1) Genesis Introduction (GNT Bible) : 창세기 소개

The name Genesis means “origin.” The book tells about the creation of the universe, the origin of the human race, the beginning of sin and suffering in the world, and about God's way of dealing with humanity. Genesis can be divided into two main parts: (1) The creation of the world and the early history of the human race. Here are the accounts of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, and the Tower of Babylon (chapters 1—11). (2) The history of the early ancestors of the Israelites. The first is Abraham, who was notable for his faith and his obedience to God. Then follow the stories of his son Isaac, and grandson Jacob (also called Israel), and of Jacob's twelve sons, who were the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel. Special attention is given to one of the sons, Joseph, and the events that brought Jacob and his other sons with their families to live in Egypt (chapters 12—50).

While this book tells stories about people, it is first and foremost an account of what God has done. It begins with the affirmation that God created the universe, and it ends with a promise that God will continue to show his concern for his people. Throughout the book the main character is God, who judges and punishes those who do wrong, leads and helps his people, and shapes their history. This ancient book was written to record the story of a people's faith and to help keep that faith alive.

The Story of Creation(천지창조)

1 In the beginning, when God created the universe,[a] 

2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God[b] was moving over the water. 

3 Then God commanded, “Let there be light”—and light appeared. 

4 God was pleased with what he saw. Then he separated the light from the darkness, 

5 and he named the light “Day” and the darkness “Night.” Evening passed and morning came—that was the first day.

6-7 Then God commanded, “Let there be a dome to divide the water and to keep it in two separate places”—and it was done. So God made a dome, and it separated the water under it from the water above it. 

8 He named the dome “Sky.” Evening passed and morning came—that was the second day.

9 Then God commanded, “Let the water below the sky come together in one place, so that the land will appear”—and it was done.

11 Then he commanded, “Let the earth produce all kinds of plants, those that bear grain and those that bear fruit”—and it was done. 

12 So the earth produced all kinds of plants, and God was pleased with what he saw. 

13 Evening passed and morning came—that was the third day.

14 Then God commanded, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate day from night and to show the time when days, years, and religious festivals[c] begin;

16 So God made the two larger lights, the sun to rule over the day and the moon to rule over the night; he also made the stars. 

17 He placed the lights in the sky to shine on the earth, 

18 to rule over the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God was pleased with what he saw. 

19 Evening passed and morning came—that was the fourth day.

14   하나님이 말씀하시기를 "하늘 창공에 빛나는 것들이 생겨서, 낮과 밤을 가르고, 계절과 날과 해를 나타내는 표가 되어라.
15   또 하늘 창공에 있는 빛나는 것들은 땅을 환히 비추어라" 하시니, 그대로 되었다.

20 Then God commanded, “Let the water be filled with many kinds of living beings, and let the air be filled with birds.” 

21 So God created the great sea monsters, all kinds of creatures that live in the water, and all kinds of birds. And God was pleased with what he saw. 

22 He blessed them all and told the creatures that live in the water to reproduce and to fill the sea, and he told the birds to increase in number. 

23 Evening passed and morning came—that was the fifth day.

20   하나님이 말씀하시기를 "물은 생물을 번성하게 하고, 새들은 땅 위 하늘 창공으로 날아다녀라" 하셨다.
21   하나님이 커다란 바다 짐승들과 물에서 번성하는 움직이는 모든 생물을 그 종류대로 창조하시고, 날개 달린 모든 새를 그 종류대로 창조하셨다. 하나님 보시기에 좋았다.

24 Then God commanded, “Let the earth produce all kinds of animal life: domestic and wild, large and small”—and it was done. 

25 So God made them all, and he was pleased with what he saw.

26 Then God said, “And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild,[d] large and small.” 

27 So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, 

28 blessed them, and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. 

29 I have provided all kinds of grain and all kinds of fruit for you to eat; 

30 but for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food”—and it was done. 

31 God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased. Evening passed and morning came—that was the sixth day.

24   하나님이 말씀하시기를 "땅은 생물을 그 종류대로 내어라. 집짐승과 기어다니는 것과 들짐승을 그 종류대로 내어라" 하시니, 그대로 되었다.
25   하나님이 들짐승을 그 종류대로, 집짐승도 그 종류대로, 들에 사는 모든 길짐승도 그 종류대로 만드셨다. 하나님 보시기에 좋았다.

Genesis 2(창세기 제2장)

1 And so the whole universe was completed. 

2 By the seventh day God finished what he had been doing and stopped working. 

3 He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a special day, because by that day he had completed his creation[a] and stopped working. 

4 And that is how the universe was created.

The Garden of Eden

When the Lord[b] God made the universe, 

5 there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; 

6 but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground.

7 Then the Lord God took some soil from the ground and formed a man[c] out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live.

8 Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. 

9 He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.[d]

10 A stream flowed in Eden and watered the garden; beyond Eden it divided into four rivers. 

11 The first river is the Pishon; it flows around the country of Havilah. 

(12 Pure gold is found there and also rare perfume and precious stones.) 

13 The second river is the Gihon; it flows around the country of Cush.[e] 

14 The third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria, and the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 Then the Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. 

16 He told him, “You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 

17 except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.[f] You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him.” 

19 So he took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and all the birds. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and that is how they all got their names. 

20 So the man named all the birds and all the animals; but not one of them was a suitable companion to help him.

21 Then the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 

22 He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. 

23 Then the man said,

“At last, here is one of my own kind—
Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh.
‘Woman’ is her name because she was taken out of man.”[g]

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.

25 The man and the woman were both naked, but they were not embarrassed.

제 2 장
1   하나님은 하늘과 땅과 그 가운데 있는 모든 것을 다 이루셨다.
2   하나님은 하시던 일을 1)엿샛날까지 다 마치시고, 이렛날에는 하시던 모든 일에서 손을 떼고 쉬셨다.
3   이렛날에 하나님이 창조하시던 모든 일에서 손을 떼고 쉬셨으므로, 하나님은 그 날을 복되게 하시고 거룩하게 하셨다.

에덴 동산
4   하늘과 땅을 창조하실 때의 일은 이러하다. 주 하나님이 땅과 하늘을 만드실 때에,
5   주 하나님이 땅 위에 비를 내리지 않으셨고, 땅을 갈 사람도 아직 없었으므로, 땅에는 나무가 없고, 들에는 풀 한 포기도 아직 돋아나지 않았다.
6   땅에서 물이 솟아서, 온 땅을 적셨다.
7   주 하나님이 2)땅의 흙으로 3)사람을 지으시고, 그의 코에 생명의 기운을 불어넣으시니, 사람이 생명체가 되었다.
8   주 하나님이 동쪽에 있는 에덴에 동산을 일구시고, 지으신 사람을 거기에 두셨다.
9   주 하나님은 보기에 아름답고 먹기에 좋은, 열매를 맺는 온갖 나무를 땅에서 자라게 하시고, 동산 한가운데는 생명나무와 선과 악을 알게 하는 나무를 자라게 하셨다.

11   첫째 강의 이름은 비손인데, 금이 나는 하윌라 온 땅을 돌아서 흘렀다.
12   그 땅에서 나는 금은 질이 좋았다. 브돌라라는 향료와 홍옥수와 같은 보석도 거기에서 나왔다.
13   둘째 강의 이름은 기혼인데, 구스 온 땅을 돌아서 흘렀다.
14   셋째 강의 이름은 티그리스인데, 앗시리아의 동쪽으로 흘렀다. 넷째 강은 유프라테스이다.
15   주 하나님이 사람을 데려다가 에덴 동산에 두시고, 그 곳을 맡아서 돌보게 하셨다.
16   주 하나님이 사람에게 명하셨다. "동산에 있는 모든 나무의 열매는, 네가 먹고 싶은 대로 먹어라.
17   그러나 선과 악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매만은 먹어서는 안 된다. 그것을 먹는 날에는, 너는 반드시 죽을 것이다."
18   주 하나님이 말씀하셨다. "남자가 혼자 있는 것이 좋지 않으니, 그를 돕는 사람, 곧 그에게 알맞은 짝을 만들어 주겠다."
19   주 하나님이 들의 모든 짐승과 공중의 모든 새를 흙으로 빚어서 만드시고, 그 사람에게로 이끌고 오셔서, 그 사람이 그것들을 무엇이라고 하는지를 보셨다. 그 사람이 살아 있는 동물 하나하나를 이르는 것이, 그대로 동물들의 이름이 되었다.
20   그 사람이 모든 집짐승과 공중의 새와 들의 모든 짐승에게 이름을 붙여 주었다. 그러나 그 3)남자를 돕는 사람, 곧 그의 짝이 없었다.
21   그래서 주 하나님이 그 남자를 깊이 잠들게 하셨다. 그가 잠든 사이에, 주 하나님이 그 남자의 갈빗대 하나를 뽑고, 그 자리는 살로 메우셨다.
22   주 하나님이 남자에게서 뽑아 낸 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고, 여자를 남자에게로 데리고 오셨다.
23   그 때에 그 남자가 말하였다. "이제야 나타났구나, 이 사람! 뼈도 나의 뼈, 살도 나의 살, 4)남자에게서 나왔으니 5)여자라고 부를 것이다."
24   그러므로 남자는 아버지와 어머니를 떠나, 아내와 결합하여 한 몸을 이루는 것이다.
25   남자와 그 아내가 둘 다 벌거벗고 있었으나, 부끄러워하지 않았다.
