Rockets Discussing Third Pick Trades With Nets, Grizzlies

The Houston Rockets have discussed trading the third overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft with both the Brooklyn Nets and Memphis Grizzlies.

The Rockets' target in trade talks with the Nets is Mikal Bridges. However, Brooklyn is seeking players to add around Bridges in any deals they make.

The Grizzlies are reportedly attempting to move up to be in range to draft center Donovan Clingan. Memphis has a need for a long-term center to add to their core. Clingan isn't expected to be available when the Grizzlies select with the ninth overall pick.

The Indiana Pacers would like to sign Andrew Nembhard to a contract extension this offseason, but they can only offer him a four-year, $75 million deal due to CBA limits on raises.

With Nembhard playing so well in a lead guard role in the playoffs when Tyrese Haliburton was injured, he could potentially command a larger contract if he were to hit the open market.

If Nembhard declines the extension, the Pacers could decline their team option on him in 2025 and extend the qualifying offer for him to become a restricted free agent. If the Pacers exercise the affordable $2 million option for 25-26, Nembhard would then become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Nembhard is represented by Todd Ramasar and Jaafar Choufani.

NBA Close To Finalizing 11-Year, $76 Billion Combined Deals With Disney, NBC, Amazon

The NBA is nearing completion of a combined 11-year, $76 billion set of deals with Disney, NBC and Amazon. The deals average out to $6.9 billion per season for the NBA, which is more than 2.5 times higher than its existing deals. The NFL recently doubled its fees under its last deal to around $10 billion per year. 

An official announcement could still be weeks away as it will need approval from the Board of Governors. 

ESPN's deal is considered the "A" package and they will pay an average of $2.6 billion per year, which is up from $1.5 billion under the current deal. While ESPN will broadcast fewer overall games, they retain both The Finals and a Conference Finals annually. ESPN will be allowed to air games on its direct-to-consumer streaming service expected to launch in 2025.

NBC will pay an averaged of $2.5 billion per year, while Amazon will pay $1.8 billion per year. NBC and Amazon will alternate broadcasting one of the two Conference Finals series. Amazon will also broadcast the In-Season Tournament and Play-In games. 

NBC will air around 100 games per season with approximately half airing exclusively on Peacock. Games would air on NBC on Tuesdays and Sundays when there isn’t a conflict with NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”

The global popularity of the NBA was a big motivator for Amazon's Prime Video. 

Warner Bros. Discovery will almost certainly lose their longtime partnership with the NBA. Warner had a chance to commit to a deal at $2.2 billion per year, but sources say they walked away due to their displeasure with the price relative to the value of the package. Warner believed the NBA took too many playoff games and the play-in tournament out of its package to give to Amazon.

When Warner's exclusive window closed, NBC quickly submitted a $2.5 billion per year bid. NBC tried to get a share of the Finals during their talks with the NBA, but ultimately fell short with ESPN/ABC retaining it exclusively.

On a recent episode of The Ringer's NBA Draft Show, ESPN's Jonathan Givony shared some thoughts on the San Antonio Spurs. Givony said he's heard that the Spurs are open to moving their draft picks, as well as any players not named Victor Wembanyama or Devin Vassell.

"Everything I hear is that they want to be competitive next year, they want to be in the playoffs. They’re not looking to make this a two- to three-year process, where they’re in the lottery again next year. For right now, they want to be competitive next year and that’s why I think they’re going to be aggressive with those picks," Givony said.

"I've heard nobody in the roster is untouchable except Victor and Devin Vassell."

Givony also added that he's heard available players are interested in playing in San Antonio because of the presence of the young superstar big man.

“Every free agent, every veteran guard, they all want to play with Victor Wembanyama," Givony said.

Nikola Topic Has Partially Torn ACL In Left Knee

Nikola Topic, a possible top-10 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, has been diagnosed with a partially torn ACL.

Topic suffered a left knee injury in January shortly after his midseason transfer from Mega MIS to Red Star Belgrade, missing four months of Adriatic League action. When Topic returned in late April, he played in three games before injuring the same knee again.

Topic's agent, Misko Raznatovic, told ESPN he does not expect the injury to have a major impact on his draft position.

Topic averaged 18.6 points and 6.9 assists shooting 65% from 2-point range, 29% for 3 and 85% from the free throw line at Mega MIS.

There is a frequently recited mantra that the team with the best player in the series typically wins it. But the broader context of the teams matters as well. The Dallas Mavericks have the better player in Luka Doncic, but the Boston Celtics had the far superior record and point differential in the regular season.

According to research by Ben Rohrbach, the "best" player in the NBA Finals has won 56 of 68 championships, good for a win percentage of 82.4 percent. LeBron James accounts for five of those 12 losses.

The team with the better regular season record has finished 47-18 in the Finals, which is a win percentage of 72.3 percent. Teams that finish with eight or more wins than their opponents are 30-5 (.857 winning percentage) in the Finals.

Kristaps Porzingis Has 'No Ill Will' Toward Mavericks

On the eve of the Finals against his former team, Kristaps Porzingis was adamant he holds "no ill will" about his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks.

During Porzingis' time with the Mavericks, they had a pair of competitive first round exits against the Los Angeles Clippers. Porzingis tore his meniscus in the series in 2020 and had become more of a role player in 2021. The Mavericks reached the Western Conference Finals in 2022 after trading him to the Washington Wizards at that year's trade deadline. 

"Not all of it was like not good," Porzingis said. "We had some good moments. We had some decent moments, but overall it just didn't work for both sides. It wasn't perfect. But I would say everything -- teammates, locker room -- I know at that time there were some rumors that there was something in the locker room. It was never like that. It was all just noise at the end.

"It just wasn't perfect for us playing together, and it didn't work out. And that's it. There's no ill will, I don't think from their side. For sure, [there is not] from my side. I don't think there should be. It just didn't work out, but I have nothing but love for Dallas and for my teammates and for everybody there."

Porzingis has acknowledged it was initially difficult for him to play a secondary role behind Luka Doncic.

"I don't know why it didn't work out," said Doncic, who has downplayed the discussion about friction in his relationship with Porzingis over the years. "We were still both young. We tried to make it work, but it just didn't work. So we moved on."

The Chicago Bulls plan to hire Billy Donovan III as head coach of the Windy City Bulls of the G League.

Donovan is the son of Bulls head coach Billy Donovan.

Donovan previously was an assistant coach with the Austin Spurs and San Antonio Spurs. Since 2020, Donovan has been a video coordinator and assistant coach with the Bulls.
