원래 저는 2009년도에 입학을 하기 위해 맨하탄 음대 시험을 친 적이 있습니다. 그러나 실패했지요.
급하게 준비하면 미처 돌아보지 못한 부분, 실수하는 부분이 생긴답니다.
이 기회를 빌어 미국 음대 유학준비를 하면 어떤 메일들을 받게 되는지도 알려드릴 겸
어떤 순서로 입시가 진행되었는지 학교에서 보낸 메일들과 함께 설명드리겠습니다.
원문 번역은 대충 했습니다.
1. 1차 시험 준비 : Pre-screening
학교마다 조금씩 다르지만 요구하는 서류는 비슷합니다.

많은 메이저 음대는 Pre-screening을 받습니다. 그래서 1차부터 직접 가서 시험을 치는 것이 아니라 CD를 녹음해서 보내고, 거기서 합격이 되면 2차시험을 보러 오라고 메일을 줍니다. 저는 11월 중순경 압구정 세실아트홀을 1시간 빌려서 녹음했습니다.
다음은 맨하탄음대에서 제가 보낸 CD를 받았다는 내용의 E메일입니다.
Greetings from Manhattan School of Music! I am happy to report that your prescreen CD has been received, and that we will begin prescreening very shortly. At this time we are unable to check on recommendations or transcripts (both of which are not due until February 1, 2009), but you can rest assured that your online application and your prescreen cd are in our hands. We will be in touch again in the coming weeks with the results of the prescreening round (results should go out by December 20th). If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call or email us.

For DMA applicants: The written exam will be given on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Personal interviews will be scheduled with Dr. Langford when you arrive at MSM for the exam for either Wednesday afternoon, March 4 or on Thursday, March 5. If your audition is prior to the exam, you will be notified no later than Tuesday evening, March 3, whether you passed the audition and need to be available for the exam and interview. If your audition is after the exam, please report for the exam on Wednesday.

These accompanists have indicated their familiarity with standard audition repertoire; however, they would need significant advance notice for non-standard works. If you are performing contemporary or unusual repertoire, the accompanists ask that you contact them in advance of the audition so that they may review the music.
Important: You must provide scores for your accompanist. If using photocopies, make sure they are securely placed in a binder so that it will be easy for your accompanist to turn the pages at your audition. There will be no page turner.

그러나, 저에게는 문제가 있었습니다. 12월 중순부터 메일확인을 하지 않았다는 거죠.
그러니까 2차시험 합격했다는 통보 메일 자체를 2월이 넘어서야 본 겁니다.
그리고 전 그때 대학합창단 유럽순회연주 때문에 영국에 있었습니다.
어떻게 할 수 없는 상황이라 지금까지 받은 메일들은 선생님과 부모님께 보냈고
뉴저지 사는 이모님을 통해 늦게나마 2차시험을 등록하겠다는 의지를 밝혔습니다.
그리하여, 2월 21일 한국으로 귀국한 저는 23일 다시 미국으로 출국, 메일에 적힌대로 2월 27일 시험을 보게 되었습니다.
딕션 테스트는 최악이었습니다. 4개국어(영,불,독,이)로 된 노래 가사들의 IPA를 적고 해석하라는 것이었죠.
물론 영어는 해석 안해도 됩니다. 그러니까...예를 들어 독일어 시험은 An die musik이 나왔습니다.

Thank you for applying to Manhattan School of Music. The faculty was favorably impressed with the high level of your performance during our auditions. However, the department to which you applied had a very small number of openings this year and we had to establish a waitlist. This letter is to advise you that you have been placed on the Classical Voice - Tenor Department waitlist. You are 1 out of 3 for Masters-level Tenors. Please also be aware that if you decide to remain on the waitlist and wish to be considered for admission at a later date, you must send your Official TOEFL Score immediately.
You will be notified of your final admission status beginning on or about June 1, 2009. I realize that you have most likely applied to other schools that will want to know your decision for their school by the May 1st deadline. The deadline for confirming/declining your acceptance is quickly approaching (as a reminder, the deadline is April 15th for graduate students and May 1st for undergraduate students). In order to alleviate any confusion, here is some information on how to pay your $500 confirmation fee: You may pay using a personal check, money order, cash (in person only?please do not send cash in the mail!) or credit card (using the attached credit card form)Checks should be made payable to: Manhattan School of Music
· All payment should be sent along with your signed “Intent to Enroll Form” (located at the bottom of your acceptance email to us at: Manhattan School of Music, Office of Admission, 120 Claremont Ave., New York, NY 10027

I am writing to ask you if you could please let me know your decision on whether you will be enrolling at MSM in September.
The graduate deadline to respond was April 15th, and while I realize that some students have requested extensions, many others have not. In order for me to know what the graduate class will look like, I need to have answers from all admitted students as soon as possible, so that I may report to my Senior Staff colleagues, department chairs, and the President on the specifics of our new class.
Would you kindly respond to this email as soon as possible letting me know your decision? I would greatly appreciate it.
For those that were granted extensions until May 15th, if you happen to know your decision now, it would be great if you could communicate that to me. If there is any other information that you are waiting for in order to make your decison, please advise me of that as well, so that I may get an answer for you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon, and hope that you will be attending MSM in September! If you will be declining our offer, please remember to include the school that you have decided to attend, as well as the reason you chose that school. This information is extremely important for all the reports that I need to prepare for my colleagues and the President. 태어나서 토플을 한 번도 보지 않았기에, 잘 모르고선 늑장만 부리다가 7월 말에나 시험을 보게 됐거든요.
하지만 그래도 할 수 있는 건 해야겠기에, 학교에 다시 메일을 보내 이렇게 늦게 보내도 괜찮은지를 물었습니다.
6월 9일, 답장이 왔습니다.

너 아직 명단에 있어. 바뀐 게 있으면 바로 연락할게.
어쨌든 토플 안내면 이번에 등록 안된다.
올해 안되더라도 니 기록은 내년에 쓸 수 있게 갖고 있을게.
Thanks for your letter. As of now, you are still on our WL for MM voice. If we are able to change that, I will let you know as soon as I can. Even if we are able to remove you from the Waitlist, you cannot be admitted without a TOEFL score, so it is to your benefit to send a TOEFL regardless. Even if your admission doesn't work out for this year, we will have it on file for next year.

하지만 내년에 다시 입학신청 해야된다는건 알아둬.
우리는 토플 점수랑 추천서하고 사본(성적표와 졸업증명서)만 다시 쓸거야.
You are right. It is much too late for this year. We will keep it in your file for next year, but please understand that you will need to reapply and reaudition for Fall 2010. The only things we can re-use are your TOEFL, your letters of recommendation, and your transcripts.
