The Halls of Amenti
두 번째 서판. 아멘티의 회관들     

Deep in Earth's heart lie the Halls of Amenti,
far beneath the islands of sunken Atlantis,
Halls of the Dead and halls of the living,
bathed in the fire of the infinite ALL.

지구의 마음 속 깊은 곳에 가라앉은 아틀란티스 섬들의
아득한 아래쪽에 아멘티의 회관들이 있다.
그것은 죽은 자(死者)들의 방들과 살아있는 자들의 방들이며
그곳은 무한한 '전체'의 불빛으로 둘러싸여 있는 곳이다.

Far in a past time, lost in the space time,
the Children of Light looked down on the world.
Seeing the children of men in their bondage,
bound by the force that came from beyond.
Knew they that only by freedom from bondage
could man ever rise from the Earth to the Sun.

시간과 공간이 없는 아주 아득한 과거에
'빛의 아들들'은 지상을 내려다보았다.
그들은 '사람의 아들들'이 우주의 경계를 넘어
저 쪽(어두움)에서 온
어두운 힘에 묶여 노예의 상태에 있음을 보았고,
그들을 그 속박으로부터 해방시킬 때야만 비로소 사람들이
땅(지구)에서 하늘(태양)로 상승할 수 있음을 알았다.

Down they descended and created bodies,
taking the semblance of men as their own.
The Masters of everything said after their forming:
"We are they who were formed from the space-dust,
partaking of life from the infinite ALL;
living in the world as children of men,
like and yet unlike the children of men."

그래서 그 '빛의 아들들'은 지상으로 내려와
그들 자신의 모습을 인간과 비슷한 형태로 변형시켰다.
그들의 형상에 대해 만물의 스승들은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. 
"우리는 무한한 전체로부터의 비롯되고 더불어 함께하는
생명의 일부인 우주의 입자로부터 형성된 자들이다.
비록 우리가 지구에서 사람의 아들들처럼 살아가고 있지만
우리는 그들과 닮았을 뿐 '사람의 아들들'과는 같지 않다.

Then for a dwelling place, far beneath the earth crust,
blasted great spaces they by their power,
spaces apart from the children of men.
Surrounded them by forces and power,
shielded from harm they the Halls of the Dead.

그 다음에 그들은 자신들이 머물 곳을 마련하기 위해서
'사람의 아들들'이 거주하는 곳에서 멀리 떨어진 지각(地殼)아래
깊은 곳에 그들의 권능으로 큰 공간을 만들어 두었다.
그리고 그 공간들을 에너지와 힘으로 둘러싸게 하여
침입자로부터 보호하였다. 그것들이 바로 죽은 자들의 방이다.

Side by side then, placed they other spaces,
filled them with Life and with Light from above.
Builded they then the Halls of Amenti,
that they might dwell eternally there,
living with life to eternity's end.

그들은 그 옆에 나란히 다른 공간들도 만들었고
그 공간을 생명과 위에서 오는 빛으로 채웠다.
아멘티의 회관들을 만들 때
그들은 자신들이 영원히 그곳에서 살 수 있도록 했으며
영겁의 마지막 순간까지 생명을 가지고 살 수 있게 만들었다.

Thirty and two were there of the children,
sons of Lights who had come among men,
seeking to free from the bondage of darkness
those who were bound by the force from beyond.

우리 우주의 경계를 넘어 저 쪽(어두움)에서 온 힘인
어둠의 속박으로부터 사람들을 해방시켜 자유를 찾아주기 위해서
사람들 속으로 내려온 '빛의 아들들'은 모두 32명이었다. 

Deep in the Halls of Life grew a flower, flaming,
expanding, driving backward the night.

Placed in the centre, a ray of great potence, Life
giving, Light giving, filling with power all who came near it.
Placed they around it thrones, two and thirty,
places for each of the Children of Light,
placed so that they were bathed in the radiance,
filled with the Life from the eternal Light.

'생명의 방들' 깊은 곳에는 죽음의 암흑을 물리치는 꽃인,
불타오르며 피어나는 '생명의 꽃'이 자라고 있다.
그리고 그 생명의 꽃에 다가가 그 중앙에 서는 사람은 모두
생명과 빛을 주는 강력한 광선으로 인해
힘으로 가득 채워지게 되어있다,

그래서 '빛의 아들들'은 그 '생명의 꽃' 둘레에
각자의 자리 32개를 배치해 두었고,
그 꽃으로부터 흘러나오는 빛을 받아들임으로서
영원한 빛으로부터 오는 생명을 자신들에게 채울 수 있었다.

There time after time placed they their first created bodies
so that they might by filled with the Spirit of Life.
One hundred years out of each thousand must the
Life-giving Light flame forth on their bodies.
Quickening, awakening the Spirit of Life.

그들은 그렇게 자신들의 '생명의 혼'을 가득채움으로써
자신들이 취한 처음의 형태를 세월을 넘어 보존해 올 수 있었다.
그리고 자신에게 '생명의 혼'을 불어넣어 생명을 유지하고
각성시키고 되살리기 위해서는
매 천년마다 백년동안은 그들의 육체를
생명의 불꽃 앞에 두어 빛을 받아들여야 했다.
                                    
There in the circle from aeon to aeon,
sit the Great Masters,
living a life not known among men.
There in the Halls of Life they lie sleeping;
free flows their Soul through the bodies of men.

Time after time, while their bodies lie sleeping,
incarnate they in the bodies of men.
Teaching and guiding onward and upward,
out of the darkness into the light.

위대한 스승님들은 이곳에 원형으로 앉아
영겁에서 영겁으로 인간들이 알 수 없는 삶을 살아가고 있다.
여기 '생명의 방들'에 그들은 누워 잠을 자고 있다.
하지만 그들의 혼은 인간들의 몸을 통해 자유롭게 흘러든다.
세월을 넘어 스승들의 몸은 누워 잠들어 계시지만,
그들은 인간의 육체를 입고 화신(化身)하여
어둠으로부터 빛으로 나아가도록 가르치고 이끌어 왔다.

There in the Hall of Life, filled with their wisdom,
known not to the races of man,
living forever beneath the cold fire of life,
sit the Children of Light.
Times there are when they awaken,
come from the depths to be lights among men,
infinite they among finite men.

여기 지혜로 가득찬 생명의 방에서
빛의 아들들은 인간들에게 알려지지 않은 채, 
생명의 차가운 불꽃 아래 영원히 살아서 앉아 계신다.
그들이 인간들에게 빛이 되기 위해
깨어야 할 시간이 오면 그 분들은 이 깊은 곳에서 나온다.
그들은 유한한 사람들 사이의 무한한 스승들이다.

He who by progress has grown from the darkness,
lifted himself from the night into light,
free is he made of the Halls of Amenti,
free of the Flower of Light and of Life.
Guided he then, by wisdom and knowledge,
passes from men, to the Master of Life.
There he may dwell as one with the Masters,

free from the bonds of the darkness of night.                      
의식의 향상에 의해 어둠으로부터 충분히 자유로워진 자는
자기자신을 어둠에서 빛으로 들어 올릴 수 있게 되고,
'아멘티 회관들'에 자유롭게 출입할 수 있게 되고
'생명의 꽃'에 다가갈 수 있게 되어 삶으로부터 자유로워진다.
그때 그는 지혜와 지식에 의해 이끌려 인간에서
생명의 스승으로 나아가게 된다.
그리하여 그는 그곳에서 어두운 밤의 속박에서 벗어나
그곳의 일원이 되어 스승들과 함께 거주하게 된다.

Seated within the flower of radiance sit seven
Lords from the Space-Times above us,
helping and guiding through infinite Wisdom,
the pathway through time of the children of men.

우리들 위의 공간과 시간을 초월한 곳으로부터 오신
일곱 분의 주님들이 빛나는 꽃 위에 좌정(座定)하시어
세월의 흐름속에서 무한한 지혜로써
세상속에서 사람의 아들들을 인도하시고 도우시고 있다.

Mighty and strange, they, veiled with their power,
silent, all-knowing, drawing the Life force,
different yet one with the children of men.
Aye, different, and yet One with the Children of Light.
Custodians and watchers of the force of man's bondage,
ready to loose when the light has been reached.

그 주님들의 힘은 베일에 덮여있지만

강대하고 불가사의하며 침묵하고 계시고,
전지(全知)하며 생명력을 끌어오신다.
그리고 '사람의 아들'과는 같지 않은 분들이시다.
그렇다. 그분들은 '사람의 아들'과 다르며  '빛의 아들'과 하나이다.            
그분들은 인간을 구속하고 있는 힘의 감시자와 보호자들이시며
인간이 빛에 도달했을 때 그 구속을 풀어줄 준비가 되어있다.

First and most mighty, sits the Veiled Presence,
Lord of Lords, the infinite Nine,
over the other from each the Lords of the Cycles;
Three, Four, Five, and Six, Seven, Eight,
each with his mission, each with his powers,
guiding, directing the destiny of man.
There sit they, mighty and potent,
free of all time and space.

처음이며 가장 강하신 그 분은
주님들 중의 주님이시며, 무한한 '9' 이시며
베일에 가려 존재하시고 각 우주의 (진화를 위한) 순환을 주재하시는
각각의 다른 주님들 위에 군림하고 계신다.
그리고 그 '9'의 주님 밑에  '3' '4' '5' 주님들과
'6' '7' '8' 주님들이 모두 자신만의 사명과 자기 권능을 가지고
인간의 운명의 길을 가리키고 인도해 주고있다.
강력함과 무한한 잠재력을 지니셨고 모든 시간과 공간으로부터
자유로워진 주님들이 그곳에 앉아 계신다.

Not of this world they,
yet akin to it,
Elder Brothers they,
of the children of men.
Judging and weighing,
they with their wisdom,
watching the progress
of Light among men.

그분들은 우리가 사는 우주의 의식으로부터 비롯된 분들은 아니지만
우리가 살아가는 우주와 유사한 우주의 질료에서 비롯된 분들이며
'인간의 아들'의 형님들이다.
그분들은 자신의 지혜로서 판단하며 저울질하면서,
인간들 사이에서의 '빛의 진보과정'을 주시하고 있다.

There before them was I led by the Dweller,
watched him blend with ONE from above.
Then from HE came forth a voice saying:
"Great art thou, Thoth, among children of men.
Free henceforth of the Halls of Amenti,
Master of Life among children of men.
Taste not of death except as thou will it,
drink thou of Life to Eternity's end,
Henceforth forever is Life,
thine for the taking.
Henceforth is Death at the call of thy hand.
Dwell here or leave here when thou desireth,
free is Amenti to the Sun of man.
Take thou up Life in what form thou desireth,
Child of the Light that has grown among men.
Choose thou thy work, for all should must labor,
never be free from the pathway of Light.
One step thou has gained on the long pathway upward,
infinite now is the mountain of Light.
Each step thou taketh but heightens the mountain;
all of thy progress but lengthens the goal.
Approach ye ever the infinite Wisdom,
ever before thee recedes the goal.
Free are ye made now of the Halls of Amenti
to walk hand in hand with the Lords of the world,
one in one purpose, working together,
bring of Light to the children of men."
Then from his throne came one of the Masters,
taking my hand and leading me onward,
through all the Halls of the deep hidden land.
Led he me through the Halls of Amenti,
showing the mysteries that are known not to man.

그곳에 "머무르는 자" 에 의해 내가 주님들의 앞으로 인도되었을 때.
나는 위에서 온 하나와 그 "머무르는 자"가 일체가 되는 것을 보았다.
그리고 그 하나로부터 비롯된 '그 분'이 앞으로 나서 말씀하셨다.
"그대 사람의 아들 중 생명의 스승인 토트여,
너는 사람의 아들 중에서 위대하도다.

이제부터 너는 아멘티 홀에 자유롭게 출입할 수 있게 되리라.
그리고 이제 네가 스스로 원하지 않는다면 죽음을 맛보지 않을 것이며,
영겁의 끝까지 생명을 마시게 되리라.
앞으로 생명은 영원히 너의 것이 될 것이며,
네가 바라는 무엇이든 너의 것이 되리라.

또 앞으로 죽음은 네가 초청하지 않는 한 너를 잡지 못하리라.
여기에 머무르거나 떠나거나 마음대로 하라.
인간의 태양인 너에게 아멘티의 출입은 자유스러울 것이니라.
인간들 속에서 성장해온 빛의 아들이여.
네가 바라는 모습을 취해서 그대로의 삶을 살아가라.
모든 영혼은 노력해야 하기에 너는 너의 할 일을 선택하라.
결코 빛의 길로부터 벗어나지 말라.

빛을 향해 위로 나아가는 먼 길을 한 걸음씩 나아가라.
'빛의 산'은 끝없는 현재이다.
네가 한 걸음씩 올라가면 산도 또한 높아지리라.
그렇게 나아가면 갈수록 목표는 멀어지리라.
너는 영원한 지혜에 언제나 다가가겠지만
네가 바라는 그 목표는 언제나 네 앞에서 물러가리라.
이제부터 너는 자유롭게 아멘티에 출입할 수 있게 되리라.
그리고 세상의 주님들과 손에 손을 잡고 걸으며
큰 하나의 목적과 하나가 되도록 함께 일하며.

사람의 아들들에게 빛을 가져다 주리라."

Through the dark passage, downward he led me,
into the Hall where site the dark Death.
Vast as space lay the great Hall before me,
walled by darkness but yet filled with Light.
Before me arose a great throne of darkness,
veiled on it seated a figure of night.
Darker than darkness sat the great figure,
dark with a darkness not of the night.

그는 어두운 통로를 지나서 아래쪽으로
어두운 죽음의 터에 자리잡고 있는 방 속으로 나를 이끌어갔다.
그러자 내 앞에 어두운 벽들로 둘러싸인 커다란 방이 펼쳐져 나타났다.
하지만 그 방은 빛으로 가득 차 있었다.
그리고 내 앞에 거대한 암흑의 보좌(寶座)가 나타났고,
그 자리를 덮고 앉아 있는 밤의 형상이 보였다.
그렇게 앉아있는 거대한 형상은 어둠보다 더욱 어두웠지만
그 어두움은 밤의 어두움과는 전혀 다른 어두움이었다.
 
Before it then paused the Master, speaking
The Word that brings about Life, saying;
"Oh, master of darkness,
guide of the way from Life unto Life,
before thee I bring a Sun of the morning.
Touch him not ever with the power of night.
Call not his flame to the darkness of night.
Know him, and see him,
one of our brothers,
lifted from darkness into the Light.
Release thou his flame from its bondage,
free let it flame through the darkness of night."

그때에 그 어두운 형상 앞에 멈추어 선 스승은
생명으로부터 가져온 말씀으로 이렇게 이야기하셨다.
"오! 어둠의 스승이시여, 삶에서 삶으로 이어지는 길의 안내자여,
그대 앞 이 자리에 나는 '아침의 태양'을 데려 왔노라.
결코 밤의 권능으로 그에게 손대지 말고
밤의 어두움으로 그의 불꽃을 불러 들이지 말라.

어둠으로부터 빛으로 상승하여
우리의 형제들 중 하나가 된 그를 보아두고, 그를 알아두라.
그의 불꽃을 그 자신의 속박에서 벗어나게 하여
그 불꽃(自我)이 밤의 어두움을 관통하여 불타게 하라."                        

Raised then the hand of the figure,
forth came a flame that grew clear and bright.
Rolled back swiftly the curtain of darkness,
unveiled the Hall from the darkness of night.
Then grew in the great space before me,
flame after flame, from the veil of the night.
Uncounted millions leaped they before me,
some flaming forth as flowers of fire.

Others there were that shed a dim radiance,
flowing but faintly from out of the night.
Some there were that faded swiftly;
others that grew from a small spark of light.
Each surrounded by its dim veil of darkness,
yet flaming with light that could never be quenched.
Coming and going like fireflies in springtime,
filled they with space with Light and with Life.

그때에 그 '어둠의 형상'이 손을 들어올리자
뚜렷하고 밝게 타오르는 한 불꽃이 밖으로 드러났다.
그리고 다시 신속하게 어둠의 장막이 되말려 걷어졌고
밤의 어둠 속에서 방이 나타났다.
그리고 내 앞에 펼쳐진 커다란 공간 안에
밤의 장막으로부터 나타난 무수한 불꽃들이 꼬리지어 날아다녔다.

 
내 앞에 나타난 그 불꽃들은 수백만의 무수한 불꽃들로서
어떤 것은 '불의 꽃들'처럼 빛나게 불타오르고 있었다.   
그리고 그곳의 어떤 것들은 어두움 속에서 흘러나와
가냘프게 깜빡이며 희미한 광채를 발하고 있었고
다른 어떤 것들은 작은 빛의 광채로부터 흘러나오고 있었다.
그리고 그 모든 불꽃들이 각각 어둠의 희미한 베일에 둘러 쌓여 있지만.
그 언제까지나 꺼지지 않는 빛으로 타오르면서
봄철의 반딧불처럼 오락가락 했으며.
생명과 빛으로 그 커다란 공간은 가득 채우고 있었다.

Then spoke a voice, mighty and solemn, saying:
"These are lights that are souls among men,
growing and fading, existing forever,
changing yet living, through death into life.
When they have bloomed into flower,
reached the zenith of growth in their life,
swiftly then send I my veil of darkness,
shrouding and changing to new forms of life.
Steadily upward throughout the ages, growing,
expanding into yet another flame,
lighting the darkness with yet greater power,
quenched yet unquenched by the veil of the night.
So grows the soul of man ever upward,
quenched yet unquenched by the darkness of night.

그때에 아주 힘있고도 엄숙한 목소리가 들려왔다.
"이것들은 인간이 지닌 영혼인 빛들로서
자라기도 하고 그리고 시들기도 하며 영원히 존재하기도 한다.
이 영혼의 빛들은 각 자의 삶을 통하여
죽음(死)을 통과하여 생명(生)으로 변화하고 있다.
그리고 그 영혼들이 자신의 삶속에서 성장하여 정점에 도달하면
그들은 활짝 꽃을 피우게 되고,
그 때 나는 신속하게 내 어둠의 베일을 걷어
그 영혼을 감싸고 그것을 새로운 생명의 형태로 바꾸어 버린다.

영혼들은 다른 영혼들과 함께 모든 시대들을 통하여 꾸준히 상승하여
성장하고 확장하면서 보다 더 큰 강력한 불꽃이 되어 어둠을 비추게 된다.
그때 그 불꽃들은 밤의 베일로 감추려고 해도 더 이상 감추어지지 않는다.
이렇게 사람의 영혼은 언제나 높은 곳으로 상승하며
밤의 어둠으로 끄려고 해도 꺼지지 않는 불꽃이 되는 것이다.

I, Death, come, and yet I remain not,
for life eternal exists in the ALL;
only an obstacle, I in the pathway,
quick to be conquered by the infinite light.
Awaken, O flame that burns ever inward,
flame forth and conquer the veil of the night."

나, 죽음은 올 수는 있을지라도 머물지는 못한다.
그 까닭은 모든 것 속에는 영원한 생명이 들어있기 때문이니,
나는 (생명에서 비롯된 것이기에) 생명의 길에 있어서
무한의 빛에 의해 정복되어 덧없이 스러지는
하나의 방해물에 지나지 않는다.
그러므로 잠에서 깨어나라.
아, 영원토록 내부에서 타오르고 있는 영혼의 불꽃이여.
활활 타올라 밤의 장막을 정복하라.                        

Then in the midst of the flames
in the darkness grew there one that
drove forth the night, flaming, expanding,
ever brighter, until at last was nothing but Light.
Then spoke my guide, the voice of the master:
See your own soul as it grows in the light,
free now forever from the Lord of the night.

그때 어둠 속의 불꽃들 중에서
한 불꽃이 밤을 밀어내면서 점점 커지고
불타오르면서 퍼져나가더니 더욱 밝게 빛나서,
드디어 불빛만이 남아 공간을 빛으로 가득 차게 하였다.
그러자 나의 안내자인 스승께서 말씀하셨다.
"네 자신의 영혼을 보라.
그 영혼은 빛 속에서 점점 자라서 
이제 영원히 밤의 주님의 손으로부터 자유로워 졌노라.    

Forward he led me through many great spaces
filled with the mysteries of the Children of Light;
mysteries that man may never yet know of until
he, too, is a Sun of the Light.
Backward then HE led me into the Light
of the hall of the Light.
Knelt I then before the great Masters,
Lords of ALL from the cycles above.

그는 계속 나아가 '빛의 아들' 들의 신비들로
가득 차 있는 수많은 방들로 나를 이끌어 갔다. 
그 신비들은 인간이 자기 또한 빛의 태양이 될 때까지는
결코 알 수 없는 것들이었다.
그리고 그는 나를 이끌고 돌아가서
'빛의 방'에 비치고 있는 그 빛 속으로 데려갔다.
그리고 그곳에서 나는 순환의 고리 너머로부터 온
'만물의 주님'들인 위대한 스승들 앞에 무릎 꿇고 경배했다.

Spoke HE then with words of great power saying:
Thou hast been made free of the Halls of Amenti.
Choose thou thy work among the children of men.

그때에 장엄한 권능의 말로써 주님이 말씀하셨다.
"이제 너는 '아멘티의 회관'에서 자유를 얻게 되었다.
그러므로 너는 사람의 아들들 속에서 네가 할 일을 선택하라."

Then spoke I:
O, great master,
let me be a teacher of men,
leading then onward and upward until they,
too, are lights among men;
freed from the veil of the night that surrounds them,
flaming with light that shall shine among men.

그래서 나는 대답했다.
오. 위대한 스승님이시여,
저로 하여금 인간들을 가르치는 교사가 되게 하소서.
그들이 또한 스스로 다른 사람들의 빛이 될 때까지
그들을 저 높은 곳 위로 이끌어 주는 이가 되게 하소서.
사람들 가운데 빛이되어 밝게 빛나 불타오르게 하시며
그들을 둘러싸고 있는 밤의 베일로부터 자유를 얻게 하소서.

Spoke to me then the voice:
Go, as yet will. So be it decreed.
Master are ye of your destiny,
free to take or reject at will.
Take yet the power, take ye the wisdom.
Shine as a light among the children of men.

그러자 주님이 나에게 말씀하셨다.
"가라. 그리고 네가 뜻하고자 하는 바를 하라.
그것이 천명(天命)이 되리니.
너는 네 자신의 운명의 주인이 되리라.
너의 의지로 받아들이거나 물치치는 것도 자유로울지니
이제 너는 힘과 지혜를 지녀
사람의 아들 중에서 빛이 되어 빛나게 되리라." 

Upward then, led me the Dweller.
Dwelt I again among children of men,
teaching and showing some of my wisdom;
Sun of the Light, a fire among men.

Now again I tread the path downward,
seeking the light in the darkness of night.
Bold ye and keep ye, preserve my record,
guide shall it be to the children of men.                                        
  
그리고 나서 나는
사람들 사이에서 불이 되고 빛의 태양이 되어.
내 지혜의 일부를 보여주고 가르쳐 주기 위해
다시 사람의 아들 속에서 머물러 살기 위하여
'머무르는 자'에게 이끌리어 위를 향하여(이 세상으로) 올라왔다.
                                 
이제 나는 다시 밤의 어두움 속에서 빛을 찾기 위해서
저 아래 아멘티의 회관으로 길을 내려간다.
용감한 너회들은 나의 기록을 잘 지키고 보존하라.
나의 기록들은 인간의 아들들에게 길잡이가 될 것이다
