SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung returned home Thursday after a six-day trip to the United States and Japan for high-stakes summit talks with U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

Lee held his first in-person meeting with Trump in Washington on Monday during which they converged on the need to resume diplomacy with North Korea while pledging to work together to revitalize America's shipbuilding industry -- a sector that the Trump administration is keen to shore up amid its intensifying rivalry with China.

Lee voiced support for Trump's pursuit of dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, urging him to play a role as a "peacemaker" on the divided Korean Peninsula while pledging to play his own part as a "pacemaker" in a convincing tone.

Still, sensitive issues, including "alliance modernization" between Seoul and Washington and trade in the rice and beef markets, were not publicly discussed.

Ahead of his visit to Washington, Lee stopped in Tokyo to hold his first full summit with Ishiba and discussed ways to advance bilateral ties through "shuttle diplomacy" and issued the first Seoul-Tokyo joint summit statement in 17 years.
​
National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said Lee built personal rapport with the leaders in the back-to-back summits, which laid the groundwork for closer ties with Tokyo and advancing trilateral cooperation with Washington.

(서울=뉴스1) 심언기 기자 = 이재명 대통령이 취임 후 첫 양자외교 무대인 일본·미국 순방 일정을 마치고 28일 귀국했다.

대통령실에 따르면 이 대통령은 이날 오전 1시 32분쯤 공군1호기를 통해 성남공항에 도착했다. 지난 23일 오전 첫 순방국인 일본으로 출국한지 나흘 만이다.

이 대통령은 3박 6일 순방 기간 한일 셔틀외교를 복원하고 도널드 트럼프 대통령과 정상회담 등에서 적지 않은 성과를 거둔 것으로 평가받는다.

김민석 국무총리를 비롯해 윤호중 행정안전부 장관과 함께 더불어민주당 정청래 대표, 김병기 원내대표가 성남공항에서 이 대통령의 귀국을 환영했다. 대통령실에선 우상호 정무수석과 김병욱 정무비서관이 맞이했다.

이 대통령과 김혜경 여사가 공군 1호기 출입문을 나서자 참석자들은 큰 박수로 순방 성과를 자축하면서 무사 귀국을 환영했다.

김 총리가 가장 먼저 이 대통령을 맞이했고 윤호중 장관은 "잘 하고 오셨습니까"라고 인사를 건넸다. 정청래 대표는 이 대통령과 악수하면서 "압도적(성과)"라며 순방 결과를 추켜세우기도 했다.
