갈라디아서 4:1-5 내가 또 말하노니 유업을 이을 자가 모든 것의 주인이나 어렸을 동안에는 종과 다름이 없어서 그 아버지의 정한 때까지 후견인과 청지기 아래 있나니 이와 같이 우리도 어렸을 때에 이 세상 초등 학문 아래 있어서 종노릇 하였더니 때가 차매 하나님이 그 아들을 보내사 여자에게서 나게 하시고 율법 아래 나게 하신 것은 율법 아래 있는 자들을 속량하시고 우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라

자녀는 부모의 재산을 상속받습니다. 그러나 아직 어릴 때에는 곧바로 재산을 넘겨받지 못하고, 부모가 정한 때까지 기다려야 합니다. 어린 자녀는 종과 다름없는 처지에 있습니다. 그래서 부모는 그를 후견인과 청지기 아래 두어 교육하고 훈련시킵니다.

첫 인간이 죄를 지었을 때, 예수님께서 곧바로 세상에 오셔서 십자가에서 죽으신 것은 아닙니다. 하나님께서는 먼저 자신의 백성을 율법 아래 두어 오랜 기간 훈련시키셨습니다. 오늘날에도 신앙생활을 시작한 날 곧바로 성령을 받는 것은 아닙니다. 먼저 율법을 통해 자신의 죄가 무엇인지 깨닫게 됩니다.

성경을 통해 예수님이 누구신지 배우고, 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지 배웁니다. 인간이 창조된 목적을 배우며, 죄를 회개하고 예수님의 말씀에 순종해야 한다는 것을 배웁니다. 그러나 지식으로만 알아서는 그 말씀을 실천할 능력이 없습니다. 율법을 통해 자신의 죄를 깨닫고 회개할 때 성령을 받습니다. 성령을 받은 후에는 자원하는 마음이 생겨 하나님과 이웃을 섬기게 됩니다.

율법은 예수님을 만나도록 이끄는 첫 단계입니다. 성령을 받으면 더 이상 율법 아래 있지 않습니다. 우리가 죄를 지으면 율법이 지적하기 전에 성령께서 먼저 우리의 죄를 깨닫게 하시고 회개하도록 이끄십니다. 성령께서는 율법보다 더 세밀하게 가르치시며, 우리가 사랑의 길을 걷도록 인도하십니다.

Galatians 4:1-5

"What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.

Children inherit their parents' wealth. However, while they are still young, they do not receive the property immediately and must wait until the time set by their parents. Young children are in a position no different from that of a servant. Therefore, parents place them under guardians and stewards to educate and train them.

When the first human sinned, Jesus did not come into the world immediately to die on the cross. God first placed His people under the law to train them for a long period. Even today, we do not receive the Holy Spirit the very day we begin our life of faith. First, through the law, we come to realize what our sins are.

Through the Bible, we learn who Jesus is and what God's will is. We learn the purpose for which humans were created, and that we must repent of our sins and obey Jesus' words. However, knowing these things merely as knowledge does not give us the ability to put those words into practice. When we realize our sin through the law and repent, we receive the Holy Spirit. After receiving the Holy Spirit, a willing heart arises within us to serve God and our neighbors.

The law is the first step that leads us to meet Jesus. Once we receive the Holy Spirit, we are no longer under the law. When we commit a sin, before the law points it out, the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin first and leads us to repentance. The Holy Spirit teaches us more meticulously than the law and guides us to walk the path of love.
