1. Hexagram 1 : The Creative / Heavy Heaven(Qian). ䷀ ......2
▣ A hidden dragon; do not act.
[Original Text,
Cho-9(First Nine) refers to a submerged dragon, so do not act / do not employ it.
[Explanation, 해설]
Jamryong(Submered Dragon) is a dragon that still needs to buikd strenght
in its limbs and practice swimming deep underwater.
It is an immature dragon that should not venture out looking for a place to be employed.
This is like a newborn baby whose penis can become erect,
yet cannot fulfill the role of an adult.
The Yao text(Line Statement) of the Qian Hexagram(the Creative) where this dragon
appears was written by the Duke of Zhou.
Confucius added commentary to this in various ways,
providing enough detail that no further explanation is necessary.
Naturally, numerous commentaries by later scholars followed Confucius.
First, let us look at Confucius′s commentary on the Yaotext for[Initial Nine]
of the Qian Hexagram: "Do not employ the submerged dragon[Jamryong Muryong],"
because the Yang energu is still insignificant[Yang Jae Ha].
Confuius offers another clear interpretation of this passage in the
"Wenyan Zhuan"(Commentary on the Words) :
"Do not employ the submerger dragon" means leaving it cast down below[Ha Ya].
In[Initial Nine], even if the Yang ebergy is aroused, it must remain hidden[Yang-gi Jam-jang].
What does " Do not employ the submerged dragon" mean[Ha-wi Ya]?
Jamryong refers to a recluse who possesses the virtue of knowing how
to conceal oneself [Yong-deok-i-eun-ja-ya].
Therefore, even when adapting to the world, do not alter one′s purpose[Bul-yeok-ho-se].
Do not try to flaunt or establish even a humble three-letter name[Bul-seong-ho-myeong].
Do not agonize while living turned away from the world[Dun-see-i-mu-min],
nor feel embarrassed when unrecognized for what should be seen[Bul-gyeon-si-i-mu-min].
If it brings worry, do not lift a single finger[U-jeok-wi-ji].
Songs related to this content from the "Wenyan Zhuan" include Yun Seondo′s Sunflower,
as well as Lee Min-gu′s step of untangled Behavior[Haeng-wi].
Only when such a mindset and gait are ssolid and unshakeable,
refusing to be twisted or swept away by external influences[Hwak-ho-gi-bul-ga],
can one be considered a proper Jamryong(Sbmerged Dragon)[Jam-ryong-ya].
Although a Jamryong possesses the form of a dragon,
the time is not yet ripe for it to emerge into the world.
Therefore, one must neither flatter worldly affairs nor seek fame.
Even if forced to live in hiding, one must not complain;
even if criticized, one must never harbor discontent.
If one′s commitment to keeping the Dao(Path) is this solid and unshakeable,
they truly possess the worldly wisdom of a Jwmryong.
Confucius strictly warns through[Initial Nine] not to become a useless person
by being employed reccklessly in unnecessary places:
"A Junzi(Gentleman) acts only when their self-cultivation[virtue] is complete
[Gunjahaseongdeokwihaeng]."
Since studiess are not yet complete at[Initial Nine],
the urgent task for a jamryong is the daily practice of self-reflection[ll-ga-gyeon-ji-haeng].
Remember the meaning of the word 'Jam(Submerge)' here[Jam-ji-wi-eon-ya] :
Even if 'Jam' means kept hidden, when the right time comes,
it will reveal itself even if told not to[Eun-i-mi-gyeon].
And when one acts, success will surely follow, even if told not to succeed[Haeng-i-mi-seong].
Therefore, a Junzi(Gentleman) must ensure that they are not recklessly used
when the time is not right[Si-i-gun-ja-bul-yong-ya].
Here, 'Jam(Submerge)' is a sign indicating that when the Qian Hexagram(The Creative)
transforms in to the Gou Hexagram(Coming to Meet),
the lower trigram Xun(Wind,☴-巽,손풍) endures with patience and self-restraint,
lying low in hiding[Eun-in-ja-jang].
In the phreses 'Eun-i-mi-gyon' and 'Haeng-i-mi-seong' above,
the character 'Ml(微,미) can be seen as a negative judgment,
but it can also be interpreted to mean that if one works hard even while ilving in hiding,
success is bound to be possible in the 'unreached future'(Misi).
Just as Liu Bei in ancient times relied on Cao Cao,
tending a vegetable garden in the backyard to scheme for the future[To-hoe-ji-gye],
today′s presidential candidates act with caution among public sentiment precisely
because they view themselves as Jamryong(Submerged Dragons).
On the other hand, Choi Gyeong stated in the Explanations and annotations
on the Book of Changess :
"Since the dragon is hidden underground, it does not reveal its virtue,
but hides its light and waits for the right time[Do-gwang-dae-sl]."
Furthermore, Ma Rong noted :
"Because nothing is greater than a dragon,
the dragon waas borrowed as a metaphor for the heavenly Yang energy."
