Cho-Dan Candidate Essay
---
How can martial arts training help us achieve both excellent technical skills
and a meaningful life?
When discussing my life and explaining my passion for martial arts, I feel it is important to begin
at the beginning.
The understanding and application of training changes over time.
As a child, I grew up watching martial arts movies such as Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee,
Breaker! Breaker! with Chuck Norris, and Bloodsport with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
I remember thinking to myself, “I want to be tough like those guys.”
In 1992, at ten years old, I convinced my parents that I was ready to start taking “karate.”
I had to promise that no matter how dificult it became, I would not quit or give up. Approximately six
years later, I achieved my first Dan in Soo Bahk Do.
I did not achieve that goal on my own. My father started training alongside me, and eventually my sister joined as well. Martial arts became a family experience for many years.
However, achieving Cho-Dan came from more than simply having my family beside me.
My instructor played the biggest role. Knowing when to push me, when not to push me, what areas of my
training needed more focus, and when I needed a swift kick in the behind helped me grow not
only as a martial artist, but as a human being.
Applying those lessons years later to my training in JSKR Haedong Kumdo, I have experienced
significant development in many diferent areas.
As I learned through my previous martial arts training, Cho-Dan is only the beginning.
It is not mastery of an art. I look at it as an understanding of the basics.
Consistent practice of the basics is one of the best ways to sharpen our ability to execute a technique.
It allows us to understand not only how to perform a technique, but also how to demonstrate it so that others can learn with us and from us.
When practicing the foundation of
an art, even when we believe we have perfected it, there is always another level to reach.
There are always improvements to be made in the mechanics, speed, fluidity, and movement of
the body.
Even something as fundamental as a straight cut can continue to be studied and refined.
I believe there is always more to learn.
So, how does training give us a meaningful life?
Having a meaningful life means something diferent to everyone.
To me, it means living my best
life while also considering how my life afects the people around me. Living every day for yourself and pursuing your own happiness is a dream for many people.
Who doesn’t want agreat life? But we also have to ask ourselves: Did I help anyone else by living my life only for
me?
If the answer is no, wouldn’t that be selfish?
Training in martial arts has taught me throughout the years that we are always an example to
those who come after us.
That could be a young child beginning their martial arts journey,
someone older than us who is just starting out, a friend struggling with life, or even a stranger
who simply needs help.
Can we help them using what martial arts has taught us?
The answer is yes.
That does not mean that if a friend of mine is struggling with depression,
I should teach them a straight cut.
I don’t believe performing Sim Hyung will necessarily fix whatever problem they may be experiencing.
However, spreading what I would describe as healing energy through
love, compassion, and caring for a friend in need might be exactly what they need.
Living my life as a person who genuinely cares for others is how I believe a martial artist should
live.
Finding inner peace and spreading that peace to others is a meaningful way to live.
Helping others gives meaning to our own lives.
I have firsthand experience seeing children who struggled with confidence, concentration, and
listening grow through martial arts.
I have watched them learn the importance of respect and
gain the confidence they need to become better human beings.
I believe this is one of the most important purposes of martial arts. It is not just about technique.
It is about developing people and helping them become better versions of themselves.
When I think back to the beginning of my training, I started because I wanted to be like Chuck
Norris and Bruce Lee.
The reason I am still training today, however, is very diferent. I continue
because I truly believe martial arts has helped shape me into a better human being.
I haven’t mastered life yet, but I am beginning to understand its basics.
How can understanding the principles of nature improve our martial arts
skills, relationships, health, and decision-making?
Understanding the principles of nature afects everything in life. I like to think of God as nature.
We are created within a circle—a circle of life. We begin as infants and, under normal circumstances, eventually grow old and die.
As I age, the abilities of my body are not the same as they were during my childhood.
Today, my techniques may not be as sharp or powerful as they once were, but through consistent practice
they can become as natural, fluid, and instinctive as my body physically allows.
At the same time, my relationships continue to grow stronger.
My decision-making has also changed. My decisions are no longer based solely on how something will afect me.
I tend to look at the bigger picture and consider how my decisions may afect others.
God is love.
Nature is love.
Recently, while traveling in Hawaii, we saw beautiful trees with colorful trunks that looked almost
like a rainbow.
Our guide suggested that we hug one of the trees. He explained that there was science behind the idea that a tree could respond positively to a hug. Whether or not every part
of that explanation is scientifically proven, the idea stayed with me.
Trees are part of nature. Nature is love. Humans are also part of nature. Therefore, I believe we
should strive to be made of love as well.
With love comes kindness. We should be kind.
With kindness comes caring. We should be caring.
Understanding these principles of nature should influence the decisions we make. If a decision
is made out of anger, selfishness, or a desire to hurt someone, it is unlikely to be a good decision.
When our decisions are guided by love, caring, and kindness, we give ourselves a much better foundation for making the right choices.
How does this apply to martial arts?
Understanding our own abilities and listening to our bodies helps determine how hard we should
physically push ourselves.
I have worked through serious injuries, and I have personally
struggled with patience.
I have wanted to heal instantly, only to be reminded that healing
happens at its own natural pace. It cannot simply be forced.
I believe, however, that healing can be encouraged not only by creating the right conditions and
giving the body what it needs, but also by understanding how energy flows through the body.
When we learn to recognize, balance, and direct that energy, we may be able to support the body’s natural healing process and encourage it to work more quickly.
I believe that, under the
right circumstances, healing can sometimes occur at what seem like miraculous speeds.
The same principle applies to our relationships.
Our relationships are stronger in love than they could ever be in vain. Love gives us patience.
Caring gives us understanding. Kindness allows us to look beyond ourselves and consider what
another person may be experiencing.
Our health can also improve when we apply these principles.
Loving yourself enough to eat
healthier and caring for your body through exercise can make you healthier.
Reducing unnecessary stress can improve your mental and emotional well-being.
For example, people who constantly focus on anger and negativity often place additional stress
on themselves.
Learning to focus on positive things, showing kindness, and reducing
unnecessary stress can contribute to a healthier and more balanced life.
Ultimately, I believe the principles of nature teach us balance. As martial artists, we should strive
to understand our bodies, our minds, and the people around us.
We should continue improving
our technique while also improving ourselves as human beings.
Cho-Dan is not the end of the journey. It is another beginning.
The more I train, the more I realize that the goal is not simply to become better at Haedong
Kumdo.
The goal is to become better at life—and to use what I learn to help others along the way.

《 Evaluation 》
This essay sincerely describes the writer’s journey from his childhood motivation for beginning martial arts to the deeper understanding of its true purpose that he has developed through many years of training.
It is especially commendable that he does not regard Cho-Dan as a sign of completion or a final destination, but as a new beginning in which he has started to understand the fundamentals. His recognition that even a basic technique such as a straight cut must be continually studied and refined demonstrates the proper attitude required for continued technical development.
He also expands the value of martial arts beyond personal strength and technical improvement, recognizing it as a means of helping others through love, compassion, and kindness while becoming a better human being. His firsthand observations of positive changes in the children he has taught further demonstrate his understanding that martial arts is ultimately an education that develops and transforms people.
His effort to connect the principles of nature with physical change, recovery from injury, human relationships, and sound decision-making is also meaningful. In particular, his realization that we must respect the condition of the body and cannot force healing corresponds closely with the fundamental direction of training that follows nature.
From this point forward, he should deepen his understanding of nature and energy through direct experience in training. He must apply Follow the Energy, the central principle of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, more concretely through technique, breathing, awareness, and daily life. Love and healing energy should not remain merely as ideas or beliefs; they must be demonstrated through consistent training, a disciplined life, and actions taken for the benefit of others.
Cho-Dan does not signify the completion of swordsmanship. It signifies that the practitioner has established the fundamentals and is prepared to enter the true path of training. This essay clearly reflects the humility, self-reflection, and sense of responsibility required at that starting point.
Overall, this is a sincere and meaningful essay that demonstrates the proper values and strong potential for continued growth expected of a Cho-Dan practitioner.
