The Connection of the Mind, Body, and Spirit
--‐-
There is a beautiful, deep interconnectedness of the human mind, body, and spirit that is often overlooked.
There are many people who, if asked to share their thoughts on the human mind, and how it connects to or influences the human body, consider the two to be separate.
This is not to say that they would argue they are entirely separate; many people recognize the clear ways the mind influences the body, and vise versa.
Mental state is often linked to motivation, and a more positive mindset usually comes with higher levels of motivation and more energy within the body to be productive.
On the contrary, getting fresh air and exercising regularly has been proven to not only have physical benefits, but also to improve mental health.
Though these two examples demonstrate how much influence the mind and body have on each other, the connection is much stronger and deeper than it first appears.
The connection runs deep, all the way to the human spirit itself, and the three—the mind, spirit, and body—are all thoroughly intertwined with one another, constantly working together as parts of a whole.
There is something remarkable to be said about the power of the human spirit. As a general description, the human spirit encompasses what makes up one’s core being: their essence, their inner strength, their will and desire, their reason for being.
To visualize the human spirit, one could imagine an ever-burning flame that makes up the core of one’s self.
The flame burns brighter and stronger in times of passion, and it burns fainter and weaker in times of despair. Many a time, in many a context, the human spirit has proven itself to be indomitable.
Whether in times of war, where people fight for their lives with every fiber of their being; in everyday life, when times are tough, or things keep going wrong, where people persevere and keep doing their best; in times of failure, whether small or monumental, where people have the strength to move on and try again; the human spirit time and time again has proven its strength to overcome.
(Even in the lore of fantasy games that have fantastical races, humans are often regarded as the most resilient race.)
Some would argue that a strong spirit that refuses to accept defeat can overcome any obstacle.
How, then, does one’s spirit simply “burning brightly” or refusing defeat or failure allow one to overcome physical obstacles?
The spirit is often thought to be connected to the mind, or considered to be part of the mind, more than it is the body.
The truth is, there are limits; one cannot simply convince themselves they are able to pick up a car, then proceed to lift a car because they “believed they could.”
But the other truth is that the spirit is deeply connected to the mind and body.
The three work together as part of a larger whole, all strongly influencing one another.
And when they synchronize together and their objectives align, humans achieve wonderful things.
This could be as mundane as meeting a deadline at work; to an individual, it may be important or even critical that the deadline is made.
Then, even in the face of obstacles or hinderances, the willpower and desire to meet the deadline, no matter what, allows one to be more productive than they otherwise could be.
But this willpower and strength also extends to the physical body. This is most commonly seen in dangerous situations, or when someone’s—or especially a loved one’s—life is in danger.
To take some examples from viral internet videos and news stories: when a baby begins to fall off of the couch, the nearby father without hesitation springs into action; when a child falls through a misplaced manhole cover, the mother finds the strength to move the manhole cover out of the way and rescue her child.
In both these examples, one’s spirit, with the deep-rooted desire to protect loved ones, and the mindset to succeed heighten people’s physical abilities.
Concepts of failure get pushed aside, while the raw desire to succeed becomes forefront, and the mind, body, and spirit align, working together in tandem with a clear goal in mind. In this state, the deep connections between the three are clear.
This deep connection influences the human body as a whole, extending its influence to much more. A major role this connection plays in life is its influence on illness, injury, and the body and mind’s recovery from them.
Since the mental and physical are often thought of as separate, the power that the human spirit and mind have over physical illness and injury is often overlooked—sometimes even missed out on entirely.
Through readings, stories I have been told, and personal experiences, I have come to understand that the mind and spirit are just as powerful as the physical body when it comes to recovery from illness.
Those with a strong mindset and an indomitable spirit—the pure belief at the spiritual level to overcome an illness or heal from an injury, the unwavering determination to remain stronger than the illness or injury, and the refusal to let the illness or injury be the one to triumph—more often than not tend to recover faster from both injury and illness.
And though not all illness and injury can be overcome, when the mind, body, and spirit align with the desire to be indomitable, the power one gains over illness and injury is immense, and their ability to endure and recover increases substantially.
The negative physical impacts of small, short-term illness and injury such as the common cold or a strained muscle, can be greatly negated with the power of the mind and spirit.
Though not always able to fully heal from, serious illness—such as cancer—and serious injury—such as broken bones or loss of limb—can be significantly influenced by the human mind and spirit.
Many cancer patients persevere through horrible, difficult-to-bear treatments, with a mindset to never give up and the refusal to let the cancer beat them, doing everything in their power to overcome it.
Many of those who have lived through serious injury have similar mindsets, that they will not let their injury hinder them in life, and that they will continue to do the things they love and enjoy, even if they must work around limitations.
These strong desires and unwavering resolve stem from their spirit deep within and have a large positive impact on people’s physical and mental health and their ability to recover.
These are some of many concrete examples that demonstrate just how far-reaching the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit is; and from these examples, as well as many others, it can be inferred that this deep connection contributes directly to one’s overall well-being.
The mind, body, and spirit all work together, all influencing one another as part of a larger whole—one’s self.
An indomitable spirit and a strong mindset help keep one’s physical self healthy, energized, and able. In turn, a healthy physical lifestyle helps one keep a healthy mindset, including things such as having a positive attitude, staying motivated, and being productive.
By extension of this, there are all-round benefits to being sincere, kind, and free of anger.
By remaining honest to others and to one’s self, by being genuine, and by avoiding hypocrisy, one can live without the weights of regret, dishonesty, and insincerity.
By being kind to others, one can be content with themselves, knowing they have positively impacted others, and by extension, the world around them. By being free of anger, one frees themself from tension and stress—both of which having negative mental and physical effects—and opens one’s self up to peace of mind and spirit.
The benefits to one’s well-being are significant and have a long-lasting positive impact on their quality of life.
The connection of the mind, body, and spirit is always present, but it is often experienced unconsciously.
Learning how they influence each other and interact, how it feels when they align, and even how to consciously align them is a way to experience their positive benefits and further improve one’s quality of life.
Martial arts is one way in which people train and learn to feel this connection.
Studying martial arts involves having an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a desire to continuously improve one’s self.
Through training, people often seek to calm their mind and seek inner peace—such as through meditation—and to develop their skills over time—such as through practicing martial arts forms and techniques.
Over time, one may seek to be the best version of themselves, while learning through training the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit, and how they all work together and form one’s self.
Learning how these all interact; being kind, sincere, and honest to others and to one’s self; and striving for inner peace, self-improvement, and contentedness; all improve one’s life.
With Kimu training, one can more easily feel the natural flow of the universe’s energy.
The universe has something that is often referred to as the “invisible world,” where nature and the universe’s energy flow freely.
As the name suggests, it cannot be seen or felt directly—our five senses cannot directly interact with this world. However, it can be felt in another way, or simply experienced, by calming the mind, relaxing the body, and letting one’s senses relax.
Kimu training allows one to practice this. It encourages the mind, body, and spirit to flow freely and effortlessly, guided by natural flows of energy.
It allows one to experience the flow of energy from the invisible world, a feeling in practice similar to a gentle current.
To achieve this, one must fully relax the body and mind, free of any tension, relaxing all thoughts and muscles; and from the spirit, one must accept the energy and let it guide them.
From here, there is less of a thought to move physically—that is, to move in the usual sense of tensing one’s arm muscles to move their arm in front of them, or tensing one’s leg and core muscles to move their body around.
There is a more raw, pure thought, from the spirit, like a subconscious idea that one wants to move their arm forward, or to move their body in a direction.
This almost effortless idea of moving allows the spirit, body, and mind to align with natural flows of energy, and once aligned, energy will guide the spirit, mind, and body to the destination.
This movement follows purely natural movement, and movement becomes fluid and effortless, while one can stay relaxed and at peace.
Thus, through martial arts training, including Kimu training, one can live a healthier life. Maintaining a relaxed spirit helps maintain a relaxed mind and body, helping people to be free of worry.
Through connection to the invisible world and nature’s flows of energy, one can experience the calm, gentle embrace of nature.
For some, this may be comforting or reassuring—that they are part of the world, they are part of nature, and that they are able to flow with nature.
Meditative practices and training such as these can help keep one’s mind and spirit at peace.
And as the mind, body, and spirit are all deeply connected, both the mental and physical benefits influence and build off of each other, resulting in a higher quality life that one can enjoy to their fullest.

Jack Wheaton

Jack Wheaton

Jack’s essay shows a sincere and thoughtful understanding that the mind, body, and spirit are not separate, but continuously influence one another as parts of one whole.
I especially appreciate his connection between martial arts training and the development of sincerity, kindness, honesty, and freedom from anger. The ultimate purpose of martial arts is not simply to develop stronger techniques. It is to cultivate a person whose thoughts, actions, and way of life move toward greater balance and harmony.
His explanation of Kimu training also approaches an important principle of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu: Follow the Energy. However, this cannot be fully understood through thought or words alone. The body must first become relaxed, the mind must become quiet, and personal force and intention must gradually be released. Then natural movement can begin to reveal itself through direct experience.
A strong mind and spirit can support endurance, treatment, and recovery, but they should always work together with proper medical care. True training does not reject physical reality. It helps us understand it more clearly and respond to it wisely.
I hope Jack continues to explore this connection through breathing, relaxation, movement, and sincere daily practice. When the mind, body, and spirit become aligned with the natural flow of energy, martial arts develops beyond technique and becomes a path toward healing, inner peace, and a better life.
