보니 레이트가 노래하는 걸 처음 들었을 때를 기억할 수 있는가? 나도 기억이 안난다. 내가 그때 어디에 있었는지, 몇살이었는지 기억나지 않는다. 하지만 내가 기억할 수 있는 건 그녀가 지미 웹의 서사시 '몽고메리에서 온 천사 Angel from Montgomery'를 부르는 것을 처음 들었을 때의 느낌이다. 움직일 수가 없었다. 분명 곡을 쓰거나 기타를 연주하거나 피아노를 연주하는 능력에 대해 평가는 있기 마련이다. 이 점에 치중해서 뛰어난 가창력을 간과하기 쉽다. 하지만 곡을 쓰면서 노래도 잘하는 아티스트는 어떠한가? 프리실라 안은 할 수 있다. 그녀는 나를 움직일 수 없게 만든다. 마치 보니 레이트처럼.

목요일 밤 헐리우드의 호텔카페에는 사람들이 꽤 타이트하게 차있었다. 사람들은 나란히 서서 사랑스러운 펜실베니아 출신 포크 가수가 무대에 오르기를 참을성있게 기다리고 있었다. 공연장이 꽉 찬 것은 우연이 아니었다. 그들은 모두 프리실라를 보기 위해 거기 모인 것이다. 어떤 이들은 베테랑 팬이었고 또 다른 이들은 이 소동이 무엇 때문인지 보기 위해 로스엔젤레스 전역에서 모여든 사람들이었다. 결국 그들은 알게됐다. 이 '소동'은 라디오나 뮤직비디오나 텔레비전 출연으로 만들어지고 유지된 것이 아니다. 이것은 진짜 '소동'이다. 친밀하고도 흥미로운 공연과 입소문이 지속적으로 만들어낸 소동이다. 오, 프리실라는 보기에도 편안하다. 이 점도 단점일 수는 없다.

프리실라는 많은 젊은 여성 송라이터들이 노래하는 것들을 노래한다. 어린시절의 기억, 남자들, 상심 등. 프리실라의 음악에서 가장 매력적인 특징은 그녀의 목소리다. 결점이 없으며 격하게 아름답다. 그녀는 이 점을 꽤 효과적으로 보여준다. 하지만 그 이상이 있다. 그녀는 다재다능하다. 어쿠스틱 기타에서 일렉트릭 베이스, 하모니카까지, 프리실라는 화날정도로 재능있다. 자그마한 카주도 연주한다! 게다가 그녀는 샘플링 페달에도 능숙해서 그녀 자신의 숨막히는 하모니를 겹겹으로 더할 줄도 안다. 대단하다!

당신은 어느 목요일 밤 로스앤젤레스에서 작은 클럽에 머리를 들이밀고 여성 포크 가수를 볼 수 있다. 그런 가수들은 흔해빠졌다. 그렇기에 방안 가득찬 사람들을 진실로 매혹할 줄 아는 사람을 마주치는 것은 새로운 일이다. 프리실라는 너무나 귀엽고 너무나 매력적이다. 보기에도 즐겁다. 그녀의 귀여움과 매력은 그녀의 재능을 깎아내리는 말로 간주되어서는 안된다. 그점들은 그녀를 더 돋보이게 한다. 프리실라의 목소리, 노래, 카주, 귀여움, 매력들 속에서 그녀는 완전 잊을 수 없는 공연을 보여주었다. 그녀는 환상적인 밴드를 갖고 있으며 그들의 기량과 연주솜씨는 공연의 아름다움에 큰 보탬이 되었다. 프리실라와 그녀의 밴드는  그녀의 새로 나올 데뷔 앨범에서 몇곡과 앨범에 실리지 않은 "가슴 Boobs"이라는 노래를 연주했다. 목요일 밤 호텔카페에서의 프리실라 안의 공연은 완벽하진 않았다. 완벽하게 안-완벽했다. 기타연주에 실수가 꽤 있었고 리듬악기가 없었던 것이다. LA의 힙스터들이 잠깐 담배를 피우러 밖으로 나가지 못하게 막기에는 딱 충분한 정도였다. 그녀는 뛰어난 젊은 퍼포머이며, 젊든 나이가 많든 공연장에 가득한 사람들의 주의를 45분 동안 꼭 붙들어맬 수 있다.

Can you remember the first time you heard Bonnie Raitt sing? I can’t either. I can’t remember where I was or how old I was, but what I can remember is how I felt the first time I heard her sing Jimmy Webb’s epic ‘Angel from Montgomery’: motionless. There is quite a bit of stock placed in one’s ability to write songs or play guitar or play the piano. So much so that it’s easy to overlook a great vocal talent. But what about the artist who writes songs and sings them well too? Priscilla Ahn can do that. She makes me feel motionless, just like Bonnie Raitt.

People were packed in pretty tight Thursday night at Hollywood’s Hotel Café. They stood there shoulder to shoulder waiting patiently for the adorable Pennsylvanian folk singer to take the stage. The crowded room wasn’t accidental; they were all there to see Priscilla. Some were veteran fans, while others came from all over Los Angeles to see what all the fuss was about. In the end, they figured it out. This ‘fuss’ isn’t anything created or perpetuated by radio or music videos or television appearances—it’s a bona fide buzz. It’s a buzz created by consistently intimate, intriguing performances and word of mouth. Oh, Priscilla is also pretty easy on the eyes—and that can't hurt.

Priscilla sings about the same things many young female songwriters sing about: fond memories of childhood, boys, broken hearts, etc. The most desirable feature of Priscilla’s music is her voice: it’s impeccable and intensely beautiful. She executes this element of the format quite effectively. But there’s more: she’s versatile. From acoustic guitar, to electric bass, to harmonica, Priscilla is angeringly talented. Also, she plays a pretty mean kazoo! Beyond that, she’s damn handy with her sampling pedals, which allow her to add layer upon layer of her own breathtaking harmonies—pretty impressive!

You can pop your head into any small club on any given Thursday night in Los Angeles and see a female folk singer, those are a dime a dozen. So it’s refreshing to stumble upon on one who can genuinely captivate a room full of people. Priscilla’s so damn cute, and so damn charming—she’s a joy to watch. Her cuteness and her charm ought not be viewed as comments meant to trivialize her craft, they’re enhancements. Between Priscilla’s voice, her songs, her kazoo, her cuteness, and her charm, she put on an entirely memorable show. She’s got a fantastic band too, their proficiency and musicianship added a great deal to the aesthetic. Priscilla and her band played a handful of tunes from her upcoming debut album and one song that didn’t make the record: "Boobs." Priscilla Ahn’s show at the Hotel Café on Thursday wasn’t perfect, it was perfectly un-perfect. There was plenty of sloppy guitar work and out-of-pocket rhythm—just enough to keep the L.A. hipsters from heading outside for a quick smoke. She’s a fine young performer who kept the attention of an entire room of people, young and old, for a solid forty-five minutes.
