanciunas went on record in late May indicating he would like to sign another extension with the Pelicans.

Valanciunas is represented by Mitch Nathan and Drew Morrison of CAA.

The Pelicans have reached out to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jarrett Allen.

Donte DiVincenzo To Decline Player Option, Reportedly Drawing Interest From Knicks

Donte DiVincenzo is set to decline his $4.7 million player option, sources told Kendra Andrews of ESPN.

DiVincenzo averaged 9.4 points and 4.5 rebounds last season.

DiVincenzo is drawing interest from the New York Knicks, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports and Ian Begley of SNY. 

Begley adds that the Knicks could turn their attention to Bruce Brown should they fail to sign DiVincenzo. 

Khris Middleton, Bucks Expected To Agree To New Deal

Khris Middleton declined his $40 million option with the Milwaukee Bucks last week, which will make him an unrestricted free agent.

"All signs are pointing" to Middleton and the Bucks quickly agreeing to a new contract, reports Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

Middleton participated in the Bucks' head coaching search, which was a signal that he would likely remain with the franchise over the long-term.

The Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings were two teams linked to Middleton as free agent suitors.
