[미술여행=김예은 기자]SPACE776 Seoul(서울특별시 강남구 압구정로79길 62 1층)이 오는 2026년 4월 10일(금)부터 5월 10일(일)까지 일본 작가 Tomotoshi Hoshino의 개인전을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 일본 전통 회화의 정신을 현대적 감각으로 확장해 온 Hoshino의 작업 세계를 조명하며, 동양 회화의 깊은 정신성과 현대 회화의 조형적 언어가 교차하는 지점을 탐구한다.

SPACE776 Seoul is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Tomotoshi Hoshino, on view from April 10 to May 10, 2026.This exhibition highlights Hoshino’s distinctive practice, which expands the spirit of traditional Japanese painting into a contemporary visual language. It explores the intersection where the profound sensibility of Eastern painting meets the formal vocabulary of modern art. Hoshino’s work captures everyday scenes and human figures through a refined and restrained visual language, investigating the subtle boundary between reality and the inner world. Rather than conveying direct narratives, the figures and objects in his paintings function as devices that suggest emotional space and the passage of time. The quiet moments depicted on canvas invite viewers to engage with their own memories and emotional experiences, revealing the poetic depth embedded within ordinary life.

His paintings are particularly defined by delicate layers of color and carefully controlled compositions that create a subtle yet palpable tension. Transmit Studio(일본/스웨덴)와 Space 776(뉴욕/서울)은 일본화가 호시노 토모토시의 개인전 Invisible Threads 를 서울에서 개최한다. 이번 전시는 양 기관의 국제 협력을 통해 실현되었으며, 동아시아 지역에서 새로운 문화 교류와 예술적 대화를 촉진하는 것을 목표로 한다.

호시노 토모토시(1961 년 도쿄 출생)는 일본을 대표하는 미술 단체인 일본미술원(인텐, Inten)의 특대 작가로 활동하고 있는 일본화가다. 14 세에 일본화를 접한 이후 그 길을 걷기 시작했으며, 모리타 코헤이에게 사사했다. 1987 년 인텐전에 첫 입선한 이후, 국내외에서 활발한 전시 활동을 이어오고 있으며 일본바시 다카시마야, 파리, 뉴욕, 오슬로 등에서 개인전을 개최했다.

그의 작품은 오미시마 미술관에 소장되어 있다. 호시노의 작업은 일본화의 전통적인 재료와 기법을 기반으로 하면서, 시간, 기억, 자연과 인간의 관계와 같은 비가시적 개념을 섬세하게 표현하는 것이 특징이다. 전시 제목 Invisible Threads 는 과거와 현재, 인간과 자연, 그리고 서로 다른 문화와 장소를 잇는 보이지 않는 관계를 의미한다.

Space 776 은 2015 년 뉴욕에서 설립되어 다양한 세대와 국적의 작가들을 지원해왔다. 지금까지 60 회 이상의 국제 아트페어에 참여하며 전 세계 미술 기관 및 컬렉터들과의 네트워크를 구축해왔으며, 2024 년에는 서울에 새로운 공간을 개관하며 활동 범위를 확장하고 있다.

Transmit Studio 는 2023 년에 설립된 국제 아트 프로젝트로, 일본과 스웨덴을 기반으로 활동하며, 호시노 토모토시의 매니지먼트를 담당하고 있다. 마이애미와 바젤 등 주요 아트페어 참가와 건축 및 공간 프로젝트를 통해 작가의 국제적 활동을 적극적으로 지원하고 있다. 이번 전시는 두 기관의 협업을 통해 문화 간 대화를 확장하고, 호시노 토모토시의 작품을 국제적인 맥락 속에서 새롭게 조명하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다

Invisible ThreadsTransmit Studio (Japan / Sweden) and Space 776 (New York / Seoul) are pleased to present Invisible Threads, a solo exhibition by Japanese painter Tomotoshi Hoshino in Seoul. This exhibition is realized through an international collaboration between the two organizations, aiming to foster new cultural exchange and artistic dialogue in East Asia.Tomotoshi Hoshino (b. 1961, Tokyo) is a distinguished Nihonga painter and a specially selected member of the Japan Art Institute (Inten), one of Japan’s most prestigious art organizations. He encountered Japanese painting at the age of 14 and later studied under Kōhei Morita. Since his first acceptance to the Inten Exhibition in 1987, he has continued to exhibit extensively both in Japan and internationally. His solo exhibitions have been held in venues such as Nihombashi Takashimaya (Tokyo), as well as in Paris, New York, and Oslo. His works are included in the collection of the Omishima Museum of Art.

Hoshino’s practice is rooted in traditional Nihonga materials and techniques, while exploring intangible themes such as time, memory, and the relationship between humans and nature. The title Invisible Threads refers to the unseen connections that link past and present, people and environment, and different cultures and places. Founded in New York in 2015, Space 776 has supported a diverse range of artists across generations and disciplines. The gallery has participated in over 60 international art fairs and maintains strong relationships with institutions and collectors worldwide. In 2024, Space 776 expanded its presence with a new location in Seoul, further strengthening its global engagement.

Transmit Studio, founded in 2023, is an international art project based between Japan and Sweden, and represents Tomotoshi Hoshino. Through participation in major art fairs such as those in Miami and Basel, as well as interdisciplinary projects including architectural collaborations, Transmit Studio supports artists in expanding their international presence.Through this collaboration, Invisible Threads seeks to create new opportunities for crosscultural dialogue and to present Hoshino’s work with
