사도 바울은 복음을 전할 때 복음을 반대하는 사람들이 그를 돌로 쳐서 죽은 줄 알고 성 밖에 내치기도 했습니다. 그때 하나님께서 바울을 낙원으로 이끄셔서 인간의 말로 표현할 수 없는 놀라운 천국을 보여주셨습니다.

낙원은 천국을 의미합니다. 천국은 영원한 기쁨과 즐거움이 가득한 곳이기에 낙원이라 부르기도 합니다. 천국은 하나님의 영원한 나라이며, 하나님 나라가 하늘에 있으므로 천국이라 칭합니다. 그러므로 하나님의 나라, 낙원, 천국은 서로 다른 장소가 아니라 하나님의 영원하신 나라를 가리키는 동일한 표현입니다.

하늘은 매우 높고 광대합니다. 성경에서는 하늘을 세 영역으로 나눕니다. 첫째 하늘은 대기권으로 새들이 나는 하늘입니다. 둘째 하늘은 해와 달, 별들이 있는 광대한 우주입니다. 셋째 하늘은 하나님이 계시는 천국입니다. 둘째 하늘인 우주는 인간 상상을 초월하는 광대함을 지니고 있으며, 과학자들조차 그 정확한 크기를 알지 못합니다.

그러나 하나님은 한 순간에 바울을 셋째 하늘, 즉 낙원으로 데려가셨습니다. 아무리 광대해도 우주는 하나님의 피조물에 불과합니다. 창조주이신 하나님은 피조물에 제한받지 않으십니다.

셋째 하늘과 낙원은 분리하여 생각할 수 없습니다. 바울은 자신이 "셋째 하늘에 이끌려 갔다" 하면서, 이어 "낙원으로 이끌려 갔다"고 표현했습니다. 이 말씀들은 셋째 하늘과 낙원이 같은 천국임을 명확히 보여줍니다.

예수님께서 다시 오시고 하나님의 최종 심판이 이루어질 때, 지금 우리의 하늘과 땅은 불로 심판받기 위해 보존되어 있습니다.

베드로후서 3장 7절 말씀입니다. “이제 하늘과 땅은 그 동일한 말씀으로 불사르기 위하여 간수하신 바 되어 경건하지 아니한 사람들의 심판과 멸망의 날까지 보존하여 두신 것이니라.”

현재 우리가 보는 하늘과 땅은 영원하지 않습니다. 하나님의 심판 날에 불로 온전히 심판받을 것입니다. 그러나 셋째 하늘, 곧 하나님의 나라와 낙원은 영원한 나라입니다.

Understanding Heaven and Paradise in 2 Corinthians 12:1–5

These are the words of 2 Corinthians 12:1–5.

“Though it is not profitable, I must go on boasting. I will speak of visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know; God knows—was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know; God knows—he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak. On behalf of such a man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast except in my weaknesses.”

When the Apostle Paul preached the gospel, those who opposed the gospel sometimes stoned him and cast him outside the city, thinking that he was dead. At that time, God led Paul to Paradise and showed him the marvelous heaven that cannot be expressed in human words.

Paradise means heaven. Heaven is also called Paradise because it is a place filled with eternal joy and delight. Heaven is God’s eternal kingdom, and since the kingdom of God is in heaven, it is called heaven. Therefore, the kingdom of God, Paradise, and heaven are not different places, but identical expressions referring to God’s eternal kingdom.

The heavens are very high and vast. In the Bible, the heavens are divided into three realms. The first heaven is the atmosphere, the heaven in which birds fly. The second heaven is the vast universe where the sun, moon, and stars are. The third heaven is heaven, where God dwells. The universe, which is the second heaven, possesses a vastness beyond human imagination, and even scientists do not know its exact size.

However, God took Paul in a moment to the third heaven, that is, to Paradise. No matter how vast it is, the universe is merely God’s creation. God, the Creator, is not limited by creation.

The third heaven and Paradise cannot be considered separately. Paul said that he had been “caught up to the third heaven,” and then expressed it by saying that he had been “caught up into Paradise.” These words clearly show that the third heaven and Paradise are the same heaven.

When Jesus comes again and God’s final judgment takes place, our present heaven and earth are being kept for judgment by fire.

These are the words of 2 Peter 3:7. “But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.”

The heaven and earth we see now are not eternal. On the day of God’s judgment, they will be completely judged by fire. However, the third heaven, that is, the kingdom of God and Paradise, is an eternal kingdom.
