This seated Buddha, carved in relief, sits in a niche hewn out of a massive piece of rock. An octagonal capstone fitted over the head protects the face, so the statue remains in good condition. A gentle smile brightens the rigid face, which is characterized by a large nose and long ears. The hands are in the position of fearlessness. The stout body, which is rigid and angular, has a slim waist and arms. A robe is draped over the left shoulder and the right shoulder is bare. The folds over the left arm are of special note as they are carved in vertical, parallel lines, giving an abstract air to the sculpture. The statue is standing on a lotus pedestal, which has petals facing both up and down and is in perfect harmony with the statue. This traditional statue of magnificent size with its hint of the abstract is highly valued. It is one of the best examples of early Goryeo Period (918-1392) Buddhist art. Of course, the statue is also greatly venerated by Buddhists. |
