Eleven Minutes/Paulo Coelho/Harper Torch (2004)

“연금술사”를 쓴 작가의 작품이라 어떤 내용일까 무척 궁금했다.

마리아(Maria)라는 한 소녀가 사춘기시절에 사랑의 상처를 입고 자신의 몸과 성에 대해 발견해 나가는 과정과, 20대 초반에 꿈을 찾아 리오(Rio)에 갔다가, 우연히 한 남자를 만나 제네바로 가서, 결국 매춘부의 삶을 살게 된다.

책의 마지막 장을 덮으며- 이건 성애소설이 아닐까? 하는 생각이 들었다. 다른 점이 있다면, 매춘의 결과로 끝내 인생의 실패와 인간성의 파멸이 아니고, 그 속에서도 결국은 진정한 사랑을 발견하여 해피엔딩으로 끝난다는 점이다.

이 책의 스토리 라인을 위와 같이 간단하지만, 여성의 몸과 성, 매춘의 역사, 기원, 매춘부에 대한 기존의 통념에 많은 변화를 주고 있다.

먼저 이 책에서 그려지는 매춘부의 삶은 우리가 영화에서 보던 모습과는 많이 다르다. 마리아가 일하게 되는 Copacapana클럽에서 일하는 동료들은 매춘을 돈을 벌기 위해 하나의 직업으로 선택한 것으로 자신의 삶을 통제할 수 있는 것처럼 보인다..

성이 우리가 생각하는 것처럼 단지 욕망의 표출일 뿐일까? 저자는 이 책을 통해 사조-매조키즘의 기원을 고통을 통한 쾌락의 추구라고 말하고 있다. 그리고 이전에 성을 통해 남을 구원하고 자유롭게 하였다는 이야기도 하고 있다. Sacred nature of sex.

책의 제목 “Eleven Minutes”을 무슨 뜻일까?

마리아가 클럽에 들어오기 전 한 남자와의 하룻밤 사랑에 천프랑을 받았다고 하자, 마리아의 동료가 이렇게 말한다.

For a night? Now come on, Maria, you’re exaggerating. It’s really only forty-five minutes, and if you allow time for taking off clothes, making some phony gesture of affection, having a bit of banal conversation and getting dressed again, the amount of time spent actually having sex is about eleven minutes.

Eleven minutes. The world revolved around something that only took eleven minutes. (p.86)

수많은 남자들이 찾고자 하는 욕망을 무엇일까?

Desire is not what you see, but what you imagine (p.159)

매춘의 역사는 얼마나 오래되었으며, 기원이 무엇일까? 무진장 오래되었다. 그리고 한가지 우리가 알고 있는 상식과 다른 이야기가 있다.

The other history is exactly the opposite: sacred prostitution…. Sacred prostitution? Earning money from sex and yet still able to approach God?

The Greek historian, Herodotus, wrote of Babylonia: they have a strange custom here, by which every woman born in Sumeria is obliged, at least once in her lifetime, to go to the temple of the goddess Ishtar and give her body to a stranger, as a symbol of hospitality and for a symbolic price…..the influence of the goddess Ishtar spread throughout the Middle East, as far as Sardinia, Sicily and the Mediterranean ports. Later during the Roman Empire, another goddess, Vesta, demanded total virginity or total surrender. In order to keep the sacred fire burning, the women serving her temple were responsible for initiating young men and kings on the path of sexuality-they sang erotic hymns, entered trance-like states and gave their ecstasy to the universe in a kind of communion with the divinity. (p.204)

저자는 또 주인공 마리아의 삶을 통해 인생에서 가지는 꿈과 여러가지 책에 대한 이야기를 들려주고 있다.

꿈을 어떻게 이루어질까?

Dream don’t come cheap (p.46)

책을 읽다 보면, 소녀가 읽은 책이 바로 저자의 쓴 책 “Alchemist”라는 것을 알 수 있다.

In Brazil she had read a book about a shepherd who, in searching for his treasure, encounters various difficulties, and these difficulties help him to get what he wants; she was in exactly the same position (p.45)

또 다른 책은 어린왕자(Little Prince)인 듯 하다.

To me, it looks more like a hat (p.50)

주인공 마리아는 시간이 나면 공공도서관에서 다양한 종류의 책을 빌려 읽고 있다. 책을 그녀에게 어려운 삶의 시기에 등대의 역할을 한다.

She went to the library to return the manual on farm management. She hadn’t understood a word of it, but, at times when she felt she had lost control of herself and of her destiny, the book had served as a reminder of her objective in life. It had been a silent companion, with its plain yellow cover, its series of graphs, but, above all, it had been a lighthouse in the dark nights of recent weeks.(p.218)

후기(Afterword)에서 저자는 이 책의 이야기가 저자가 만난 실제 인물인 한 여성의 삶에 대한 이야기라고 밝히고 있어 더욱 놀랍다.
