3. 한국통일의 방향성

우리는 모두 형제자매입니다. 지구상에서의 우리 삶의 목적이 물질적인 재화를 축적하기 위한 것일 수 없습니다. 우리가 이 세상에 살아 있는 것은 우리의 영원한 영성을 계발하여 완성시키기 위한 것입니다. 이렇게 할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 참된 사랑의 실천을 통하는 것, 즉 남을 위해서 사는 것입니다.

참된 사랑은 국가들 간의 관계를 포함한 모든 차원의 생활에서 실천되어야 합니다. 선진국들은 그 나라들로 하여금 다른 나라들을 도울 수 있도록 하나님이 그렇게 축복해 주신 것임을 자각해야 합니다. 그들은 후진국을 위하여 기꺼이 자신들을 희생해야 됩니다. 만일 이들 부유한 국가들이 이익 추구욕보다 더 고상한 차원에서 생각할 줄 모른다면 그들의 번영을 계속 유지하려고 아무리 노력하더라도 소용이 없을 것입니다.

한국은 중국, 일본, 소련과 미국 등 주요 국가들의 이해가 엇갈리는 자리에 있습니다. 한국동란 당시 한반도의 미래를 결정하기 위하여 많은 국가의 국민들이 위대한 희생을 치렀습니다.

오늘 우리는 그때와 똑같은 정신으로 이 자리에 모였습니다. 전 세계의 정치지도자들이 한국의 통일문제를 논의하기 위해서 이곳에 왔다는 것은 그 의의가 큽니다. 역사적으로 보더라도 알 수 있듯이 한반도의 통일은 일국의 문제가 아닙니다. 이것은 국제사회 전체의 문제인 것입니다.

여러분께서 한국의 통일문제를 논의하실 때 참고로 해주시기를 바라면서 몇 가지의 방향성을 말씀드리고자 합니다. 첫째, 북한은 남한을 무력으로 정복하고자 하는 계획을 버려야 합니다. 둘째, 북한은 북한식 개방정책을 실시하여 북한 주민들에게 신앙의 자유를 주고 북한 지도자의 신격화를 중단해야 됩니다.

이렇게 될 때에만 북한은 효과적인 경제개혁을 이룩할 준비를 갖추게 될 것입니다. 북한이 남한 및 기타 국가들과 협력하기 시작함에 따라 북한 주민들이 보다 나은 삶을 위한 현실적인 꿈을 가질 수 있고, 또 그들에게 이러한 유인책을 쓰지 않는 한 생산성의 향상은 거의 불가능하다는 것을 점점 더 확실하게 깨닫게 될 것입니다.

그리고 남한에서도 변화가 이루어져야 한다는 점을 강조하고 싶습니다. 남한은 전례 없는 번영의 물결을 타고 있습니다. 이러한 번영을 하나님의 축복으로 생각하고 남들과 함께 나누어 가져야 합니다. 이제 남한은 북한에 있는 형제자매를 포용하고 그들의 고통을 덜어 줄 준비와 각오를 해야 합니다.

3. 韓国統一の方向性

私たちは兄弟姉妹です。地球上での私たちの人生の目的は、物質的な財貨を蓄積することではありません。私たちがこの世に生きているのは、私たちの永遠の霊性を啓発し、完成させるためです。そのための唯一の方法は、真の愛を実践すること、すなわち他のために生きることです。

真の愛は、国家間の関係を含んだすべての次元の生活において実践されなければなりません。先進諸国は、自国を通して他の国を助けることができるように神様が祝福してくださったことを自覚しなければなりません。彼らは、発展途上国のために喜んで自分たちを犠牲にしなければなりません。もしこれらの富裕な国家が、利益追求欲よりも高尚な次元で考えることができないならば、自らの繁栄を維持しようといくら努力したとしても、それは無駄なことになるでしょう。

韓国は、中国、日本、ソ連とアメリカなど、主要国家の利害が交錯する場所にあります。韓国動乱当時、韓半島の未来を決定するために、多くの国家の国民が、偉大な犠牲を払いました。きょう私たちは、その時と同じ精神をもってこの場に集まりました。全世界の政治指導者たちが、韓国の統一問題を論議するためにここに来られたということは、その意義がとても大きいのです。歴史的に見てもお分かりのように、韓半島の統一は、一国の問題ではありません。これは、国際社会全体の問題なのです。

皆様が韓国の統一問題を論議される時の参考にしてくださることを願いながら、いくつか方向性についてお話ししようと思います。第一に、北朝鮮は、韓国を武力で征服しようとする計画を捨てなければなりません。第二に、北朝鮮は、開放政策を実施して、住民たちに信仰の自由を与え、北朝鮮指導者を神格化することを中断しなければなりません。

そのようになった時に、初めて北朝鮮は効果的な経済改革を行う準備を整えるようになるのです。北朝鮮が韓国およびその他の国々と協力し始めることによって、北朝鮮の住民たちがより良い生活のための現実的な夢をもつことができ、また彼らにこのような誘引策を使わない限り、生産性の，向上はほとんど不可能であることを徐々に、より確実に悟るようになるでしょう。

そしてまた、韓国においても変化が起きなければならないという点を強調したいと思います。韓国は、前例のない繁栄の波に乗っています。このような繁栄を神様の祝福と思って、その繁栄を他と共に分かち合わなければなりません。今後韓国は、北朝鮮にいる兄弟姉妹を包容し、彼らの苦痛を減らしてあげる準備と覚悟をしなければなりません。

3. The way to reunify Korea

We are all brothers and sisters. The purpose of our life on earth is not to amass material goods. We are alive in this world so that we can develop and perfect our eternal spirit. The only way to do this is through the practice of true love, to live for the sake of others.

We need to practice true love on all levels of life, including relations between nations. The developed nations of the world need to believe that God blessed them for the purpose of helping others. They must be willing to sacrifice for the developing nations of the world. If the prosperous nations do not think beyond the desire for profit, their very desire for prosperity will result in their prosperity slipping away.

Today, the interests of the key nations of China, Japan, the Soviet Union and the United States converge on Korea. At the time of the Korean War, people of many nations made the supreme sacrifice to determine the future of this peninsula. We have gathered here today in the same spirit of concern. It is entirely appropriate that political leaders from around the world have come here to discuss the issue of Korean unification. Historically, this is more than a national issue. It involves the entire international community.

I would like to suggest a few guidelines, which I hope you will consider in your discussions about the unification of Korea. With regard to North Korea, there are several prerequisites to the process of reunification.

First, North Korea must abandon its plans for military conquest of the South. Second, they must put an end to their extreme isolation and open their society to the world community of nations. Third, they must carry out their own version of glasnost, thereby giving their people the most important freedom, the freedom to worship as they desire, and they must put a stop to the deification of their leader.

Only then will North Korea be ready to undertake effective economic reforms. As North Korea begins to cooperate with South Korea and the other nations of the world, it will become increasingly evident to its leaders that unless they give people realistic hope for a better life, as well as incentives and freedoms to achieve it, it will be virtually impossible for them to increase their productivity.

I want to emphasize, however, that there must also be change in South Korea. South Korea has been experiencing an unprecedented wave of prosperity. This prosperity must be seen for what it is, the blessing of God, and it must be shared with others. We the people of this nation must now be ready and willing to embrace our brothers and sisters in the North, and help to alleviate their suffering. In the same way, the free world must now totally support the initiatives toward freedom made in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and China.
