Galatians 3:17–20 (KJV)
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

God told Abraham that blessings come through faith. Abraham confirmed his faith by obeying God's word. He is the father of faith who demonstrated that blessings are received through faith. Since Adam, all human beings have been born as sinners. Nevertheless, like Abraham, we receive God's blessings through faith.
God taught Abraham the principle of faith. Then, 430 years later, when the Israelites came out of Egypt, God gave them the Law through angels. Through this event, Scripture teaches us that the principle of faith was established before the Law, and the Law cannot nullify the promise of faith.
God's purpose in giving the Law to humanity was to clearly reveal human sin, lead people to recognize and repent of their sins, and bring them to salvation. Every sin makes human beings enemies of God, who is the source of blessings and salvation. Therefore, God's people must cleanse themselves of sin through repentance. The Ten Commandments serve as the standard by which we recognize our sins and repent of them thoroughly.
The Israelites recognized their sins through the Ten Commandments and received forgiveness through sacrificial offerings involving the sprinkling of animal blood. Even today, the Ten Commandments fundamentally reveal our sins. Through them, we recognize our sins, repent, and receive forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ.
However, the gospel of Jesus reveals even more clearly the sins hidden deep within the human heart. We must repent not only of our outward actions but also of every sin concealed within our hearts, so that we may receive salvation.
During the Old Testament era, the Holy Spirit had not yet come in the same way as He did at Pentecost in the New Testament. The people of that time did not experience the indwelling presence and help of the Holy Spirit as believers do today. Therefore, God taught them the Law with an emphasis on their outward actions.
But now the Holy Spirit helps us. Our outward actions are important. However, our hearts, from which all our actions originate, are even more important.
Sin begins in the heart and then manifests itself through our actions. Therefore, we must repent not only of our outward sins but also of the sins hidden within our hearts.
We must sincerely believe in Jesus Christ, repent of our sins, and obey God's Word. This is the living faith that God desires.
