SEOUL, Aug. 21 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday met with Bill Gates, the chair of the Gates Foundation, and discussed ways to expand cooperation in global health initiatives, the presidential office said.
​
Lee praised Gates' efforts in public health and climate change and pledged to seek ways to expand cooperation with the nonprofit foundation's global initiatives.
​
"You have been developing public goods for humanity, such as vaccines and eco-friendly energy facilities, which is truly admirable," he said at the start of the meeting. "The government of the Republic of Korea will also seek ways to participate as much as possible."

Gates said he expects South Korea to play an important role in global health initiatives through "innovative products" in vaccines and diagnostic equipment, as well as other contributions.
​
"The growth of the bioscience sector here in Korea is very impressive whether it's the research at the International Vaccine Institute," he said, mentioning his foundation's cooperation with SD Biosensor, EuBiologics, SK bioscience and LG.
​
He also introduced the achievements of the Gavi vaccine alliance and the Global Fund in curbing such diseases as HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, expressing hope for South Korea's increased contribution to global health initiatives.
​
Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, was visiting South Korea to explore cooperation with Korean pharmaceutical companies on vaccine supply projects for low-income countries.
​
In addition to the health issues, Lee and Gates exchanged opinions about advanced industries, including artificial intelligence and small modular reactors (SMR), a type of advanced reactor designed for modular installation.
​
Gates, the founder of SMR developer TerraPower, said SMRs could serve as an effective solution to meet rising power demand in advanced industries such as AI and semiconductors, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung told reporters.
​
Lee noted that his government is interested in building next-generation nuclear power plants and highlighted the capabilities of Korean companies in the field, as well as their growing presence in overseas markets.
​
During the talks, Gates also wished Lee to have a good discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump in their planned summit next week, and Lee responded he will engage in the talks "wisely" though it would be challenging, according to Kang.

Separately, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok also held a luncheon meeting with Gates, during which Kim said South Korea and the Gates Foundation could create synergy by bringing together the strong capabilities of South Korean biotech companies with the foundation's global network.

Gates highly assessed South Korea's advanced vaccine manufacturing capacity and said the foundation will actively share its expertise and experiences to help South Korean firms expand into global markets.

이재명 대통령이 빌 게이츠 게이츠재단 이사장과 만났습니다.

이 대통령은 게이츠 이사장의 공익 활동에 경의를 표했는데요, 게이츠 이사장도 백신 공급을 포함한 글로벌 보건 협력 확대를 희망한다고 밝혔습니다.

김민아 기자입니다.

3년 만에 한국을 찾은 마이크로소프트 창업자, 빌 게이츠 게이츠재단 이사장.

첫 일정으로 이 대통령을 접견하고 글로벌 보건, 소형 원자력 모듈 SMR 협력 방안을 논의했습니다.

이 대통령은 게이츠 이사장이 '소프트웨어 혁신'을 이룩한 데 이어 새로운 공공재 창출에 기여한 점을 높이 샀고, 게이츠 이사장은 한국의 바이오산업을 긍정적으로 평가했습니다.

<이재명/대통령> "지구와 지구인 전체를 위한 공공적 활동에 대해서 경의를 표하고, 대한민국 정부도 함께할 방법을 최대한 찾아보겠습니다."

<빌 게이츠/게이츠재단 이사장> "한국의 바이오사이언스 제품들은 경이로운 수준입니다. 특히 코로나 백신이나 진단 기기 등이 좋은 역할을 했습니다."

게이츠 이사장이 이 자리에서 이 대통령의 방미를 언급하며 "트럼프 대통령과 대화를 잘 나누시라"고 덕담을 건네자, 이 대통령은 "어렵겠지만 슬기롭게 잘 하겠다"고 답하기도 했습니다.

같은 날 김민석 국무총리, 우원식 국회의장도 게이츠 이사장과 회동했습니다.

김 총리는 "한국 바이오 기업의 역량과 게이츠재단의 네트워크를 합치면 시너지 효과를 낼 수 있을 것"이라고 말했고, 우 의장은 "국제 보건 협력을 위한 초당적 의지가 확고하다"고 했습니다.

게이츠 이사장은 기자간담회도 열고 수원국에서 이젠 공여국이 된 한국의 역할을 강조했습니다.

<빌 게이츠/게이츠 재단 이사장> "(한국의) ODA 예산이 국민총소득의 0.3%가 안되는 수준입니다. 이상적인 선진국의 ODA 예산 비율은 0.7% 정도입니다."

게이츠 이사장은 한국의 ODA 예산이 증가하길 바란다며 "앞으로 5년 내 0.5%까지는 달성할 수 있을 것이라 생각한다"고 말했습니다.
