Galatians 4:21–26
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise. These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.

Even within the same church, there are those who live under the law and those who live in the gospel. Paul explained this figuratively through Abraham’s two sons. Abraham had two sons: Ishmael, who was born to Hagar, the slave woman, and Isaac, who was born to Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
Ishmael, the son of Hagar, was born according to human reasoning because they did not wait for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Isaac, on the other hand, was born according to God’s promise. God had clearly promised Abraham that He would give him a son. However, Abraham and Sarah did not wait patiently until God’s appointed time.
Unable to wait for God’s timing and promise, they followed human reasoning and had a son through the slave woman. As a result, much trouble arose in their family. The lesson given to us through this event is clear: Human reasoning can never take the place of God’s will.
Through the law, we recognize our sins and repent, and through the blood of Jesus Christ our sins are cleansed and we are saved. This is the only way of salvation. Those who depart from this way and try to be saved by keeping the law will ultimately fail. Outwardly, they may appear relatively clean, but they cannot escape the sin and uncleanness within their hearts.
Those who live under the law merely observe religious forms while failing to deal with the sins of their hearts. Because they do not fully believe the promise of salvation given by the Lord and instead place human reasoning before God, they gradually drift farther away from the Lord. In the end, they live with a false faith and perish.
Do not live according to man-made doctrines or legalism. We must become like Jesus Christ in heart. Always strive to love others and forgive them. Repent of every sin and rely on the blood of Jesus. This is the only way of salvation that the Lord has given us.
Christians who do not follow this way remain in the position of slaves, like the son of the slave woman. Strive to live a life of love. Repent whenever you have failed to love. Believe and obey the Word of the Lord, practice love, and walk with the Holy Spirit.
Those who believe and live in this way are not like the son of the slave woman, but like Isaac, the son of promise, living according to God’s promise. This passage is not speaking about one’s physical ancestry. It is speaking about true faith and false faith. If you believe in Jesus according to human reasoning rather than according to God’s Word, you will ultimately be rejected.
