[틈틈이 영어공부] On occasion

- 영한 : 가끔식, 때가 있을때 

- 영영 : 

sometimes, not very often
[Prepositional phrase] occasionally, from time to time, now and then

"On occasion" 과 "On occasions"을 혼용해서 쓰기는 하지만 약간의 의미차이가 있다고 합니다.

- On occasion은 설명그대로 sometime, from time to time의 의미로 가끔이라는 뜻이구요.

- On occasions는 발생할 가능성이 아주 적지만, 그런 상황이 발생되었을 "특정한 그때"를 의미한다고 합니다.

- 예문 : 

On occasion, he smokes a cigar after dinner. 
이따금 그는 저녁식사 후에 담배를 핀다.

Everyone, on occasion, makes mistakes. 
누구나 가끔은 실수를 한다.

However, on occasions, he is let down by his colleagues. 
하지만, 가끔 그는 동료들에게 실망합니다.

Mom: It's a big responsibility. Do you think you can handle it?
엄마: 개 키우는 건 큰 책임이 따르는 거야. 잘 키울 수 있을 것 같아?

Teresa: I'll take good care of it I promise.
터리서: 잘 키울게요. 약속해요.

Mom: If you don't then we'll have to give it away.
엄마: 그렇게 못하면 다른 사람에게 줄 수 밖에 없어.

Teresa: You mean you won't help me?
터리서: 저 안 도와 주신다는 말씀이세요?

Mom: On occasion but I'm very busy every day.
엄마: 가끔은 도와주겠지만 나도 매일 너무 바쁘잖니.

Teresa: Which one should I take?
터리서: 어떤 것으로 데려갈까요?

Mom: You decide. It's your puppy.
엄마: 네가 결정해라. 네 강아지니까.

[기억할만한 표현]
*handle it (or something): 처리하다 다루다.
"He handled the children's problem in a few minutes." (그는 아이들 문제를 금새 처리했어요.)

*take (good) care of (someone or something): (잘) 보살피다 관리하다.
"She isn't taking care of her car very well." (그녀는 차를 그렇게 잘 관리하지 못해요.)

*give (something or it) away: 버리다 내주다. (혹은 give away something)
"I gave some of my old clothes away." (낡은 옷들은 그냥 내줬어.)
