Indonesian Film Recommendation | 인도네시아의 추천 영화

Indonesia does made and cover a lot of film genres, but for some reason, the genres that they really like to do the most are Horror and Comedy. Other than those 2 genres, there is also romance. But this year, there's a film that leaves a mark in my heart, and yes thankfully, it's neither a horror or a comedy movie.

This movie is a slice of life movie that talks about the philosophy of life, family, and also humanity. It also tells how in human life, some chances don't and will not come twice. So when you still got the chance to do so, even simple things such as forgiving others or thanking your parents, do it now before it's too late.

1. The movie is called "Sore: Istri dari Masa Depan (2025)" or "Sore: Wife from the Future" in English. (Slice of Life) | 소레: 미래에서 온 아내 (2025)

인도네시아에서는 정말 다양한 장르의 영화가 만들어지고 있습니다. 하지만 유독 많이 제작되는 장르는 공포와 코미디입니다. 이 두 장르 외에도 로맨스 영화가 있습니다. 그런데 올해, 제 마음에 깊이 남은 한 편의 영화가 있었습니다. 다행히도 그 영화는 공포도, 코미디도 아니었습니다.

이 영화는 일상적인 삶을 다루는 슬라이스 오브 라이프 장르로, 인생의 의미와 가족, 그리고 인간다움에 대해 이야기합니다. 또한 사람의 인생에서 어떤 기회들은 다시 오지 않는다는 점을 보여줍니다. 그래서 다른 사람을 용서하는 것, 부모님께 감사 인사를 하는 것처럼 아주 작은 일이라도 아직 기회가 있을 때 지금 당장 해야 한다는 메시지를 전합니다. 늦기 전에 말입니다.

이 영화의 제목은 「소레: 미래에서 온 아내」이며, 영어 제목은 Sore: Wife from the Future입니다.

I recommend this movie for those of you who likes to watch a slow paced movie that talks about life chances and regrets. This movie is also one of my personal favorites.

그리고 이 영화는 제가 개인적으로 정말 좋아하는 영화 중 하나이기도 합니다.

2. Marlina: Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak (2017) | Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (2017) | 말리나: 네 개의 막으로 이루어진 살인 (2017)

This movie is more of a thriller movie that tells a story of a woman named Marlina who is visited by seven robbers who want to steal all her money, livestock, and even her dignity, right in front of her husband’s corpse. The next day, Marlina begins a journey to seek justice and redemption, carrying the severed head of the gang leader whom she beheaded the night before.

I recommend this movie if you like thriller and a slow paced movie. I like how this movie focuses a lot on the character progression, which makes watching feel nice.

이 영화는 스릴러 영화로, 말리나(Marlina)라는 한 여자의 이야기를 다룹니다. 말리나는 이미 죽은 남편의 시신 앞에서, 그녀의 돈과 가축, 그리고 존엄성까지 빼앗으려는 일곱 명의 강도를 맞이하게 됩니다. 다음 날, 말리나는 전날 밤에 목을 벤 강도단 두목의 잘린 머리를 들고, 정의와 구원을 찾기 위한 여행을 시작합니다.

스릴러 영화와 느린 전개의 영화를 좋아하시는 분들께 이 영화를 추천합니다. 이 영화는 인물의 성장과 변화에 많이 집중해서, 차분하지만 몰입감 있게 볼 수 있는 점이 정말 좋았습니다.

3. Nanti Kita Cerita tentang Hari Ini (2019) | One Day We'll Talk About Today (2019) | 나중에 우리는 오늘에 대해 이야기할 거야 (2019)

This is also one of my personal favorites. This movie is a slice of life movie that talks about family, and how a simple matter could ruin the entire family, but at the same time a simple thing can also make a family bond strong. It also talks how broken family can happen, but at the same time giving a philosophy or solution on how to keep a family going strong. It tells about the relationship and the role of a father, mother, and also siblings to each other. Every family members have their own struggle, secrets, and goal in life, but as a family, it is important to support each other rather than going on our own.

I really love this movie, and personally it's a movie that really touches my heart since I can really relate it with my family as well. This is also one of Indonesian movies that made me cry. I absolutely recommend this too.

이 영화도 제가 개인적으로 정말 좋아하는 작품 중 하나입니다. 이 영화는 가족에 대해 이야기하는 일상(slice of life) 영화입니다. 아주 사소한 일이 가족 전체를 무너뜨릴 수도 있고, 반대로 작은 행동 하나가 가족의 유대를 더 강하게 만들 수도 있다는 것을 보여줍니다.

또한 깨진 가족이 어떻게 생길 수 있는지 보여주면서, 동시에 가족을 계속 지켜나가기 위한 철학과 해답도 제시합니다. 아버지, 어머니, 그리고 형제자매 사이의 관계와 각자의 역할에 대해서도 다룹니다. 모든 가족 구성원은 각자 힘든 점, 비밀, 그리고 인생의 목표를 가지고 있지만, 가족이라면 혼자서 버티기보다는 서로를 지지하는 것이 중요하다는 메시지를 전합니다.

저는 이 영화를 정말 사랑합니다. 개인적으로 제 가족과 많이 공감할 수 있어서 마음에 깊이 와닿았습니다. 이 영화는 제가 울게 만든 인도네시아 영화 중 하나이기도 합니다. 정말 강력하게 추천합니다.

4. Penyalin Cahaya (2021) | Photocopier (2021) | 포토카피어 (2021)

This film focuses on a character named Sur, and her search for justice after experiencing sexual assault. At the beginning of the film, Sur is shown waking up after attending a victory celebration for Mata Hari, a theater group where she works as a freelance web developer.

I also recommend this movie for those of you who likes thriller, mystery, and action-like movies. This movie is also good because it talks about a real life concerning problem that still exists until today.

이 영화는 수르(Sur)라는 인물이 성폭력을 당한 후, 정의를 찾기 위해 나서는 이야기를 다룹니다.
영화의 시작에서 수르는 자신이 프리랜서 웹 개발자로 일하고 있는 연극 단체 **마타 하리(Mata Hari)**의 우승 축하 행사에 참석한 뒤 잠에서 깨어나는 모습으로 등장합니다.

또한 이 영화는 스릴러, 미스터리, 액션 같은 장르를 좋아하는 분들께 추천하고 싶습니다.

위에 언급한 영화들 모두 여러 영화제에서 다수의 상을 수상한 작품들입니다.

My other favorite director is also Ernest Prakasa. He made a lot of philosophical movies through comedic approach that are really relatable. But I think most of the comedy and jokes  (or pun) are only understandable for Indonesian, so that's why I didn't include his movies here. But it's still really refreshing to learn a lot about life througha  comedic approach.

또 한 명의 제가 좋아하는 감독은 에르네스트 프라카사(Ernest Prakasa)입니다. 그는 코미디적인 접근을 통해 철학적인 메시지를 담은 영화를 많이 만들었고, 그 내용이 정말 공감이 잘 됩니다. 다만 그의 영화 속 코미디와 농담(말장난 포함)은 대부분 인도네시아 문화에 익숙한 사람들에게 더 잘 이해될 수 있어서, 이번 목록에는 포함하지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 코미디라는 방식으로 인생에 대해 많은 것을 배우게 해줘서 정말 신선하고 의미 있는 작품들이라고 생각합니다.

I just realized that most Indonesian films I’ve watched before were actually horror or comedy lolll, so I really appreciated you sharing films from other genres. I liked how you emphasized slice-of-life storytelling in Sore, and the way it reflects on family, life choices, and regrets sounds very meaningful. Marlina’s female perspective and focus on character development also stood out to me. Also for Photocopier.. I’m definitely interested in watching these during the break:)
