저는 라스베거스에 있는 University of Southerm Nevada 의 Doctor of Pharmacy 3년 과정 중 1학년에 이번에 입학하게 된 학생입니다.
저희 학교도 단탈 스쿨이 있으나 DDS나 DMD과정은 아니고 레지던시만 있습니다.
서울의 모 여대 생물학과를 2006년에 졸업하고 미국 에 어학연수차 그해에 오게 되었는데, 이곳의 치과대학에 관심이 가서 그대부터 정보 수집하며 이것저것 알아보기 시작했습니다.
한학기만에 어학연수를 그만하고 쑤니계열에서 General Biology를 들으면서 동부쪽 치대들 몇개를 알아보게 되었고, 처음에 혹시 치대 다 떨어지면 어쩌지 싶어서 back-up plan으로 약대 몇군데를 알아보았습니다.
그러면서 가장 끌린 곳이 네바다남부 대학교인데..
다른 곳과는 너무 다르게 이 학교는 TOEFL, PCAT, recommendation, research, shadowing, 등을 일체 요구하지 않으며
한국에서의 학점을 모두 인정 해준다는 것입니다.
저의 경우 미국에서는 영어 작문이랑 퍼블릭 스피킹만 들었고
나머지는 모두 한국의 학부에서 이수 한 것들을 인정 받았습니다.
WES의 리포팅을 요구하므로 12월초인 올해 입시를 감안할때 관심 있으신 분들은 급히 영문성적증명서를 보내서 평가를 받아야할것 같네요.
밑에 보시면 선수 과목이 나오는데, 실제로 일반 화학 1, 2 라든지 유기화학 1, 2는 대한민국의 대학에서 4학점을 케이스가 아주 드뭅니다. 저 같은 경우도 각각 3학점씩밖에 할당이 안되어 있었는데..
싸이언스 메이저일 경우에는 그런것들이 감안되어서 추가로 과목을 안들어도 된다고 하더군요. 미생물이랑 미적분, 생리학, 해부학 등도 모두 그대로 인정 되어서 전 조금 운이 좋게 서루 전형을 통과 할 수 있었습니다.
보시면 알겠지만, 다른 전형 요소가 없길래 이 학교는 학점(GPA)가 절대 적입니다. 한국/미국에서 어느대학 나왔느냐, 몇학년까지 다니다 왔느냐 이런것 전혀 상관없고 오로지 성적만 가지고 인터뷰 할 학생들을 뽑습니다.
그러기에 다른 약학대학에 비해 합격자들의 학점도 조금 높은 편입니다.
(저희 클래스는 3.5 정도라고 하네요. 3.1~3.2 정도면 인터뷰는 받구요)
참고로 저는 WES 에서 받은 학점이 3.61 (실제로 한국의 학점은 그것보다 0.1 정도 높았구요)이었으며 미국에서 이수한 영작문과 퍼블릭스피킹은 B+와 B를 받았습니다.
인터뷰 역시 30분 정도로 2명의 교수와 함께 하였고, 지원동기나 포부 등 간단한 질문들을 받았던것으로 기억합니다. (에세이 시험 없음)
바로 밑에 이 학교의 요강을 카피해놓았습니다. 8개의 science 과목 중에서 4개만 있으면 일단 지원이 가능하며 나머지 과목들은 입학전에 이수하시면 됩니다. 그러기에 이미 미국이나 한국에서 사이언스 메이저를 하시는 분이라면 지금당장이라도 어플라이 가능할것으로 생각 되네요. (General Chem, Organic Chem, Math, Micro, 등의 기본 과목은 다 이수하셨을테니까요..)
의대/치대 지망생은 많은데, 많은 학생들이 백업 프랜이 없는것 같아서 그냥 제 경험을 주절거려 보았습니다. 저 역시 치대를 알아보다가 프레레퀴짓 하나 듣고 바로 이렇게 덜컥 합격이 되어버려서 처음에는 많은 고민도 되었으나
체인약국에서 몇달째 일해보고 병원에서 발런티어도 최근 해본 결과 크게 불만 없이 잘 다니고 잇습니다. ^^ 참고로 미국 대다수의 약대(Doctor of Pharmacy)가 4년인것에 비해 저희 학교는 3년 과정입니다. 여름 방학때 조금씩 수업을하기에 다른 학교에 졸업을 빨리 하고 돈도 절약할 수 있습니다.
만약에 이 약학대학에 합격을 하시고 또 1년간 의대/치대를 준비하고 싶으시다면 약간의 디파짓을 내고 1년 입학을 연기하는 방법도 있습니다. 아무쪼록 한국이나 미국에서 바이오 전공하시는 분이나 현재 프리메드/덴탈 과정을 하는 학생들에게 도움이 되는 정보였으면 좋겠네요.
수업 시작한지는 얼마 되지 않았지만, 커뮤니티 칼리지 2년 다니고 온 19살 학생들부터 아이비리그 졸업자, 40대의 아저씨 등 여러 학생들을 만났습니다. 아무쪼록 저희 학교가 다른 약대에 비해 요구하는것도 적고 입학도 용이하다고 생각 되어 혹시 관심 있는 계실까봐 몇자 적어 보았습니다. 모두들 가을학기/쿼터 열심히 하셔서 어드미션 사이클에 좋은 소식들만 있길 기원합니다.
In order to be eligible for admission to the PharmD program, applicants must:
Complete a minimum of 60 semester credit hours (90 quarter hours) of study at an accredited college or university in the United States or its equivalent.
Achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8/4.0 or its equivalent.
Receive a grade of “C” (or its equivalent) or better in all science & math prerequisite courses and a grade of "B" or better in English Composition 1 and Speech.
All applicants that meet the minimum criteria will have their file evaluated. The file evaluation process will be competitive and the most competitive applicants will be invited for an on-campus interview. It is recommended (but not required) that all coursework be completed within six calendar years of the time of application to the program.
For fall 2009, applicants must complete four of the Science/Math Prerequisites listed below by December 31, 2008 so that the Admissions Office can calculate the Science Prerequisite Grade Point Average. For fall 2010, applicants must complete FIVE of the Science/Math prerequisites listed below by December 31, 2009. All prerequisites must be completed by the time of enrollment in August.
The College requires the following Science/Math and Humanities prerequisite coursework:
SCIENCE & MATH PREREQUISITES:
General Chemistry I with Laboratory 4 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of Chemistry I and 4 quarter hours of Chemistry II
General Chemistry II with Laboratory 4 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of Chemistry III
Organic Chemistry I with Laboratory 4 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of Organic Chemistry I and 4 quarter hours of Organic Chemistry II
Organic Chemistry II with Laboratory 4 semester hours or 4 quarter hours of Organic Chemistry III
Calculus 1 3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours
Microbiology 3 semester hours or 3 quarter hours
Human Anatomy
Human Physiology The College requires a total of 6 semester hours or 8 quarter hours of Human Anatomy and Human Physiology. These prerequisites can be fulfilled by completing one of the following options:
3 semester hours of Human Anatomy and 3 semester hours of Physiology OR
3 semester hours of Human Anatomy and Physiology I and 3 semester hours of Human Anatomy and Physiology II OR
6 semester hours of Human Physiology OR
Anatomy and physiology courses with modifiers other than "human" (e.g., mammalian, vertebrate) will be considered on a case-by-case basis through a syllabus review. Only courses that primarily emphasize human anatomy and human physiology will be considered for evaluation.
HUMANITIES PREREQUISITES:
English Composition I (Freshman Level) – 3 semester hours or 3 quarter hours
Speech 3 semester hours or 3 quarter hours (CANNOT BE ON-LINE COURSE)
